hasn't this gone far enough? these threads are being allowed to stand which considering the "policies" of the BNP and the views expressed by "activists" is appalling. yes, free speech is wonderful, but some of these threads can be seen as inciting racial hatred, there are many, many, disablist, homophobic, racist remarks made and implied and they always go the same way. the threads are started to cause a bunfight. the BNP will not get anymore supporters on here, so why be deliberately controversial?

mn is a self-moderated site. this is great and one of the reasons i use it. however, the mners are now moderating and saying that we have had enough. we have complained a LOT about this type of thing - please take note!

...but i heard somewhere she wasn't allowed to namecahnge, is why i mention it.

Whether it's true or not, I don't know.

Aitch · 13/05/2010 10:24

oh yes, she'd have to sign up again, from the start, as a whole new member. most of us have IP addresses that will do that nowadays. or she could just ask MNHQ to change her name, presumably she's in contact with them often enough...

lemonmuffin · 13/05/2010 10:42

Do you not think that if MNHQ thought there were grounds for a ban it would have been done by now?

Likewise with the troll accusation. The fact that it hasn't kind of suggests to me that they don't agree.

If they don't agree, but posters are making their views clear, then hopefully the person in question will see that they have to take some action themselves. That is generally how society works.

daftpunk · 13/05/2010 10:45

Aitch;

I am not a troll.

I have done nothing wrong, I have started threads about politics in the correct section. I have some views that a few people don't like, I can't really help that. This is an open forum with 1000's of members, it's obv that you will come across someone you don't really "get" so to speak.

There are a few people on here I really can't stand, I avoid them, I never post on their threads and I never get myself into a situation where they might talk to me.

There's no point in me namechanging because I would out myself witin a week, and anyway, why should I..?

I haven't done anything wrong, and where it has been pointed out to me that I have upset someone, I have always apologised.

Sometimes it's good to have people tell you things you might not here in RL, ime RL family and friends tell you what you want to hear, you need people to give you a different perspective on situations...that's the beauty of open forums imo.

I have said I will be more aware of what I post, I have been wrapped up in politics for the last yr, probably why you have noticed the change in me since then....there's nothing sinister going on.

I have read this thread, and clearly I have become a pita to many people, I have said that I love MN and pretty much everyone on it, so...I'll stick to just posting on music threads for the next 2 or 3 months...to let things die down....I wont post on any other thread...I don't know what more I can do for you..?

I don't want to ruin MN for anyone.

Aitch · 13/05/2010 10:52

whatevs, dp, whatevs... if it walks like a troll, acts like a troll, upsets people like a troll and comes back saying 'oh i'm so sorry' every time like a troll, it's a troll.

ConDemNation · 13/05/2010 10:52
Hmm
daftpunk · 13/05/2010 10:54

Aitch..I've done a deal with you here...

3 months!....you wont see me anywhere except on the odd music thread..

Let's just draw a line under this and all move on.

Tn0g · 13/05/2010 10:55

MaryZ, I used the words bigot and egoist in my post, which I guess was hugely offensive and had to be deleted.

Gas really isn't it?

onagar · 13/05/2010 10:56

First time I encountered DaftPunk she was making a statement about religion that outraged me. I don't normally get annoyed over posters as you are all figments of my imagination anyway

Since then I'm pretty sure I have disagreed with everything she has said and yet I would be very disappointed if MN banned her.

Who next? all those evil BF/FF/SAHMs/etc whom the majority don't like?

She doesn't represent the vast majority of posters, but then nor do people who are gay, rich or Lib Dem supporters.

Of course she can be pretty rude, but have you looked around lately? That is hardly enough to make her stand out on MN.

She is in my opinion prejudiced, but then I remember the anti men thread and some of those who posted on it.

Start banning people because they 'deserve it' and MN will get much smaller overnight.

Think of it as an opportunity to explain why those views are wrong and thus influence 1000s of other readers.

ConDemNation · 13/05/2010 10:57

Tnog...how weird. They seem to be deleting everything about her these days.

and Aitch would be foolish to make any sort of deal with someone untrustworthy.

Tn0g · 13/05/2010 11:00

Condem, it often happens though doesn't it?

The one being offensive turns themselves into some kind of victim to avoid facing reality.

it's not up to me to make a deal with anyone, in any case. how utterly bizarre, and another example of how dp personalises every damn thing.

at any point during the last year she could have thought 'i am clearly upsetting these women who have children with SN, these black and mixed race people, these disabled people, these gay people, or these people who have friends and family who belong to any of these minorities... plus MNHQ keep emailing me to tell me to stop or i'll be banned... so i will stop behaving like this'. at any point. she hasn't, not until it's got really, really, unprecedentedly serious. now she's 'offering' a three month deal where she'll only post in Music? she has been trolling on here because she enjoys the attention, one can only hope that in the next three months she finds somewhere else to troll, because if she's not doing it here, she won't be able to stop herself doing it elsewhere.

I don't think that BNP threads should be banned, really I don't. It's important to engage, to debate constructively, to discuss, and sometimes even get to the bottom of the issue.

This being said, it is impossible to have a debate with DP because she doesn't understand any of the policies or their implications so reasoned discussion isn't possible and it just ends up being an unpleasant and nasty bunfight. Over and over again. And you know, I hate myself on those threads because I get sucked in to being really genuinely intentionally unpleasant.

Agree with Aitch, the issue isn't with bnp threads per se, the issue is with one poster. Who has undertaken not to do it any more, so perhaps we should all just draw a line under it.

ClaireDeLoon · 13/05/2010 11:06

I read TnOg's post before it was deleted and I didn't think it was offensive. Seems wrong to me it was deleted.

To be fair if DP is saying she will stop posting her upsetting comments then she should be given a further chance (yes I understand she has had many already). But I'd like to see MNHQ come on here now and pledge that if she does continue with her offensiveness, whether next week or in 3 months, they will ban her without argument. But MNHQ is being very silent for some reason.

patienceofjob · 13/05/2010 11:07

I have been deeply upset by some of daftpunks comments about children with special needs (I am a namechanger here), and I could live with an undertaking from her not to post except on music for three months, if she uses the time to reflect on quite why she has managed to seriously distress so many people with her attitude.

I would see a thread from her to the site apologising for her comments as a gesture of goodwill though to be a prerequisite for staying, especially to parents of children with SN.

We can often take comments aimed at adults and ourselves and just feel anger, but when they are aimed at our children it is ten times worse and truly makes us despair of how the world is ever going to be safe enough for them to be happy.

Aitch · 13/05/2010 11:10

okay, fine, that explains the 'deal' then.

thanks for posting, justine, that's a completely fair assessment of the situation i think.

stillfrazzled · 13/05/2010 11:11

Thank you, Justine, for the MNHQ viewpoint.

I must admit I'd prefer the site without pro-BNP and indeed daftpunk input (which amounts to the same thing) but I have to recognise that it wouldn't be right to stifle discussion around a 'legitimate' political party or fair to ban a poster retrospectively.

So I think your course of action is fair - I just hope it's enforced when (and it will be when, not if) this particular poster gets bored with music chat and starts attention-seeking and being nasty again.
