anyone else dreading the influx of newbies at the gym

i love them COMING -just hate the effects on classes.

Last year I reckon most of them give up by half term or March - what do you think?>

I have been hoping to get back to the gym asap, after a bad spring with asthma, and respiratory infections, back in April. Not managed to get myself well enough, and it gets harder and harder every month.

Not least because I know what the fit and happy gang at the gym think about us chubby folk coming into pinch their space, puff and pant.

They always start with good intentions and then they drift away again. It takes hard work and self motivation to keep coming back (I only started going about 6 years ago in my mid 30s)

Only ever in terms of the sheer numbers all at once, pool, gym, classes and changing areas are all stuffed to the rafters in January.

I think if I'd joined at New year I'd have left pretty much straight away as it is an unpleasant atmosphere for everyone.

I alway book but even so there is a hoo ha with who has an hasnt. I am tbh surprised that the cliche of joining a gym still resonates - like buying an exercise bike to hang washing on, I suppose I did tell H

So - by March, back to normal?

I am always keen to smile and say hi to new people as I remember what it was like, but there are so many in Jan.

No. When I see people at the gym who are clearly newbies or overweight I actually think "good on you"
OP if the number of people in the gym bothers you why not try another form of exercise such as running or cycling outside?

oh i love the class I go to. Its just pretty over full sometimes.
plus i have a new Dx of flippen arthritis in my back. IKR - well hacked off

If it is any consolation, the amount of newbies that you cant wait to see the back off, in March, will most likely have taken out a monthly plan, that they will keep paying into for long after they have departed, in the hope they may come back.

This keeps your fees down, and you probably have nicer facilities thanks to the "supporting members" who pay for a space, and not show.

If it is so full, maybe you can talk to the management about curbing the intakes to ensure more space and access, and see if they want to increase prices for you all, to facilitate this.

I remembered to book next weeks classes at the start of this week.

TBH I'm pretty flexible about what classes I go to, as long as it's not the screechy lady who 'teaches' combat. I've been going for long enough to remember to work around the new year rush.

quint 99% of gym goers only care about themselves (in a nice way). Some of those skinny fit people were once overweight so they won't bat an eyelid. One of my teachers was several stone overweight, 2 kids.... now she teaches hard classes and has won one of those bikini muscle competitions. But you wouldn't know her past, or previous body shape, to look at her. Hope you can get back to the gym soon.

Nah, YANBU - it's irritating as hell.

I see newbies at the gym all the time - I was one years ago. Good on them.
But bloody hundreds of people turn up in January, book all the classes and i can't get into some of my regular classes.
Two weeks in the classes are still showing as fully booked but half of them don't turn up. By mid fed it's back to the dozen of us regulars.

If you are going to commit to exercise then the first of jan seems rarely to do it. It's unlikely that people reach a real point of change in their life just because of a date on the calendar. Watching them arrive in their hoards on January 1st and then vanish in February makes it just an irritation.

we have a screechy one too - mike too loud and all. Yes you have to be ruthlessly efficient in booking this time of year

I need some extras in some of mine. Went to a class on Monday (between xmas and new year) and it was just me and 1 other girl. The instructor still did the class so that was good (zumba)

this is not about weight

loads of heavy people in my classes who are amazingly fit

I'd love them all to stay. The excercise programme would probably improve if there were greater demand.

December has been very quite at the gym. If the weather is not frosty I swap the gym for cycling in January and hit the pool and sanua later or sat\sunday evening as an alternative.

By February the numbers have usually fallen, which is sad really for whatever reason
