I can confirm that Austria is looking promising snow wise. This is from the window of our chalet and given it was all brown with man made pistes snaking down last week I think we've done well to book this week! I'm currently deciding whether to grab a cheeky hour this afternoon or to go straight to apres today. I suspect apres will win.

Also good in Les Gets! Though no cross country open, officially. May go to Morzine in the morning and unofficially investigate. I could easily ski on everyone's back yards, after all.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 08/01/2017 18:39

More confirmation from Austria.
DS returned today from Solden - apparently snow was 'a foot deep' outside the hotel when they left for the coach to Munich, trip took 5 hours instead of 3 because of the snow....
Good skiing to be had this week!

TrickyD · 08/01/2017 22:33

Thank you Drspouse. I have always regarded cross-country skiing as too much like hard work, compared with going up the mountain on a lift and descending with the help of gravity, rather than slogging along on the flat, but maybe it would be worth having a go at the sort where the grooves are nicely prepared and the gradients shallow.

Meanwhile DH reports an excellent first day at Arc2000, the run to the carpark is closed but higher up the skiing is good.

Small problem with Crystal messing up the pre-booked lift passes. DGS who is 23 was issued with a child's pass, despite my paying for an adult one. He only realised when he was stopped at the first lift. However the staff were very good, gave him a chitty to show at other lifts and told him to get onto the rep. ASAP. Sunday is the Rep's day off, so hope they managed to get it sorted somehow.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/01/2017 20:31

drspouse did you go to Morzine? How was it? We're heading out to Ardent on Saturday and I'm finally allowing myself to start getting excited!

The forecast for this week looks promising too.

drspouse · 10/01/2017 08:20

I did, no trails open, and most are at the top of gondolas so I can't even go up to have a look. Eventually I found my way to a valley trail and with a full day pack/food I'd be happy to walk down for 15 mins to check but I had very little.
Going on a hike this morning with DH and then it's supposed to snow. If nothing's open later in the week I shall alternately sulk, go out downhill with DH, and go on organised snowshoe walks.

I've been trying to post pictures but no luck. Anyway I got two mornings of x-country, even saw some other skiers. LOADS of snow mid-end week especially last night and today. We took DS to a magic carpet today and he did a lovely fast run down followed by a fairly controlled snowplough.
So a good week for all. Probably won't come to Les Gets again (higher resort might be better with not brilliant conditions), I suspect that although on paper the cross country facilities are similar in France to Austria, the culture isn't as set up (no retirees walking their dogs on skis here!). I'll keep pushing DH for Norway!

User543212345 · 15/01/2017 10:21

What a lovely week! It's chucked or down in Austria for the last two days so we've had some glorious powder skiing. The first half of the week was sunny and glorious so we've been spoiled! Gutted to be going home - we were so tempted to stay another week as the conditions are now lovely, but really I'm not fit enough to manage another week on the slopes (and another week of chalet food and wine will do serious damage to wardrobe choices).

Is it bad to look at booking our next trip before we leave the airport?Grin

Perfectly sensible!

montezumasrevenge · 15/01/2017 17:32

Hello, been on here under other guises over the years. Off to livigno at the weekend
Anyone been? Dh has been a few times and likes it, apparently the skiing is "flattering" which is much needed for me Grin Just wondered if anyone had any tips etc?

Also, am currently in nikwax hell, going through all the coats, sallies etc. It's relentless, is there an easier way of doing this? Angry Am washing with the special wash, washing again with the special waterproofing shite, then spraying with the other waterproofing shite, then air drying. Sad
Then I've got all the wollies to do on the ridiculous long woolly cycle, then dry them flat, whatever the hell that means Grin

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 15/01/2017 18:31

is there an easier way of doing this?

I've never done it, that's seems quite easy Grin. Unless it snows and it is only just freezing, surely you don't get wet? It was tipping with snow when we went, but it just brushed off. My jacket has been washed loads and I've never nikwaxed it? Am I missing something? (Genuine question, I'm not being snippy).

gingercat02 · 15/01/2017 19:50

I'm no skiing expert but we just wash on a cool wash and line dry (or hang all round the house depending on the weather). We don't have woolies apart from the odd hat. I wasn't planning on washing anything before we went it was all clean when it got put away. The only prep apart from shopping was to get the skis serviced!

montezumasrevenge · 15/01/2017 19:57

You pair of show off'sGrin

Maybe I'm wasting my time then, some of this stuff is on year 7 of use though, I don't want to be the one with a wet bum after yet another fall so will persevere. I'll never buy another white effing jacket though Angry

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 15/01/2017 20:29

I saw a very nice looking woman in a white outfit last year. Beautifully turned out and looking glam. When she turned round, she looked like she'd pooed herself Shock, it must have been a muddy button lift or something. It did make me think, noooooo to the white kit!

Good luck with the washing.

montezumasrevenge · 15/01/2017 20:54

Yes that was me Grin

We're in PdS at the moment.

The snowfall last week was very much needed and there is some good skiing to be had this week, though the snow is obviously thin in places.

It is very cold -20 according to snow forecast and that feels about right up at the top.

No snow forecast for this week, more is needed.

Trying to add photos but the wifi here is very slow!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 16/01/2017 14:56
