Missing pages - can YOU help us track them down?

So, ever since BigTech made his new releases (which incidentally still have a few wee glitches to sort, before you shout) we've noticed that folks are clicking less on all the Talk topic home pages eg this one. In fact you are collectively clicking on those roughly half as much as you used to and we're completely stymied as to why. Don't spose any bright spark out there has any ideas about what might have changed?

(There's a pack of Christmas cards (or three) by way of reward for anyone whose information leads to the discovery of our lost pages...)

I like to contribute where I can

Ewe · 16/11/2009 21:46

I NEVER look at the main topics page any more, there seems to be too much on there, I feel overwhelmed and it seems to take too long to find anything!

Therefore I no longer click in to the topic main page, i.e. nurseries like I used to as it's not as quick and easy only place I click the topic page is the chat one as it moves so fast.

The topics are a bit of a tit since it moved to that javascript menu but that was about a YEAR ago

Is the change definitely very sudden over the last couple of weeks?

What are the pathways? Have they changed? Is it something to do with the search changing? Does the search offer less clickable topic links than it did previously?

morningpaper · 16/11/2009 21:54

The talk search brings up the topics as a subfolder with a unique number, rather than as a hyperlink with the full name of the topic - is that double-naming affecting the stats somehow?

fruitshootsandheaves · 16/11/2009 21:55

the answer is 42

obviously

whomovedmychocolate · 16/11/2009 21:58

Hmm curious.....strokes beard. How do you count a page view. Is it a page request or page serve or are you looking at clickthrough views of your adverts or what?

I think you may have an issue relating to how the pages are loading so perhaps you are actually missing some clicks here. I note this because when I load up a page I am getting snagged by the adservers so the ads fail and the page does not load. I'm thinking maybe you count the page views once the ads have loaded and so you are missing some.

Here's how to test this. Create a sample page (put it somewhere odd and email someone the URL to it). Put in your ads. Get someone to access it ten times. Time the access.

Now take out the ads. Repeat. You will see the serve time and whether or not you are getting the same number of views.

If I want to go to a topic that I post regularly on I now go to 'threads I'm on' instead of the topic page e.g. chilminders etc. This is because unless i'm logged in there are stupid stupid stupid pages which I hate and detest so I might as well log in and go to my regular topics via the last thread I posted on in it, and from there I tend to go back to Active convos.
The need to be logged in all the time (when I use several computers dotted about the house and need to log off when I leave them) in order to avoid the stupid pages is very annoying.

reallywoundup · 16/11/2009 21:59

shit sorry- it was like going back in time when i clicked on the link in the op- it all looked back to normal- normal readable sized font and everything- can you put it all back like that please?

You know it takes about 30 seconds to load the topic pages because of that sodding cbeebies ad don't you?

reallywoundup · 16/11/2009 22:04

while i'm at it- i have no topics hidden and yet there are some hiding i missed out on some bargain nappies for sale because BigTech someone has stolen the for sale threads- and before anyone asks i have double and triple checked that they are not on any hidden lists etc on customise- the only explanation is that BigTech wanted to buy the nappies for himself

JustineMumsnet · 16/11/2009 22:04

Lost the pages the day BigTech's changes introduced a couple of weeks back

could you check where the pathways have changed - it might just be that the search results are a bit shitter now or something...?

You aren't picking on him, are you? Would he like to come and hide under my skirts?

gigglewitch · 16/11/2009 22:10

read whole thread
Agree with eatsshoots

it's 42, obviously

gigglewitch · 16/11/2009 22:11

err, mean fruitshoots

beanieb · 16/11/2009 22:14

I have no idea what you are asking us!

ledodgyfireworksingedmyeyebrow · 16/11/2009 22:19

I didn't think anyone ever clicked on those pages unless they had something particular to find. I just assumed people click on active and threads im on like I do.

whomovedmychocolate · 16/11/2009 22:20

Do you have a navigational map or anything or a script description for a sample page before and after.

I've never actually tried to see how Mumsnet works before

It would seem to me that if your readership appears to be falling and is not reflected in decreased registrations and usage of the site general it is a miscalculation problem rather than a usage issue.

But look. Set up a topic for 'artichokes' and I'll go hit it 100 times and then you can see whether you get 100 hits.

DidEinsteinsMum · 16/11/2009 22:21

Could it just be that because the site has been much slower people are only persisiting with things that will give them a good mix -ie i'm on / watching/ active etc and not having a floating look at possible other topics because the end result has not been worth the utter frustration?

ledodgyfireworksingedmyeyebrow · 16/11/2009 22:24

That's what I reckon Dideinstein. I have given up after clicking on mumsnet so many times in the last week or so because I just couldnt be bothered waiting that long for it to load. I definately couldn't be bothered with extra faffing with all topics or whatever.

SoupDragon · 16/11/2009 22:24

MP, it's no use trying to appear clever now. You mentioned mitts, shandies nad releases and now you've brought tits and shitters into it.

SoupDragon · 16/11/2009 22:25

"nad releases" That was an unfortunate typo.

whomovedmychocolate · 16/11/2009 22:25

I just realised why my pages are loading so slowly here - you have about four different sources of content per page. That didn't used to be so much. You added Google ads didn't you. hahahahhahahahhahahahahhahahahahh

juneybean · 16/11/2009 22:27

I'm confused, is it not because we're all clicking on active convos instead of going to each individual topic ?
