Who agrees that the emoticons on this site are crap?

Gunnerbean · 03/02/2009 14:47

The site is good but the emoticons are absolute crap, surely they can do better?

They should use the ones from the MSN groups they are far superior to these.

Ah, glad it's not just me I am going to adopt [jimmyhill] for when I suspect someone may not be being honest.

DumbledoresGirl · 03/02/2009 16:04

Actually, although I am perfectly happy with the emoticons here, I do think gunnerbean has a point re some other things. When MN did its overhaul last week, I thought there were going to be some new wonderful innovations on the site, instead of yet another choice of format. Have I missed anything?

PortAndLemon · 03/02/2009 16:08

Mumsnet's quirks (the * and ^ and [[ and so forth) are deliberate choices, not being unaware of the alternatives. By and large, Mumsnetters like it this way. In fact, I now wish other sites would adopt the same tagging conventions because I do them almost-unconsciously now and keep doing them on other sites and having to go back and do [b] and [i] and so forth. Except on the supposedly WYSIWYG sites, which tend to be a nightmare for cross-browser compatibility.

Jux · 03/02/2009 16:10

the words 'gild' and 'lily' spring to mind - as in don't.

ShowOfHands · 03/02/2009 16:13

[jimmyhill] also adopted forthwith.

I too was a 19[cough] nobber at school.

PortAndLemon · 03/02/2009 16:13

These MSN emoticons? I really don't like those, never have. I far prefer the MN versions.

dietstartstomorrow · 03/02/2009 16:13

I did think we would get some new ones with the new site.

They are a bit out-dated but agree I love , we could just do with a few extra's.

dietstartstomorrow · 03/02/2009 16:14

The cocktail one would be good.

Clattered · 03/02/2009 16:18

OP - how rudely put.

Soupy - yes.

Jux - you are right.

Anyone who remembers last year when BigTech found the gin cupboard and changed all the smileys to lunatic garish freakazoids will be eternally grateful our originals are back.

Aren't my teeth clean?

SoupDragon · 03/02/2009 16:26

What's a cough nobber??

[innocent]

SoupDragon · 03/02/2009 16:27

This one is positively obscene - a cough nobber if ever I saw one.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2009 16:28

And here we have constipated

mysterymoniker · 03/02/2009 16:29

I like this one

thumbwitch · 03/02/2009 16:30

I love the emoticons on here - they have the best grin.
But I agree we could do with a couple more, as sometimes has to double as Confused and can be taken the wrong way; and we do really need some kind of [ewwww!]

simple but effective, most of these.

(of course, they would have looked fab with bunnets on for Burns Night too )
There's another one that's missing - [disappointed]

thumbwitch · 03/02/2009 16:32

pmsl soupy @ constipated.
mystery, I like that one too!

Buda · 03/02/2009 16:34

I like the emoticons on here. Am quite fond of them. Esp

Do agree a vomit one would be good.

I do like the bat on the MSN ones though! Very MN.

mysterymoniker · 03/02/2009 16:37

this is a nice, simple way to disagree with another poster

MrsBadger · 03/02/2009 16:47

posting in rich text (ie with buttons for italics etc and clickable smilies) is a whole other kettle of coding fish vs plain-text posting

I like plain text and it makes threads much easier to read

and I suspect Tech probably does know what MSN Groups look like, it being his job an' all...

Tigerschick · 03/02/2009 16:50

I like the emoticons we have here and I like the way we get them.
I think that no matter how many we have, there will always be someone saying "why don't we have a xxx one?" ... I like just putting Confused or [ewwww] ... there's more scope for being creative.

Tigerschick · 03/02/2009 16:51

Ah - there you go, thank you MrsB - I like 'plain-text posting' ... that's what I meant.

raisingrrrl · 03/02/2009 16:52

I like this one.

AnarchyHeart · 03/02/2009 16:52

Dunno about plain/rich text but I prefer MN style to more complex ones.

It keeps the focus on content.

thumbwitch · 03/02/2009 16:53

not so keen on that one, mystery - might be seen as a tad aggressive, no?

OhHowMarvellous · 03/02/2009 16:55

I'm with Buda, I like the bat.

Those ones last year were dreadful weren't they? The other MSN ones on P&L's link are shite.

mysterymoniker · 03/02/2009 16:59

no, it is nice

a case of actions speaking louder than words

better than this one anyway
