There was an article/interview with Justine in the Standard tonight and it said you're developing an app in conjunction with vodafone. So when and what eh?

hardcore paid for one obviously ad free

not exactly hardship for free one to carry bit of advertising since we all endure it stoically enough at moment

RustyBear · 02/07/2010 14:23

I like my ipad for sofa-surfing because:

  • it is much cooler (in the not getting hot sense, rather than the street-cred sense, though obviously it is that as well!)and lighter
  • using the touch screen & on screen keyboard rather than physical mouse & keyboard is much better for my RSI
  • I still have my laptop in case I need to visit Flash/Java sites or play my Shockwave games; someone who uses Flash more than I do may find it a pain not to be able to use it on their primary device.
RubberDuck · 02/07/2010 15:09

TBH, I was a flash fiend... but I'm finding more than enough excellent iPad games to totally wean me off .

SoupDragon · 02/07/2010 18:53

There are very few occasions where the lack of Flash is an annoyance. it's never a problem though - if I need it, I'll use the PC.

What will a MN app do over and above just using it on safari? How will it be different?

Just wondering - as that makes a difference obviously as to how much people would pay.

JustineMumsnet · 05/07/2010 18:27

Well it will be a Talk app first and foremost to start with - so when you arrive it will signpost the most popular Talk pages - Talk home, Active convs, Threads I'm on etc not all the other MN stuff - and it will not have the 3rd column down the right of the page - currently displaying Talk discussions of day, ads, Twitter box etc

We'll post a fuller spec up for folks to comment on soonest.

JustineMumsnet · 05/07/2010 18:57

A bit more detail, as promised:

App will consist of a home page with links to the most common functions of Talk - Threads I'm, Threads I'm Watch, Topic List, Active Convos. There will also be some space for some some user-selected topics. You will be able to browse the topic list a category at a time.

The threads themselves will be displayed in a similar way to the web version now. There will be no columns, but there will be a couple of ads in the run of the page.

Posting will be as now, but somewhat simplified - the instructions for use of emoticons won't be there for example, or at least not permanently but might be available from a link. You will be able to subscribe to threads that interest you. There won't be functions to exclude threads or topics, nor will some of the customise options be there - there will only be a single colour scheme (based on Mumsnet New), you won't be able to say how many posts per page, etc. but you will be able to choose if you read up or down the thread chronology.

There will probably be a search function though possibly not in the first version.

Hope that makes sense - we are trying to balance simplicity with functionality (and speed of development)

It sounds bloody marvellous - I can't wait .

I find MNing on my iPhone via Safari a complete pain in the neck - can never get the font size just right, no matter how hard I try, and MNing as I do in Classic, the scrolling down through threads can be something of a challenge.

loonyrationalist · 06/07/2010 17:22

Agree with those who have said taht a free ads app & £a couple for an ad free one is the way to go.

loonyrationalist · 06/07/2010 17:23

Hooray for android app on the horizon too -I knew you wouldn't let us down

GypsyMoth · 06/07/2010 17:26

justine....WHEN is it going to be available!!! hurry up!

SagacityNell · 06/07/2010 20:31

Sounds good.

The problem with MNing from safari on ipod (or iphone but i don't have one!) is that there are far too many things to accidently click on the screen.

Dalrymps · 22/07/2010 14:24

Any update on this yet?

JustineMumsnet · 23/07/2010 09:54

App is in development - shouldn't be too long now [famous last words]

Dalrymps · 23/07/2010 11:32

Can't wait!

MmeLindt · 09/08/2010 22:53

Missed this thread, just wanted to say that I would be happy to pay for an ad free version.

AuntieBulgaria · 09/08/2010 23:23

Yes, also would prefer to pay for ad-free iphone app.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 17/08/2010 12:54

I'm sulking now...I have a HTC Desire...I NEED an app :(

Iphone FAVOURITISM!

NetworkGuy · 06/09/2010 16:31

MNSP - hope you are enjoying use of your HTC...

From time to time (once a week?) there are new threads on geeky_stuff from Desire owners so wonder if you have found useful (+ free) apps they might also use...

No pressure on you, but with no HTC it's awkward (for me) to give useful feedback... IYSWIM Blush
