Truncated posts with "show more" (NOT quoted sections)

AromanticSpices · Yesterday 15:02

I've just seen this on posts - having to click "show more" if the post is longer than a handful of lines.

Please please bin this off! I want to scroll and read posts without having to constantly click!

And let's not discourage longer nuanced posts by implying they breach some (very short) length limit...

It's awful.
(NB I'm not talking about quoted sections... literally just text posted in a post)

OP posts:

Agree. It's awful and incredibly annoying.

randomchap · Yesterday 15:04

It's crap, can I have it removed?

Shitzngiggles · Yesterday 15:05

Just noticed this . Something else no one has asked for and we don't need. Please get rid.

Darragon · Yesterday 15:05

Lol I just started a thread about this too. I would love it if it cut off posts from about 20 lines, but it cuts off too short.

GetAFurqingCompass · Yesterday 15:06

It's infuriating and I can't think I've ever seen anyone ask for it either Confused

Error404FucksNotFound · Yesterday 15:07

Yes, its bloody annoying

DanaScullysLegoHair · Yesterday 15:08

It is incredibly annoying!

ratinamustardhat · Yesterday 15:08

Mumsnet, we are trying to READ. What were you thinking?! This stupid change needs to be immediately changed back.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · Yesterday 15:09

I agree. It's just making things more inconvenient as it's added extra clicks that previously weren't needed. Please get rid of it.

PashaMinaMio · Yesterday 15:10

The less clicks the better for any public facing software.
Don’t your programmers know this?
Life’s tedious enough as it is.
Get rid please.

Nah, I think it's actually easier to eyeball for myself if it's a wall of text (and/or if it's full of Chat GPT bolding and bullet-points) and scroll past, rather than have some arbitrary cut-off where I'll probably want to open the post to give it the benefit of the doubt, then get annoyed when it's a wall of nonsense...

Exactly, the only circumstances I'd want this is for those lameo "I asked chatgpt your question OP and this is the drivel it spat out" posts.

DrBlackbird · Yesterday 15:16

Agree. Really annoying. I wouldn't mind so much if they'd set it to truncate much longer posts than the line limit they have set. Far too short as it stands. Should only be for posts that are quoting other posts beyond one quote.

TwoLoonsAndASprout · Yesterday 15:17

It is dreadful. Causes all sorts of problems for people with RSI, for instance - more clicks to get where you’re going is not more accessible!!!

DirtyBird · Yesterday 15:22

It's very annoying. MN can you make it a user based option instead? Some may like it but others who don't could turn that feature off.

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · Yesterday 15:24

Adding my name to the haters. Please get rid.

crabbyoldbat · Yesterday 15:29

Fucking irritating. Get rid of it, or at the very least make it optional.

Urgh I was just going to make a thread in this section. Im really irritated by this, completely annoying to have to do this. Bin it off, bin it off BIN IT OFF!!!!!

Adding my name too, Please get rid. Very few seem in favour.

This is my problem too, not RSI but disability in my hands, its onerous enough moving the cursor round and click click click on stuff.

Melarus · Yesterday 15:34

Yes, I don't like it either.

I'd rather have the "show more" option on the quote box, because the quote is what most people will have already read.

Juneclaire · Yesterday 15:47

Very annoying and unhelpful

ImpPeril · Yesterday 16:02

Truncating embedded quotes - I can see how that would be an improvement. Truncating the newly posted text - please don't. Hitting see more (because you can't see whether there is anything that you want to read until you have) on every other post is irritating and time wasting at best. Typically it isn't the short posts which are the interesting ones!

Hi all,

Just sharing what we've said over on this thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/5551948-whats-this-show-moreshow-less-nonsense-for?page=2

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the change. We've rolled it back while we reconsider the cut-off point, as we agree we made it too short.

The aim was to make threads, particularly on mobile, easier to scan. We'd had feedback that very long posts can mean a lot of scrolling, which disrupts the flow of a thread. We're taking on board all of your feedback, including the suggestions around opt out settings, but we're hoping that once we've adjusted the cut-off point, it will feel much less disruptive.

Personally I think you should have a choice. Truncating any posts, even long ones also disrupt the flow of the thread.
