Does your child wear vests?

Hey! I’m developing a children’s sleepwear brand and was wondering if your child wears a vest. I’m referring to children in primary school. Just a tank vest to keep warm (eg. under school uniform), not popper vests. I wore vests until I got my first bra so was wondering if vests were still a thing. Thanks!! Xx

My DS wore vests well into his teens and rarely got colds. I’m convinced that extra layer was what helped him stay cold-free. Personally I’m obsessed with vests.

somanychristmaslights · 07/01/2026 20:57

DS8 hasn’t since he was little, but he never feels the cold.

NerrSnerr · 07/01/2026 21:11

Mine didn’t wear vests after the baby popper ones.

Will also say that my 8 year old has only worn his school jumper once this winter (when there was snow). He’ll be one of those men who wear shorts in January.

Cocomelon67 · 07/01/2026 21:12

No, mine don’t.

Piglet89 · 07/01/2026 21:26

Yes my son wears a fleecy lined vest in cold weather under school uniform.

Seawolves · 07/01/2026 21:32

No, he wears a lyrca orthotic suit and he'd melt if he wore a vest too.

Bitzee · 07/01/2026 21:42

DD8 has some summer strappy tops that she sometimes wears under jumpers in the winter instead of a t-shirt, not sure if that counts. DS hasn’t worn them since he potty trained. I don’t buy vests because it’s never that cold inside that they need an extra layer on top of a t-shirt/shirt and a jumper and when outside they have a warm coat. I don’t really get what the point of them is.

MumNotBro · 07/01/2026 21:46

I dutifully bought them when mine were little and they insisted they were “boiling” and refused to wear them. It’s a battle to get them to wear a jumper / coat in sub-zero temperatures!

Eileen101 · 07/01/2026 21:48

Yes. 8 and 6. Plain white for under school polos, nicer print ones for weekends/holidays.

RollOnSunshine · 07/01/2026 21:57

No. None of mine are Rab C Nesbit.

CRG01 · 07/01/2026 22:09

My DS4 wears a vest over winter time.

momahoho1 · 07/01/2026 22:13

No mine didn’t and I can’t recall any other kids wearing them either

YIKESY · 07/01/2026 22:15

Thermal vest in winter, cotton vest in autumn/spring.

She's funny about sleeves, so vests are a good way to keep warm.

januarybikethief · 07/01/2026 22:16

My DD did in the winter, every day at school (and also under her non-school clothes at the weekend) up until she was about 9 (she’s 12 now).

I couldn’t find good ones in the main UK shops that weren’t synthetic or uncomfortable, so I used to buy multipacks of soft organic cotton short-sleeved vests from Vertbaudet (French brand), with multipacks of the matching knickers. They were fantastic quality cotton, always stayed really soft and washed really well. They would last for two years in each size and were one of my really good buys! Indispensable under school uniform.

YIKESY · 07/01/2026 22:18

(I spent loads on organic merino ones but she still says they're itchy, so we're back to the Next synthetic thermals sadly)

fashionqueen0123 · 07/01/2026 22:20

Yes when it’s cold and I know their friends do too.
What I would say though is… you can buy them for so cheap I’m not sure it would ever be worth designing any for that purpose especially as they’re worn mainly under clothing.
But what I do love and find hard to find is vests for sleeping in in the summer with matching shorts. Mothercare used to do lovely sets with sleeveless or strap vests. My kids get too hot in t-shirt tops. Now I’ve found them in vertbaudet but not many other places

januarybikethief · 07/01/2026 22:22

These ones:

https://www.vertbaudet.co.uk/pack-of-4-girls-t-shirts-white.htm?ProductId=700220088&FiltreCouleur=6349&qId=4b34be346987c3858d9590a788a810f7

They say t-shirts but the soft cotton and the shape make them more like a vest - they also have a pointelle edging and a little bow at the front, like old-fashioned underwear. So cute! I miss the days when DD had her vests! I used to buy two packs so she always had a soft 100% cotton under-layer in the colder weather.

I really really recommend them for anyone looking for vests. Size up, as French sizes are always “up to” the stated age, so they are sized very small (eg if your kid is 6, buy age 8)

They also do long-sleeved and strappy options too.

LavenderBlue19 · 07/01/2026 22:24

No, it hadn't even occurred to me to be honest. I never see them in shops either?

DS runs hot, he often refuses to wear a coat even in deepest winter.

Snugglemonkey · 07/01/2026 22:27

We live in Scotland and it is cold! Dc2 is 3 and wears a vest every day then a top/dress and then cardi/jumper. Dc1 used to really feel the cold and wore thermal longsleeved vest and longjohns under school uniform every winter until this year. Now it is cooler to freeze apparently.

staybyyou · 07/01/2026 22:43

Only when it’s really really cold (frost/snow), otherwise not. They run warm anyway, and their school is like an oven.

Marble10 · 07/01/2026 23:23

My DS loves a vest so much to the point he thinks it feels weird just a t shirt- he was a preemie baby and I’ve always been worried about him being cold so carried on from the baby stage! (Except in summer obvs)

Mkxxx · 12/01/2026 11:31

Thank you everyone for your input. It so interesting to see that vests aren’t as common as I thought! I remember wearing them especially at school especially since my school classrooms were always freezing 😆

Really? They are always in the shops I use-with the underwear. DD likes hers to match her pants!

RessicaJabbit · 12/01/2026 14:29
