Why is class so boring?

I've just joined SW. I was feeling really motivated. Sat through one class and left wanting to eat the entire contents of my biscuit tin in despair.

It's so long and boring! I had forgotten the drawn out faffage of going round everyone and discussing their gain/losses. Mostly gains! How is that motivating? It's not interesting in the slightest especially 10 minutes spent on one person etc.

Why do they do this? Why not 'group has lost xx lbs' then an quick chat to a couple of folk then move on? I don't want to face that every week! It's supposed to motivate but I'm not sure I can do that every week!

I can't be the only one who thinks this?

My consultant is really good. She does a quick "hands-up" for who has lost/gained/maintained, asks if anyone has any specific problems they want to discuss and then moves on to whatever topic we're discussing that week.

However - every now and then she is "observed" by someone from SW (area manager possibly?) and then we go round the whole group one at a time, and it is boring as hell. She's told us that she was told off for doing it the more interesting way, so now she plays the game when she's being watched!

JennyOnAPlate · 08/08/2017 17:00

My local one is incredibly tedious. Its a really large group and the consultant goes round each person. The whole thing ends up taking two hours!

monkeytoad35 · 08/08/2017 17:22

Do many people actually stay to the group bit? I've been once and not staying again. I went the first time and that was enough to put me off. I'll turn up each week to get weighed then I'll be going home Smile

Starlight2345 · 08/08/2017 17:33

I left SW in Easter..I used to stay however. I reached the point I was completely frustated. The same people had the same problems... The next week same problem.. Yes image therapy doesn't seem to work IMO

I also started to feel SW seems to be about marketing products like Mullers, Iceland meals..

Redpony1 · 10/08/2017 15:40

i wish they did the 'anyone want to share their progress this week?' rather than robotically going around everyone

strawberrykiss36 · 10/08/2017 21:30

I'm planning on joining my local one tomorrow, I've never been before or been on slimming world before. Is there any other point to turning up to get weighed if you don't stay afterwards - £5 seems like a lot each week just to get weighed, or are there other benefits/extras?

Groovee · 10/08/2017 22:41

@strawberrykiss36 image therapy starts once everyone has been weighed. Although we still go round doing everyone's losses, we have been doing lots of tips and people learning new things.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 11/08/2017 09:42

I used to be a member of a large group. The leader was really annoyed if anyone had the cheek to be weighed at the beginning and then just leave - made us feel like naughty school children. She did the whole going round to each and every person in the group (about 70 people) to discuss their week. It was mind numbingly boring. Glad I went as the diet worked for me at the time.

I piled it back on again (and then some) so am now a member online. It's slower progress but I'm glad I don't have to sit through image therapy!

Gorgosparta · 12/08/2017 10:45

Some groups arent great. Some are not.

Some are down right depressive.

While i think groups are dependant on the members. I also think that the consultant and how they handle it matters

TheGoodWife16 · 12/08/2017 15:18

As someone who doesn't cope well with being forced to speak up in front of others, particularly about a sensitive subject such as weight loss, this has totally put me off joining a local group next week!

I don't have masses to lose (2 stone), but I had hoped the support of a leader may help me understand slimming world as I've never done it before.

I think I'll look online instead!

Trills · 12/08/2017 15:20

I joined a month ago.

Your description is technically accurate (going round saying what people have lost or gained, having a very small chat with each of them), but somehow makes it sound so much worse than my experience has been.

Groovee · 12/08/2017 17:30

@TheGoodWife16 you can speak in confidence with your consultant and they often will just give you a mention if you are shy. We have 2 members who don't like things being mentioned.

Gorgosparta · 12/08/2017 18:46

The consultant and group are worthwhile imo. Even if its to explain everything and give tips and ideas. And will skip over you if you want them too.

TheGoodWife16 · 12/08/2017 20:03

Thanks groovee - maybe I'll be brave and go along. She did say I could speak to her beforehand if I get there early. Being partially deaf, I really hate being singled out in case I mishear (it has happened, it's funny for everyone else and embarrassing for me!).

busyboysmum · 12/08/2017 20:11

I can't go to SW for this very reason. All the different meetings I've tried have been the same. Soul destroying mind numbing. I have better things to do with my time (such as mumsnet)

WW meetings are much better IMHO.

iamyourequal · 12/08/2017 21:55

It's boring because nobody wants to sit for over an hour to learn what 20 strangers have eaten all week and then here rubbish like 'you haven't lost weight because you didn't eat your syns' .for me the misery was compounded by hearing horrendous recipe suggestions involving making puddings with artificial sugar and macaroni cheese with cottage cheese. (Crimes against food). I've just started following the plan myself at home again and I'm not losing weight at any great rate, but I definitely feel the benefit of eating a low fat diet with lots of fresh fruit and veg and homecooked meals.

