What is it that has happened again?

A repulsive troll. Third night running it has popped up.

Even on a thread discussing the news of a murdered child.

It’s every night, and it’s basically making their site unusable after standard working hours because mumsnet won’t employ moderators paid round the clock.

You’d think after the child abuse images, that would have been a priority hiring but.. no. Profits first.

They don’t even give their unpaid volunteers proper moderating tools.

Given the nature of the images people were subjected to last year it’s ridiculous that this is happening repeatedly.

Nightwatch are extra eyes, not unpaid moderators, and they have deliberately limited powers and responsibilities. We’re hugely grateful to them, but they are not expected to patrol the site all night or carry responsibility when a determined troll gets through.

They're busy people who are helping you out and you don’t have any regard for them at all, you get paid don’t you? So why don’t you just pay someone who has all the tools to moderate properly? Would you do voluntary work for a millionaire?

It’s an absolute shambles. And the site now after midnight is unusable. This is not sustainable.

Dont blame GIPHY, blame yourselves. You’re the ones who can’t run this website in an appropriate manner. The one I’ve seen was worse than the screenshot I took last night, the one that didn’t get posted for some reason despite it being good enough to be posted in the first place.

My technological knowledge is slender. However, I find it hard to believe that AI filters cannot be set up that would block the publication of content such as that I have seen tonight. I am made of stern stuff but feel quite disturbed by the hostile tone and sordid content of the two posts I reported. It is not what people come to MN for. Knowing that content of this nature can appear makes this an unsafe online space, and not one conducive to sharing often very personal issues. Please, Mumsnet, take this seriously and look for a swift solution so that the integrity of this site can be retained.

Gifs were worse than yesterday. The trolls will keep on coming. I've seen similar behaviour on other forums (a long time ago on outdated ones). On some nights the trolls go on a rampage for hours and on some nights they post just enough to stir up chaos and keep mods on high alert to waste their time.

It's shocking mumsnet hasn't taken steps to solve this. As the trolls said it all mumsnet cares about is making a profit and selling out data.

You’d think an incident as serious as that, that had to be reported to the police, and was reported on by the media would have brought about changes…

but no, despite a multi million pound wage bill (as said by Justine in threads about Covid/furlough and bringing in paid memberships) and a £2.5 post tax profit in 2024 the site still relies on unpaid volunteer members to deal with issues overnight (which those targeting the site know).

There is no 24hr moderation.. this is unheard of in this industry surely?

Unfortunately their primary interest is in traffic and ad views, which is why they allow banned users to create as many new accounts as they want. It is incredibly easy to stop this but they don’t, especially since the user base shrank after they brought in more intense and invasive ads.
