Does your child wear vests?

Hey! I’m developing a children’s sleepwear brand and was wondering if your child wears a vest. I’m referring to children in primary school. Just a tank vest to keep warm (eg. under school uniform), not popper vests. I wore vests until I got my first bra so was wondering if vests were still a thing. Thanks!! Xx

I was wondering the same thing the other day because my kids don’t have them and I wondered when I’d use them.

Cosleepingadvice · 06/01/2026 04:02

My 4.5yo wears one under her school uniform every day in autumn / winter. We dont use one in the summer.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 06/01/2026 06:31

Mine did in primary until they started wearing crop tops, that was in y5. The vests were too babyish by then apparently.

Greybutdontwanttodye · 06/01/2026 06:50

Mine did until about 8 then there was a gap of a couple of years with nothing before crop tops were deemed “acceptable”

WinnerWinnerChickenDinnner · 06/01/2026 06:54

In cold weather yes. And so do I in cold weather.

butterdish93 · 06/01/2026 07:32

yes, in the winter, they’d be freezing without them

ItsAVomOne · 06/01/2026 07:51

Yes my 8yo does on very cold days. Won't wear a jumper for school so it's vest, polo & thick cardigan. Occasionally will wear one under a dress too. I always wear a vest under everything!

I tend to just get the packs from the supermarket but it'd be nice to have options that looked pretty if they showed like I have, eg lace trim/not very obviously "thermal".

wornoutjeans · 06/01/2026 08:02

My ds (8) does but he was telling me he’s the only boy that does

Btowngirl · 06/01/2026 08:04

4 year old DD has never worn a vest

Rocknrollstar · 06/01/2026 08:18

Don’t they just wear t-shirts?

FancyCatSlave · 06/01/2026 08:26

My Y1 DD does in winter (Nov-March roughly). Not all year round though.

They seem to be universal amongst her peers.

FancyCatSlave · 06/01/2026 08:28

Rocknrollstar · 06/01/2026 08:18

Don’t they just wear t-shirts?

A t shirt under a short sleeved polo shirt would be pretty unsightly not to mention uncomfortable.

Theunamedcat · 06/01/2026 08:33

Mine did but the primary they went to was screamingly hot so it was go to school in thick coats jumpers hats scarfs and strip to a tshirt when you get in so they didn't bother with a vest

Dulcie6 · 06/01/2026 10:37

My Daughters do (5&8)

Gowlett · 06/01/2026 10:40

Yes, my 5 year old always wears a vest (not in summer).
Thin-ish long sleeve in cold weather, would like similar vest.

Mkxxx · 06/01/2026 19:49

Thanks everyone very insightful. When I went to school in the 90s all my friends wore sleeveless vests as did I. Seems like it’s a mixed bag now

Nope - mine never wore vests after the baby popper vest phase. I swear they would have melted otherwise.

candycanetime · 06/01/2026 20:01

We took my 6 year old to a consultant in a hospital and he laughed and made a comment that vests were really unusual these days when my son had to take his tshirt off! I was surprised.

ClariceStarlingsDuffleCoat · 06/01/2026 20:19

My 11 year old DS wears a vest when it's cold.

DH claims never to have worn a vest, and I haven't worn one as underwear since I was six, following a stand-up row with Mum in the kids underwear department of M&S. After a summer spent vest-less, indeed often topless like my brother and his friends, Mum felt that I needed new vests for the impending winter. The resultant melt-down was resolved by the intervention of a sales apprentice who took Mum aside, and patiently explained that school uniform polo plus sweat-shirt/cardigan provided adequate layers in central-heated classrooms, leaving Mum grudgingly accepting the situation.

Our own (now grown up and out of our hair) DCs never had vests once they progressed beyond the poppered stage. With our parental example, they politely but firmly declined to wear them under any circumstances, despite being offered in Winter, and they often shivered valiantly in the cause.

None of our primary-school-aged DGCs wear vests, at school or elsewhere, following the example of their parents (our DCs) and ourselves.

RandomUsernameHere · 07/01/2026 18:59

Mine have never had vests, when it’s really cold they wear an extra t shirt underneath.

BooksandCats123 · 07/01/2026 19:02

Yes, so do I when it’s this cold.

Cherrybomb00 · 07/01/2026 19:07

No, they both insist they would be too hot.

Sprogonthetyne · 07/01/2026 19:40

Mine did until around 4/5. I think I just brought one batch of the ones without poppers after they potty trained, then phased them out when they outgrew them.

They sometimes wear a t-shirt under their school polo's on very cols days, but the extra layer is only needed a few time a year, so it doesn't feel worth having a separate piece of clothing for

NewShoes · 07/01/2026 20:33

Yep both of mine (6 and 2) wear vests in the winter!
