Thanks, I've been in touch with that company and they sound fab. It would suit us down to the ground as skiers, I'm just trying to find somewhere with enough to keep the non skiers happy too. It's not an easy task!

mycavitiesareempty · 27/02/2017 22:22

What are your requirements in terms of:
Size of ski area
Character of resort
Altitude
Type of skiing/boarding
Access
Country

Go on, lay it all out, I love a travel agent challenge :) :)

mycavitiesareempty · 27/02/2017 22:33

I wonder whether Saas Fee in Switzerland might be good for you all.

Choc box scenery and village; snow sure; great beginner slopes; lots to do aside from skiing including a whole mountain for non skiers. Downsides: ££££ and can be dark mid-winter.

A very unpopular choice with families but it's actually excellent if you pick your spot with care is Cortina in italy. They will have the runs open even if it has not snowed since the previous winter, it's phenomenal for non skiers, and has excellent tuition, beginner slopes and food. The scenery and setting is amazing.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/02/2017 22:35

This could be a challenge!

Ski area / type of skiing: enough to keep us skiing variety of runs for the week. We're happy on reds. 2 kids like jump parks (not the adults) and snow cross etc. One child skiing for the first time so very easy access to nursery slopes are a must.
Character of resort: not purpose built, ideally traditional. The grandparents like Morzine. Ur Christmas snow has been poor for too long
Altitude: main requirement is the nursery slopes. The rest of us can easily get up higher with lifts.
Access: ideally maximum of 2 1/2 hour transfer. Flying from Bristol, Birmingham or Cardiff.
Country: not important.

Wherever it is we'd like sole occupancy of a catered chalet with a hot tub that's within very easy walking distance of the town and nursery slopes.

Not too tricky I hope!

mycavitiesareempty · 27/02/2017 23:00

Actually you know, Saas Fee meets most of those requirements if you manage to find somewhere to stay near the nursery slopes/ lifts.

It's small but you can go to saas almagell or saas grund for variety.

You could also consider Corvara in Italy, or linked resorts of San Cassiano, Colfosco. They don't tend to major on catered chalets there but I think there is at least one company that does this - Collets Mountain Holidays (?sp) . It's not high but they are masters of snowmaking and slope maintenance. True masters. I would never worry about holidaying there unless there was a freak saharan heatwave.

Have you been on Snowheads website? It's really good for resort suggestions.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 28/02/2017 14:29

Brilliant, thanks for the recommendations. My search has been narrowed down significantly!
I've not been in Snowbeads - will take a look though.
MN at its best again!

trixymalixy · 07/03/2017 10:08

50cm of snow fell last night in the grand Massiff. Only problem is that trees falling have taken out the power to the area and the chairlifts aren't running so can't get to it!!

SkiBike007 · 13/03/2017 14:29

5 sleeps till we go SO excited Grin massive pile of clothes started building on bedroom floor in prep, mostly the kids as I've got manic week at work this last day to think about packing Smile can't wait hope it doesn't warm up too much as the big dump of snow from last week looks like it's melting on lower slopes.

lovetoskimum · 14/03/2017 08:24

SkiBike007 · 14/03/2017 17:00

Grrr auto correct leg and fell!

PestoSnowissimos · 14/03/2017 17:08

Well it's been 3 + 1/2 weeks since I broke my knee on our last day skiing and I am still awaiting for treatment. I feel Sad

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 15/03/2017 18:18

Oh no that's a long wait, I'm not surprised you're feeling blue. I hope something happens soon.

thatdearoctopus · 15/03/2017 20:01

Lovetoskimum Just seen your updates! That is EXACTLY what I did 4 years ago now! I slipped on the stairs 5 weeks before we were due to go skiing, and ended up in hospital having surgery for a spiral break of the tibia, fibula plus ankle. (posted at length under a previous name).

I spent the first few weeks wanting to top myself (First World problem, I know), but when it came closer to the departure date, I manned up and decided to go along on the trip anyway, on crutches. I couldn't stay home alone as I couldn't manage, and our whole family ducking out would have made it very difficult for the other three families on the trip. It was a challenge, but ultimately nicer sitting reading on a sunny balcony overlooking the snowy mountains with people bringing me vin chauds regularly. than at home in Blighty in the rain.
Looking back, I must have been insane, as I couldn't even put my foot to the ground and bloody French ski resorts aren't known for universal disabled access.
Anyway, chin up. I got back on skis the following year (terrified, I admit and shockingly unfit - the first drag lift almost killed my rusty leg muscles) and I've been each year since, although I confess I've developed 'Fear' and now stick to easy Blues.

Good luck with it all.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 17/03/2017 07:16

Just booked my girls weekend for next year... now just the looooong wait.

We are going back to the UCPA, which if you've never discovered it, take a look. AMAZING value and the food is to die for. The best thing is it's cheap as chips. The place to look is Action Outdoors in the UK as they are the UK rep.

PestoSwimissimos · 21/03/2017 11:58

Oooh Cunty, that sounds fab & it's always good to have something to look forward to Smile

lovetoskimum · 21/03/2017 20:05

Hey guys, thanks so much for all your messages, 3 weeks today plaster off! Not great on crutches for some reason!! Still being driven mad by day time tv! I don't know how people do it!! At least no money lost and onwards and upwards to next year!! 😄😄😄🎿🎿

PestoSwimissimos · 21/03/2017 20:10

Pleased to hear you're so close to losing the plaster Lovetoskimum. Hopefully you will soon be back to full fitness.

I only got seen 4 weeks after my ski accident, at the end of last week and was told I'd have a 16week wait for the surgery I need on my knee. Sad

I'm still in a lot of pain waiting for treatment, so I decided to go private and now I have my surgery booked for 2 weeks today - yippee!!!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/03/2017 23:23

Glad all the broken peeps are on the road to recovery, or at least have a plan

We've booked for Christmas - going to Tignes Le Lac. Not quite what I'd envisaged but all members of the group are happy so that's all that matters.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 22/03/2017 07:45

I love Tignes much not pretty, but the skiing is awesome, and guaranteed on the glacier. I've done the black back into Le Lac on my face... holds some great memories Grin

Glad our invalids are all going in the right direction.

KingscoteStaff · 09/04/2017 11:45

Just back from Courchevel 1650 - wonderful week with DH and 2 teens 15 + 13. Joy joy joy.

All those hours of skiing backwards down nursery slopes and searching for lost mitts and high speed rushes in the morning to be back to pick up from ski school are WORTH IT!

The joy of skiing together as a family and watching our 2 zoom down anything with style. Can't tell you!

SkiBike007 · 10/04/2017 08:19

I love that feeling kings when the whole family is enjoying it together. My DDs are are at the other end ages only 5&9 but we had fab days as youngest had no fear zooming down blue at front of the resort biggest grin on her face Grin that she too could now join in.

gingercat02 · 16/04/2017 10:30

This is probably the last of the season but just back from VT last night. DS is officially a skier and he has the bug! We had a great time, the weather was glorious. The greens were a bit slushy in the afternoon but It was worth it for the sun.
Val Thorens is a lovely village and we would definitely go back. Thinking about next years dates asap

bluetongue · 18/04/2017 11:54

I've already booked leave for my trip next year Grin

Next trip will be Japan. I've been a couple of times before (live in Australia) and while the resorts are a bit on the small side it's worth going just for the food Smile

Soooo jealous of most of you being able to just pop over to the alps.
