MN's 10th Birthday Party competition - write a Haiku about MN and win a golden ticket. To be judged by the Poet Laureate. (Not kidding!)

So... it's our tenth birthday and we're having a party to celebrate on March 2nd. And seeing as we can't possibly fit you all in, we thought it would be nice to have a competition to have 10 Mumsnetters (plus partners) come along. As part of the prize we'll put you up in a London hotel, dress you in Boden (natch) and send you out to dinner at Pizza Express too. Full details here.

All you've got to do is to write a haiku (and we know how good you are at those) which sums up Mumsnet. And the 10 best will win. Simples.

And lest you think we might not pick the right winners, we've got Carol-Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate, to judge them for us. So for all those of you who enjoy writing in verse, here's your chance to shine.

Good luck.

Haikus: out of hand.
Iambic pentameter?
Just free verse now please...

CaptainNancy · 22/02/2010 23:18

OKay... how has she done that? Used a small L not an 'I'?

PopeSusanlV · 22/02/2010 23:18

I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those meddling kids......

PopeSusanlV · 22/02/2010 23:21

Errr...no captain nancy

It was actually me that wrote the wnning haiku. Between us I think that pofaced became a bit...overexcited at winning and just wanted to claim a bit of extra glory.

I will not sue her for identity theft as long as that ticket arrives in the next couple of days.

PopeSusanIV · 22/02/2010 23:27

I am PopeSusanIV. [waits for spartacus-style additions]
No really I am. And I am pofacedagain.

Nice try though.

As CaptainNancy points out I do live in an outlandish place and therefore can't make it (and only entered so Carole Ann Duffy would read my haiku so I could say she had). I've e-mailed HQ though and I honestly would have hopped on a flight except I can't get on one for Monday or Tuesday next week. Still there was a slim chance and I could do with a holiday!

CN - it's just a more acceptable alternative to royalty

EllieMental · 23/02/2010 09:40

Comfy · 23/02/2010 10:01

Congratulations everyone. Those haikus are lovely.

cloudedyellow · 23/02/2010 10:59

Yes, congratulations. It's a great thread - and it must've been hard to pick winners. So much wit and talent on mumsnet.
Have a wonderful party!

tearinghairout · 23/02/2010 11:52

Well done - fantastic haikus. Not envious at all.

Second the limerics suggestion, would be great.

Hello again

Just to let you all know where we're at: -
Carol Ann also chose some runners-up/reserves.
Just as well because of pofaced/popesusan's identity crisis and frakkinaround's gloriously tropical life (we are so sorry for short notice, frakkin) we can announce that two of them have been elevated to Golden Ticket Winner status.

They are:

Threads of silky speech.
We are spiders. We are flies
In our safety net. (Anguis)

It takes a village
to raise a child and Mumsnet
to raise a mother. (Bumperlicious)

So we hope they'll be joining us next week.

choosyfloosy · 23/02/2010 13:47

i just can't concentrate until you send the email [cat's bum mouth]

[really good excuse not to work]

ChristinePrattsDog · 23/02/2010 14:49

can they come?

BuzzingNoise · 23/02/2010 14:55

I couldn't get to sleep last night because I was so excited! I'll be the person with huge dark circles under my eyes on Tuesday!
DHgotfed up with me announcing my entrance to every room with 'prize winning haiku writer coming though'

morningpaper · 23/02/2010 17:00

I liked Bumperlicious's pome best!

Bumperlicious · 23/02/2010 18:54

Thanks Morningpaper - I'm looking like this at the moment, and now as I have to get a babysitter and organise time off work.

MP you might be able to help, what time is the party? And do we know what time the meal is? Will email MNHQ to ask to but just need to get sorted in my head what to do.

Bumperlicious · 23/02/2010 18:56

Actually just seen there are attachments to the email - better read those!

Sputnik · 23/02/2010 19:55

Oooo well done Bumper!
