Who agrees that the emoticons on this site are crap?

The site is good but the emoticons are absolute crap, surely they can do better?

They should use the ones from the MSN groups they are far superior to these.

I dislike going on other sites because of cutsey pictures, tickers, emoticons that take up so much space and distract. I need to skim read and fast. That is what I like about mn - it is about the views. People should be able to express themselves and feel confident that they are understood in words alone. That is a sign of education and higher thinking.

cyteen · 03/02/2009 15:17

SoH, i find you can convey much the same impression with [headdeskheaddeskheaddeskheaddesk]

ShowOfHands · 03/02/2009 15:44

Oh I do like that cyteen. I shall implement forthwith. copyright cyteen. Lovely.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2009 15:45

Go and use another site if you don't like the emoticons.

Tortington · 03/02/2009 15:47

we are missing a chin rub emoticon, we definatly need a thinker or pensive emoticon imo.

but i wouldnt like to see things bouncing around, oh no, that wouldn't do at all.

MrsBadger · 03/02/2009 15:48

what I do like is the fact we can put anything we like in square brackets, thereby bypassing the need for the actual picture

eg

[bleurgh]
[ponders]
[nudge nudge, know what I mean, nod's as good as wink to a bliiind bat, eh?]

etc

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 03/02/2009 15:50

no. Nice how it is. We get creative

HATE bouncing emoticons all over the place. A few well chosen words - far better!

That said, I have been banging on campaigning for [boggle] and one that is banging it's head against a wall for BLOODY AGES.

Nobody ever listens to me.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2009 15:50

Did anyone else use to rub their chin and say "Jimmy Hill" to denote they thought that the speaker might be lying?

SoupDragon · 03/02/2009 15:51

See, I think [boggle] conveys it far better than any little yellow face could.

OhHowMarvellous · 03/02/2009 15:51

I don'[t know but I think you could be a bit politer in your title, it must be awful reading rude thread titles for tech

mysterymoniker · 03/02/2009 15:52

I want a little throbbing loveheart emoticon for when someone posts a nice a picture of a horse/dog/other animal

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 03/02/2009 15:54

its, not it's

oh the shame.

mysterymoniker · 03/02/2009 15:55

a vomit one would be good then we wouldn't have to keep reading every 3rd message

AnarchyHeart · 03/02/2009 15:55

I like the MN emoticons. Less is more and all that.

I hate going on sites with all-singing-all-dancing emoticons. They are just full of thick people using dancing cucumbers when actually words would be a lot more pleasing on the eye and convey the message better.

IMVHO.

I always look for when i'm on msn and forget it's just on here!

What version of msn do you have? I was party to the adoption of the emoticon from msn to here!

psychomum5 · 03/02/2009 15:56

I LIKE the emoticons here, altho I would like an axe waving one.

is THE best face out.

they could do with a couple more, but TBVH, emoticons are for people with no imagination to use discriptive language

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 03/02/2009 15:56

Oh god yes, soupy. It was very much The Thing when I was at school, back in 19

Very stupid.

cyteen · 03/02/2009 15:57

SoupDragon we used to say 'itchy beard' or sometimes just 'beard' when doing the chin rub.

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 03/02/2009 15:59

yup. that too.

Christ on a bike but we were nobs.

Gunnerbean · 03/02/2009 15:59

None of the ones on MSN groups move - there are not that many of them either. They are just far superior to these here that's all.

I'm not a teenager, don't send text messages and and wouldn't even know how to use Facebook so don't want to see this site bogged down by silly moving graphics and talking smilies but a better range of emoticons would do the site more justice than the poor excuse for emoticons they have here. Hmmm is about the best.

Some of MSN's non moving emoticons are pure class compared to these - swapping these crappy old things for just 10 of theirs would be a huge improvement,. They're much easier to use too - you just have to click on them.

If anyone in Mumsnet Towers or whatever you call it is reading this - go and look at MSN groups and take a few tips from there. The whole process of posting a message there is far simplier than it is here - all this having to put ** and ^^ around things to make it come out in bold and italics is soo prehistoric - can't you do something about it the next time you shut this thing dwon for maintenance?

DumbledoresGirl · 03/02/2009 16:00

Gunnerbean - the crying one moves. But I take your point.

dizzydixies · 03/02/2009 16:00

what about a [forfecksaketodayisnotgoingwellsomeonehelpmebforeIdosomethingdrastictomykids/dh/self (delete as appropriate)] emoticon?!?

SoupDragon · 03/02/2009 16:01

The sleepy one moves too.

DumbledoresGirl · 03/02/2009 16:01

Oh yes so it does! And the eye rolling one (that would be a good one for here)

psychomum5 · 03/02/2009 16:02

gunnerbean, if you think this site has crap face, then feck off to where they have faces to suit yours!!!

please very nicely
