There was an article/interview with Justine in the Standard tonight and it said you're developing an app in conjunction with vodafone. So when and what eh?

OP posts:
JustineMumsnet · 01/07/2010 08:33

Hello - it is quite spendy to develop. (circa £30k) - we are doing some cross promotion with Vodafone to help pay for it.
Re charging - not sure - we were thinking of incorporating ads (not intrusive ones). What do you think a reasonable charge would be? I haven't even seen an ipad yet, but am sure we'll get to that too at some point...

FolornHope · 01/07/2010 08:33

oh dont get me excited chateau

BecauseImWorthIt · 01/07/2010 08:36

Well, I paid £2.59 or £2.99 (can't remember exactly) for The Guardian, so happy to pay equivalent for MN.

But I bet you'll have lots of bleating complaints about having to pay for it ...

(Ouch at £30K!)

Rockbird · 01/07/2010 08:36

I'd pay for it. Every time I MN on my iPhone I open that youtube video as it's exactly where I put my finger when I'm scrolling down the page. It gets right on my tits!

You could always do a free lite version with ads and a paid for no ads version, or even offer it free for a couple of days.

Great news. I would probably pay up to about £3 for it, I rarely pay more than that for an app. But mobile friendly version might be enough without getting app. Amazon have an app and a mobile friendly version of website, and the mobile friendly website is actually easier to use on an iphone than their App.

Do you need any testers Justine?

PuppyMonkey · 01/07/2010 09:42

have only got an iPod touch, will it work on that?

RubberDuck · 01/07/2010 10:07

I'd pay for it. I prefer the £1.79 price point, myself, as I generally think it's a fairer one when the content is already there for free if you use the web browser instead, but I'd stretch to £3 (but whine about it a little ;) )

Now I'd definitely pay more for the iPad equivalent if it genuinely used the space properly/used the interface to its full advantage. I much prefer to view web content on that anyway, so I'd pay up to £5 for that.

RubberDuck · 01/07/2010 11:10

(oh, if I'm paying for it, I don't want no stinkin' ads though ;)

JustineMumsnet · 01/07/2010 11:45

I think we're most likely to stick with our current policy of free to use but with (non-intrusive) advertising.

But if we do one for the ipad then we might have to charge!

SoupDragon · 01/07/2010 11:54

Charge for an iPad one? But thats where I do most of my Mning!!

Although, to be fair, Safari seems perfectly adequate for the job.

Calyx · 01/07/2010 11:57

oooohh yayyy I'm very excited about the iphone app for MN! I would pay... up to £2 as long as there were no adverts but wouldn't mind a free adverty one at first

RubberDuck · 01/07/2010 11:58

Well, you could always do a free version (with ads) and a paid version (no ads) so we have choice?

QualityTime · 01/07/2010 15:57

Ooh excellent. Not that i havean iphone, but on Opera mini once the thread goes over about 300 posts i can't open it and miss all the gossip!

Lymond · 02/07/2010 07:20

I'd pay. I pay for Scrabble and Settlers and some other games; on which I spend a lot less time than I do on mumsnet.

RustyBear · 02/07/2010 07:31

I doubt if I'd pay much for a specifically iPad app, as my main problem on the iPhone is reading long threads & so far the iPad is fine with those.

I hope the iPhone app will not be just for those with version 4.0 of the software, as I have a 3G & most indications are that it's better not to upgrade to 4.0.

SagacityNell · 02/07/2010 09:58

Most of the apps on my ipod were either free or up to £1.79.

Soupy - I didn't realise iPod/iPhone apps couldn't be used on iPad! Have they sorted out the issue with flash yet?

RustyBear · 02/07/2010 10:10

You can use iphone apps on the iPad. They come up iPhone-sized, but you can expand them. The text in them tends to look a little ragged at the edges because they are not written for the HD screen, but they do work (at least all the ones I've come across do) And quite a lot of new ones are now being written so they work on both.
Which is another reason I wouldn't bother with an iPad app if we already had an iPhone one, because I can't really think of anything extra you'd need in an iPad one.

Rockbird · 02/07/2010 10:13

Ha! if you had the readies for an iPad then you can pay £2.99 for the MN app and thereby fund it for all us poor saps that couldn't afford one

SoupDragon · 02/07/2010 12:57

There is no "issue" with flash. apple simply won't allow it to work.

LittleBoxes · 02/07/2010 13:12

oooh, excited about Android one!

SagacityNell · 02/07/2010 13:32

so there is still no flash? DH trying to figure out why someone would buy an ipad over a net book you see (his mate just had this conversation with him!)

MitchyInge · 02/07/2010 13:38

mumsnet lite app = free

hardcore mumsnet app = £couple

to fund ipad one

am not going to charge for this latest in a string of award winning ideas from me