BillieRuffian · 14/08/2017 21:33

The only way I could get through group was I played SW bingo.

I wrote in the back of my book various sayings that pop up in group and I would mark them off.

Some of my favourites after putting on weight were -
your not eating your syns - yes she was I saw her with a cream bun and a latte in the local cafe or
it must be because I am doing Body Magic and muscle weighs more than fat, I know guys who have been training years to put on muscle, yet these girls can do it in a fortnight, or
it's water retention whilst your muscles repair - not the bottles of prosecco you guzzled Sat night on your mates Hen party or

Eat more speed food - I've seen a Labrador eat slower than her, she could suck the topping off a pizza before you've put it on the table. Shock Confused

This post is not intended to insult - this is just some of the saying I've heard and the behaviours during my time at SW.

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 14/08/2017 21:57

Oh god you've just reminded me how boring they are. Im planning on going back in a couple of weeks once school starts again.

Ive found that if I stick to group I do better, then I get bored of group so weigh and fuck off. Then I stop going altogether and try to follow the plan, but slowly but surely start eating the crap again and put weight on.

Last time I lost just over 1.5 stone, but I have gained 8-9lbs of that.

I was planning on going again to see if I can't lose another 1-1.5 stone before Christmas.

I suppose if staying at group helps me more then for an hour I can be bored stupid. Perhaps I should do what I used to do at school. Stick an earphone in and listen to music slyly

BTW Im not going to do that. Just grin and bear it I suppose.

drigon · 20/08/2017 18:32

Yes, this must be the accepted format at group. I've been to 3 different groups over 12 years and all were large and varying degrees of tedious! Going round everyone in a circle is not terribly helpful. I'm doing it myself now at home as I know the plan backwards and am mainly sticking to old-plan Red days as it works far better than E.E.

Mittens92 · 20/08/2017 18:36

That's why I changed back to doing it online. I started SW online at first and lost 1 and a half stone before I decided to join a group instead. The consultant was lovely but the class was very boring indeed! Going around, telling people what their gains and losses are, how their week went and what did they do different etc. I do appreciate it as we all have a rough week now and again but for me, I just found it a bit too personal. I couldn't be bothered explaining why and how I gained or lost weight cos the simple fact: I followed the SW plan 100.%. I have gone back to doing online now (also cos I have a hectic schedule when I go back to uni) and I weigh myself every Monday first thing in the morning like before xx

BakedBeans47 · 22/08/2017 21:13

I hate the classes and I have been to loads and they all follow the same format. So boring. I particularly hate the "and how much do you want to aim for next week?" bit

I have just signed up for the nth time but don't think I will stay to group every week.

PuffinNose · 23/08/2017 23:51

Oh god yeah and then there's always that woman who wants to go into great detail every week.
I don't tend to stay to group unless I'm with a friend. I have a nice group and supportive consultant but I get bored and when I see that everyone is there my heart sinks!
My contribution tends to be "yes, I had a good week. Why? I did a meal plan. This week I just want a loss" or "No I wasn't surprised I gained. I ate 6 packets of biscuits. What will I do to get back on track this week? I will meal plan".

Viviennemary · 23/08/2017 23:54

The meetings are dreadful. I want to lose weight but I promised myself never to subject myself to a SW class again. It's torture.

MeMeMeMe123 · 24/08/2017 00:05

Agree... fecking muller yoghurts & mug shots & scan bran ferrero rocher...
Boke boke.

Most leaders I've met cannot manage a room, are too twee and a bit too cliquey. 'Here's your wee certificate" "What wee loss do you want for next week then?"

Gahhhhh!!!

Groovee · 24/08/2017 07:32

Why does the target for next week not allow half a pound. It's regularly in our class that some one is half a pound away from an award! But nooooo you have to do a pound or more 🙄
