Just sort it out please.

I don’t know any website as badly run as this one.

You deserve to lose all your advertisers and lose the website.

Is it seriously still true that unpaid volunteers are doing moderation work on MN? Why? I don't just mean why would an advertising business rely on volunteers in any way. I also mean why would anyone want to take on this role?

I could sort of understand it 15 or so years ago, when MN very heavily traded on the semi (or total) fiction that it was some sort of campaigning grassroots group, but it is pretty amazing that this is still the situation.

MyThreeWords · 13/08/2026 11:21

Just seen that lots of posts have had to be deleted for personal attacks on MN staff. If you insult employees who are just doing their job, knowing that those employees have to read your venom, you are likely to be very much worse than whatever trolling or abuse you are complaining about. Do you also slag off retail workers, waiters, NHS staff to make their stressful days worse?

@BeckyAMumsnet what's happened this time?

Something to do with GIFs, I'm guessing? Can you disable GIFs? There's one poster in particular who used to splash them all over every stupid post she made although I don't think I've seen her for a while so hopefully you banned them.

Could you maybe post a new thread to explain what's happened, what Mumsnet did wrong and how it's going to be resolved in future? I can't be the only one who is in the dark here.

She's still around in a new name. As to whether she's meant to be or not I couldn't say but still pissing those bloody gifs all over the place.

Those posts were made by the troll

OneStarAwake · 13/08/2026 11:27

@BeckyAMumsnet maybe MN should suspend new registrations after hours for a few days?

Hello @spokenorchid we're being trolled overnight and yes they were finding risqué GIFs to add some...colour...to their posts. We've since placed tighter restrictions on the GIF content.

@MyThreeWords thank you - the deleted posts were the troll in question, though. We do have paid moderators. Nightwatchers are not expected to moderate the site or have set hours. If they happen to be using Mumsnet and spot something concerning, they can temporarily hide the content and suspend the account’s ability to post until a moderator reviews it. It’s an entirely voluntary extra layer of support, and we’re enormously grateful for the help they give us.

Sorry just so we’re all clear… you do have paid moderators in the daytime. There is no moderation overnight. The night watch aren’t unpaid moderators in your words, so there is no moderation overnight.

You still sound like you think the gifs were funny

They weren’t ‘risqué’ they were offensive

spokenorchid · 13/08/2026 11:48

Thanks @BeckyAMumsnet - sorry to hear this. A lot of stuff seems to happen on here overnight which is a concern!

Can you not just disable GIFs entirely? I don’t see that they’re needed, and if someone is finding a way to abuse the feature it seems logical to just remove it?

I really still don’t understand the overnight moderation that’s not moderation though. Surely MN makes enough money from the ads that are plastered everywhere that there could be one member of staff overnight to moderate the boards? Do you rely on unpaid foreign labour? Seems a bit unethical to me. But then Justine was asking for photos of naked teenagers the other week so who knows what code of ethics this site follows any more.

Do you have paid moderators working evenings and overnight?

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 13/08/2026 12:03

@spokenorchid But then Justine was asking for photos of naked teenagers the other week so who knows what code of ethics this site follows any more.

Oh thank you for reminding me about when Justine was asking for the photos of naked teenagers, I had almost forgotten that.

I've tried reporting stuff overnight before, and things are usually still up until mid morning (presumably when the mods have woken up and got sat down at their desks or whatever.)
There seems to be absolutely no moderation in the early hours.
I've since learnt that from a previous post like this that you're supposed to tag Night Watch or something in the hope they pick it up, but how many people are going to know that? You'd think pressing the report button would work like it usually would.

Why on earth was she asking for such photos? That’s grim

Londonmummy66 · 13/08/2026 12:24

@BeckyAMumsnet - can't you just say that no images or GIFs are approved overnight - should deal with the immediate issue?

Justine was asking for naked pictures of teenagers - that is appalling.

EverytimeItPours · 13/08/2026 12:37

I don’t understand how this website gets away with unpaid volunteers anyway. Unless someone is work shadowing (and not actually doing any work) or working unpaid for a charity, then NMW rules apply and anyone doing work should be paid.

OneStarAwake · 13/08/2026 11:27

I said something similar yesterday and the response was that someone may desperately need help and that apparently outweighs all the regular late night users being exposed to this filth . It isn’t all about gifs and images ( edit)
