Why is class so boring?

I've just joined SW. I was feeling really motivated. Sat through one class and left wanting to eat the entire contents of my biscuit tin in despair.

It's so long and boring! I had forgotten the drawn out faffage of going round everyone and discussing their gain/losses. Mostly gains! How is that motivating? It's not interesting in the slightest especially 10 minutes spent on one person etc.

Why do they do this? Why not 'group has lost xx lbs' then an quick chat to a couple of folk then move on? I don't want to face that every week! It's supposed to motivate but I'm not sure I can do that every week!

I can't be the only one who thinks this?

You're in the wrong group I am afraid.

I loved my SW group. It was lively, friendly and motivating. We never spent more than a minute or two on various people that had done exceedingly well. The rest was just sharing tips, tricks and recipes. I loved it.

feral · 20/07/2017 23:37

Do you think I should stick it out and see if it gets better? I chose group over online as I wanted the support.

The class leader is on holiday next week so if the stand in's class is the same does then I'm doomed?

I don't mind some 'how did people do' just not for so long! Especially when there was nothing to learn from apart from what not to do!

Same Mcbounty. Although sadly I think the good ones are few and far between

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/07/2017 00:00

I've only stayed at mine once so far (because I usually have to get to work) and, yes, boring. 45 mins hanging around while everyon gets weighed, then the leader handing out awards and talking to those people for what seems like ages each, a few tips thrown in and that's about it. The leader is nice and chatty and doesn't put anyone on the spot, but I had been hoping the group would be smaller so everyone could join in the conversation, rather than just listening to the leader talk to a few people.

BenedictCumberbeyatch · 21/07/2017 00:05

This is what puts me off, my local group is bloody enourmous and it takes a good hour and a half to get round everyone! I'm bored to the point of tears by the end of it.
I'm rejoining Monday, after that I'm strictly pay to weigh then fucking off home. Bollocks to that nonsense!

feral · 21/07/2017 00:08

I've already sussed that 5.30 means I can turn up at 6.05 to be weighed and miss nothing!

Perhaps look at others groups in your local area? I know that in my area, there's 4 or 5 different SW groups.

NeverEnoughSleep1 · 21/07/2017 01:09

I joined months and months ago and went to a group and it was packed with people but I couldn't understand what the fuss was about nor why anyone would want to st for over an hour hearing other people's gains/losses so eventually I quit

Joined up early 3 weeks ago to a different group and it's so different, everyone chats but no pressure to get involved, share tips and new finds or good recipes they've tried and it just blends really well

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/07/2017 06:43

All the groups in my town are run by the same leader and I'd have a 20 mile round trip to get to any others so I'm sticking with it.

tankerdale · 21/07/2017 06:56

One (two actually) I went to was horribly tedious too.
Worst bit was the leader would look at her iPad and get the highest loser etc talk to them first, and other big losses/milestones, then she'd go round one by one, including those people again and basically repeat the same comments/questions!
Also after asking someone a question she wouldn't look at them for the answer she'd be looking down at her iPad and doing stuff on that whilst talking!
Definitely enough to drive you to the choc/wine!!

talulahbeige · 22/07/2017 07:00

Definitely try another group with a different leader.
My leader is ace, she speaks to everyone but it's done in a great way, no going round one by one, she just draws everyone into the group discussion.
When she's on holiday the stand in she uses is terrible, no way would I go to one of her groups regularly.
Try a few, it's worth it

everythingstaken123 · 22/07/2017 13:57

My class is literally the most demotivating thing you could ever sit through. Like others, she goes round and talks to every single person. And contradicts herself the whole way round (1-2 pounds is a healthy weight loss! Would you like to set a goal? Well you need to set it high cos there's no point losing just a pound. Are you REALLY happy with just losing a pound?) About once every 5 weeks I sit through one again and hope it may have changed but no such luck. One week our leader was away and we had a different one. Totally different. Much more interesting. I would like to go to group and find out interesting things like have you tried this delicious low syn treat? Anyone know how to go on holiday and not put on too much weight etc. I only go to group because I like feeling like i'm not alone even if the only people i talk to are in the queue!

crazycatgal · 22/07/2017 14:02

Totally agree, you can be sat there for an hour as the group leader goes to each and every person and asks the same questions. It's boring.

Groovee · 22/07/2017 16:00

Be careful about turning up at 6.05pm when the class is quiet over the summer holidays. As it's been dead at ours the consultant has closed weigh in at 5.55pm and started class. Has meant a few people have to sit through class to get weighed at the end.

ibuiltahomeforyou · 23/07/2017 09:20

My class is boring and my leader isn't good at keeping the conversation to one group so there are people just nattering to one another.

I force myself to go to bore myself into losing weight because hearing 30-odd variations about how it's Janice's sister's ruby wedding this weekend so she'll definitely have a gain is so mind-numbing it is weirdly inspiring!

Sloegin2 · 02/08/2017 23:51

Boring here too.
Tonight even the newbies were whispering to me asking when would it ever end so they could leave!

Groovee · 03/08/2017 11:07

We actually have had some great classes recently. We've had to get our books out and gone over things we may have missed or forgotten about. It's got ideas coming out and some great tips.

amusedbush · 06/08/2017 17:14

I've been to every class in my area and beyond (Blush) and they are all exactly the same. Hands out awards, goes round every single person in the room hearing what they've been up to over the week and then the raffle is drawn. It's so, so boring but I grudge paying £5 to get weighed and go 😩

ibuiltahomeforyou · 06/08/2017 18:51

WeightWatchers has much better content but the diet isn't as sustainable imho.

I WISH it'd stop going around the room discussing everyone's losses, it's deeply boring.

Plus the raffle is always shit Wink

PretendingToBeAMuggle · 06/08/2017 21:20

Haha I joined on Friday and had to joim be weighed then Dash off. The leader lectured me that in future I MUST stay to class. She immediately got my back up. I appreciate those that attend class are statistically speaking slightly more likely to lose more weight but I really didn't like her demeanour so she's shot herself In the foot as I'll be attending another class to get weighed now. Does that kind of authoritarian teacher stance actually work with anyone. And of it does is it any way to speak to vulnerable people feeling self conscious about their weight?

amusedbush · 06/08/2017 21:42

I once had a leader who refused to listen to 'excuses' as to why someone might not have lost weight. Never mind the fact that periods, constipation, water retention - jeez, even a heavy meal! - can affect the scales one week. If someone swore blind they had stuck to plan and still maintained, she would publicly say 'the fact is, it comes down to too many syns. You'll know where you've gone wrong even if you don't want to admit it'! Shock

Another woman once complained that the weight was getting harder to shift as she got closer to target and the same leader said, 'you realise that's a lot a shite? You must be doing something wrong!'

She's the regional manager and wildly popular. I have no idea why! Confused

carrotcakecupcake · 06/08/2017 21:48

Definitely look for other groups. The first time I joined SW I had a fab group; small and the members were all of a similar he which I think helped discussion. I moved and joined a new group which is dire. The "discussion" is endless and full of in jokes of people who have been going for years and years. Nothing motivating , and the leader shows no interest in new members or those that aren't her friends.

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 06/08/2017 21:54

There aren't any other groups here though. Several sessions in our town but all the same leader. Next nearest is 20 mins plus drive away, I really don't want to do that.

chocolatespiders · 06/08/2017 21:57

Do they still do the collection of food for the best slimmer?

Groovee · 06/08/2017 22:37

Yes they still do the SOW basket.
