Another newbie question - skipping breakfast

pelagra · 06/07/2023 17:52

I went to a coffee morning, where I knew I'd eat cake, so I skipped breakfast. But I would have had a syn-free breakfast anyway, so there was no benefit under the rules. Logic says that I saved some calories though, so how do I count this?

Count the cake syns as breakfast?

idontcarewhatanyonesaysithinkyourealright · 07/07/2023 13:44

Breakfast is the first thing you eat after sleeping, you break your fast.

The cake was breakfast.

pelagra · 07/07/2023 13:53

Yes, the cake and its sins were breakfast, but I would normally have had some fruit and fat free Greek yoghurt before that. I skipped them, but since both are free, Slimming world says there is no benefit.
But there would have been calories in the fruit and yoghurt, yet there is no way to offset them against the cake. The rules say I might as well have eaten both.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 07/07/2023 17:41

You could eat both within the rules, but you have to count the syns for the cake. That's how it works...you can have things like cake on top of your normal healthy food, but only in moderation and counting the syns is what forces moderation.

FFS when will sheeple wake up to the fact that SW is a cult.

GinBlossom94 · 07/07/2023 17:53

SW is shit, also please look at all the recent news regarding aspartame - a key ingredient in all your "low syn" chemicals they are encouraging you to eat. Honestly it's just not healthy at all

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/07/2023 17:56

You should've just had fruit and yoghurt and synned your cake.

SW works if you follow the rules. It's basically a low fat ,low sugar diet with lots of fruit, veg and salad not a cult🙄

modgepodge · 07/07/2023 17:59

If you’d had the fruit and yogurt first, you might have eaten less cake, and at the very least would have felt more full for longer, so maybe have eaten less for lunch or not had another snack before lunch. If I only ate a piece of cake all morning I’d be starving by lunch whereas the fruit and yogurt as well would fill me up a bit more.

This is very true.

I can't think of any scenario where I would eat less cake, unless I'd already eaten a lot of cake.
Agree with PP, SW is a cult and does not work long term.

Grumpigal · 07/07/2023 18:08

Skipping breakfast and therefore doing a mini fast is pretty good for you - fasting has lots of benefits.

Not sure it’s beneficial to follow it with cake but hey ho. Yes you did save calories technically so just log the cake as syns forget about the rest.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 07/07/2023 18:10

SW is not a cult. You can leave and join as you wish. You don't have to eat any foods - aspartame or otherwise. When you reach target you are not charged.

There are people in my group who have lost stones in weight and kept it off for many years.

The basis of the diet is healthy fresh fruit and veg.....you add to that what you choose and it can be as healthy as you like.

It's not going to work long term if you eat a load of cake is it.

A slice of cake isn't a 'load' of cake and it's fine to eat cake as part of a balanced diet as an occasional treat.

badluckorbadvibes · 07/07/2023 18:44

This is why SW is bullshit.

If you are thinking in calories you should just count them and ditch the batshit nonsense diet.

I expect it is possible to do SW in a chemical based approach. I cook from scratch two or tree times a day, using real ingredients. SW appealed to me because the recipes they suggest look like food I'd eat anyway - mainly vegetarian, lots of veg and pulses, but less butter and sugar.
I'm only two weeks in, but no-one has suggested that I use anything but natural ingredients.

"can't think of any scenario where I would eat less cake, unless I'd already eaten a lot of cake."

Ok, not a 'load' but a 'lot'.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 07/07/2023 20:50

@pelagra I feel the same as you. I don't eat processed food and like to eat home cooked wholesome food. I'm six months in and three stone down and feeling much healthier and more active. I hope it all goes well for you and you achieve your aims.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I'm SO glad it's not just me who does that 😀

Totally agree the odd piece of cake is a treat nobody wants to miss out on.

Me too, 3 stone down since end of November. I cook pretty much what I did before but sunning things has been an eye opener!

BunnyBettChetwynd · 07/07/2023 21:11

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I bet you feel amazing! Well done you.

Not sure about amazing, people tell me I look different and I've needed a new wardrobe but I can't see it in the mirror yet, my brain needs to catch up!

pelagra · 08/07/2023 09:27

Three stone is also what I need to lose, so you are both inspiring me @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor @BunnyBettChetwynd
Do you have any favourite recipes?

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/07/2023 10:04

Salmon and stir-fry noodles
Chicken thigh and veg tray bake
Bolognese
Gammon in the slow cooker or roasted
BBQ - grilling lots of chicken thighs at the moment!
Fish and new potatoes and veg or salad
Chicken casserole
Liver and bacon -not everyone's favourite 😂
Roast dinners
Soups

There are tons of recipes on the SW app which is really helpful but tbh I cook pretty much what I did before so that's been easy. It's been dealing just how highly synned processed food is that's been the shocker!

I'm fully expecting to have to do this for life though as I need to do it for health reasons so I'm seeing it as a life long healthy eating plan which makes it easier.
