Some of those England penalties were awful. Too much showing off and silly tactics. You could see some were going to be misses before they even kicked the ball

I don't question his plan on this game at all. He knew what his players are capable of and it's really shown throughout this tournament.

Southgate doesn’t strike me as the kind of person to force someone to take a penalty if they weren’t prepared.

I used to watch Gareths old team Crystal Palace when he was playing. He volunteered to take his notorious penalty too for England even though he, IIRC wasnt the go to Palace pen taker. It shouldn't be up to the players to volunteer. Why didnt Grealiah do it? But anyway, I thought they would be hammered by Italy but they werent.

So I don’t understand why he brought on Rashford and Sancho for penalties only (so mentally “it’s all on this, this is what I am for”) and the youngest Saka last. Obviously something I don’t know, maybe playing the long game for us to win World Cup, they’ve already done really big pressure in 2021!? I know that’s ridiculous though.

Saka played really well during the rest of the tournament though, and at times during this game. That will hopefully have bought him a lot of credit with fans and the media to lessen any backlash against him?

In contrast, Sancho is also young (although older at 21) and inexperienced, only came on for 2mins and hasn't played that much during the tournament. If he was last, he may well have got a bigger backlash. My step DC was at school with Sancho, he was a great kid.

My point is, I don't think that putting Saka last was as bad tactically by Southgate as some people think.

Kane had to go first as the captain. It would have been wrong to put Sancho or Rashford last when they'd only just got on and hadn't had a chance to play - they could have got slated.
