Hidden space - a hole in the MN time/space continuum?

I have noticed that in long
posts, suddenly there appears a rogue space.

Is this a secret door into the wonderful world of MNHQ, or something more mundane to do with the arcane world of coding?

Look:

Hoping it's worked ....

He's just fallen asleep. Bum.

GuyFawkesIsMyLoveSlave · 05/11/2009 23:24

CatherineMumsnet could lend you the official Mumsnet waking-up stick...

Deadworm · 05/11/2009 23:25

Deadworm · 05/11/2009 23:29

Soft return is when the web page decides to break a line all by itself to avoid poking the adverts.

Deadworm · 05/11/2009 23:31

Going to bed now but sincerely hope Tech will stop sweating over his hard refreshes and code releases so that he can explain all pronto.

If you put the posts into Word & click on the 'Show/Hide' button (¶) you can see the characters the computer uses for formatting text - a hard return (enter) is shown by the right angled arrow, like the one you get on the enter key, so you can see where they are.

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/11/2009 23:38

YYY, RB - but why are they there?!

OP posts:
EinsteinBentLight · 05/11/2009 23:40

Ah the tech terminology for the stuff i look at when using word. Always have the formating showing. Means i know what exactly i am swearing at when microsoft doesnt do what i want throws a girly hissy fit.

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/11/2009 23:43

I must admit, I never knew I was doing a 'hard' return!

Still, having been trained on a 'sit up and beg' manual typewriter, I suppose it does equate to a 'hard' shove!

BIWI - if you look at most of my posts on MN, you will see that I tend to stick to the adding up & leave the eternal verities to the representatives of the Amalgamated
Union of Philosophers, Sages, Luminaries and Other Wankers Thinking Persons.

The Quest for Ultimate Truth is quite clearly the inalienable prerogative of your working thinkers.

EinsteinBentLight · 05/11/2009 23:49

Or is that the 4th floor solution to expensive paperweights....

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/11/2009 23:49

Absolutely, Rusty.
