Another newbie question - skipping breakfast

pelagra · 06/07/2023 17:52

I went to a coffee morning, where I knew I'd eat cake, so I skipped breakfast. But I would have had a syn-free breakfast anyway, so there was no benefit under the rules. Logic says that I saved some calories though, so how do I count this?

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/07/2023 10:13

I would always have breakfast before going for coffee and cake for two reasons,I'm always hungry when I wake up and also because having something sweet first thing would be triggering and likely to set the tone of day 🙄😂 SW is about recognising your triggers and working through them so that way I just see cake for exactly what it is- an occasional treat not a meal replacement.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 08/07/2023 10:39

My favourite SW recipe is Lamb and Aubergine curry from the SW Fast Feasts book I got free when I signed up. It's really easy to cook and everyone loves it. I serve it when guests come round and nobody ever guesses they're eating slimming food.

Like you @pelagra I joined thinking I had three stone to lose and it sounded like a mountain to climb. I thought I'd only feel like I'd achieved something when the whole three stone was gone, but I can honestly say I felt so proud of myself and much better from week 1 as the pounds dropped off. I've had to buy a whole new load of clothes as my old ones got too big for me.......I really enjoyed that!! I reckon it's a lifelong thing too, but I so enjoy the weekly session and have made some lovely friends in group so I'm going to keep going to make sure I stay at target.

I have a family member who lost stones and has kept it off for 2 years, weighs in every 8 weeks to keep on track and it's life long for her. Like any diet,if she stops and goes back to how she ate she'll gain weight.

I haven't ventured to group yet, I have done it all on line so far. I'm not sure I want to get caught up on the competitive side of it,I'm just happy plodding along being pleased with loss and not too disappointed if I don't. I will have to though if /when I get to target. I left a couple of FB SW sites as the competitivenes was awful. I still belong to the SW Aldi one though as that's useful.

Lamb and aubergine curry sounds amazing!

BunnyBettChetwynd · 08/07/2023 11:21

I think I must have struck really lucky with my group @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor because there's no competition at all there, just a helluva lot of encouragement and support. People are so supportive if you've had a bad week like we all do now and again. It's finding what works for you isn't it and I agree, I couldn't bear any competition. I started for personal health reasons and that, not competition has kept me motivated.

I might investigate a local group,we do actually have a few so if it isn't for me I can try another. The thought of weighing in public brings me out in a cold sweat!!!

BunnyBettChetwynd · 08/07/2023 12:08

You don't weigh in public so please don't sweat it😀 At my group one person weighs you and writes the result down very privately in your book. There might be squeals if you've done very well, but it's utterly private.

Also, in class, the group leader only ever praises people. There's no fat shaming (quite the opposite) and nobody ever knows your weight, only that you've lost half a pound or whatever. I'm quite a shy, private person and I don't find it intimidating at all, quite the opposite.

JMSA · 08/07/2023 12:53

I'm new to this too. I'm starting to browse this board prior to joining SW properly after my holiday next week.
A question though, and I don't mean to be rude. But why are people who obviously hate SW even on this board? It seems odd to me, but perhaps I'm missing something.

First up it juts appears in 'active' and I don't necessarily read the board it's on, juts the title.

Secondly, it's not about hating SW so much as trying to warn others that it really is just shite. OP is new to SW and is already wondering how to 'offset' a piece of cake against a 'free' breakfast. OP knows this is about calories already but even at the start of her journey she is looking to make the food make sense by SW standard, which of course it never will. It's literally fine to have w piece of cake instead of a breakfast of a similar amount of calories occasionally. SW would have you tie yourself in knots to make it make sense.

It's not about hate, just basic calories and common sense.

I am almost certain the vast majority of people who do post in weight loss threads negatively about SW have been there themselves and experienced it first hand.

badluckorbadvibes · 08/07/2023 13:13

Sorry that was reply to @JMSA

Slimming World works because it encourages you to eat more healthily and fill up on things that are nutritious but low fat and low sugar.

You can do SW and never have to know the calorie content of anything.

That said a 200g slice of Victoria sponge is 594 calories.
200g of yoghurt and strawberries is about 150 calories. It works because you just couldn't eat enough strawberries and yoghurt to use up as many calories.

You don't have to tie yourself in knots to make it make sense. You can just follow it and it works...you lose weight.

I've been there myself and experienced it first hand and through my fellow group mates and I don't know what makes people describe it as shite, especially as nobody is specific about why they find it so shite.

150 calories of strawberries and yogurt is a shite breakfast for anyone though.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 08/07/2023 15:24

@badluckorbadvibes So is a piece of Victoria Sponge. Slimming World doesn't suggest you have either.

I've lost three stone on SW since Christmas. My typical breakfast is two slices of lean bacon, grilled tomatoes, grilled mushrooms and a slice of wholemeal toast followed by a mix of fruit e.g. strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and low fat natural yoghurt. It's a better breakfast than I was eating before.

badluckorbadvibes · 08/07/2023 15:25

Indeed. Yet OP was asking how to 'offset' the calories from the free breakfast against her cake.

It's batshit.

Also you could have chosen this before and still lost weight. It doesn't do magic because SW call it 'free'

SW isn't bat shit, the OP hasn't got her head round it yet as she's new. It takes a while to settle in to.

She doesn't tend to get her head round it, she already knows each breakfast contains calories

BunnyBettChetwynd · 08/07/2023 15:28

The OP was asking for help as she's a newbie to Slimming World. No disrespect to her at all as she's learning, but she just didn't understand how it works. I didn't at first but there's lots of help via the app, the books, the group leader and other group members. Also tons of help on here from people who have experience.

The OP's lack of experience and understanding isn't her fault or SW's.

I'm sorry OP, I was trying to answer a poster who asked about why I posted. I am not laying any blame or having a go at you.

I am going to step back now because I really wasn't looking for an argument here.

Yes, I could have done this before....but I didn't.

I was obese before SW for many years. I'm not a stupid person nor an unmotivated one. I just couldn't get my confidence or act together on my own. I tried many things and failed.

I just needed the structure and a plan and SW gave me that. I don't think SW is magic - it doesn't profess to be magic - but it is a framework around which to base a healthy eating programme. SW has worked for me and I'm under no illusion it did it by waving a magic wand.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/07/2023 18:00

Completely agree with that ^^ Lots of people need a plan or a frame, that's why apps like Noom and the NHS calorie counting one and also the love of Fitbit watches etc are so popular.

I could easily have had the cooked breakfast described above BUT I would've used too much oil, probably had toast with butter too and left the fat on the bacon.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 08/07/2023 18:33

You've perfectly described my old style breakfast @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor ...but I would have added sausages, black pudding and a latte.

No idea how I ever got fat 😀
