Truncated posts with "show more" (NOT quoted sections)

I've just seen this on posts - having to click "show more" if the post is longer than a handful of lines.

Please please bin this off! I want to scroll and read posts without having to constantly click!

And let's not discourage longer nuanced posts by implying they breach some (very short) length limit...

We'd had feedback that very long posts can mean a lot of scrolling, which disrupts the flow of a thread.

I just scrolled past 7 adverts, on one standard thread page on mobile, more than one of them the full page kind, and that’s not including the shopping section and the top banner, so 9 including them.

I don’t mind mumsnet needs to make money, but it’s is irritating that on a forum that’s based on user posts it’s being decided that long posts are what disrupts the flow of a thread. That’s the entire point of a forum! Posts!
You can’t with a straight face say a long post (some barely a paragraph!) is so disruptive to a forum that it needs to be hidden behind an annoying button, while having 7 adverts within the scroll of one page.

Is this so that the long posts don't take up too much valuable advertising space? If there's a long post on screen then no space for an advert?

Nope, it's not. Ever since the edit function was introduced it's been possible to click on the text saying "edited" and see the full edit history.

Quite right, put a 'show more' option on ads rather than showing the full lot please and stop doing it on posts where Im trying to read what someone is saying. That is the full point of a chat forum

They're trying to be like Reddit, which is one of the least user-friendly websites there is.

There's no consistency in how many lines are cut off, how many lines are before the cut off, or even which posts are truncated depending on who's looking at them. There's a post on one of the other threads about this that - for me - cuts off half way (vertically) through a line.

I have no idea how they coded this much chaos into the system, never mind why.

Actually, is it AI? Have they got ChatGPT to code it and not checked the results?

Does clicking the see more button count for your click stats for showing advertisers your numbers?

Ironically, I was reading something where the link to something was just being covered up by the See more button. So I didn't.

I'm already finding I'm just scrolling past. I read too much through procrastination anyway so this may, inadvertently, be a good thing. Unintended consequences.

@ProfessorBinturong that's it. It will be AI. You are right. They have bought in some AI consultancy company who have promised to use the site better with AI and they are causing havoc. And they won't reverse it all cos they then will have the explain to the big boss why they have wasted all the money.

It's fine for quotes but the new extra clicking on posts is very annoying and distracts from the flow of the thread.
I access Mumsnet and other SM apps only on my phone so I'm used to scrolling and don't need 'helping'!

If I want to respond to a post, I am now tagging the poster, rather than quoting the entire post, in the hope that this might cut down on the "see more" clicks. Not sure if it works like that, but it will definitely now be more irritating for everyone who is tagged! I'll have to stop doing that as well.

There is no logic to it at all, like all the other hallucinating that AI does. I smell more "interesting" AI features on the breeze, in days to come. Possibly introduced over the summer holidays, with fewer users around to comment, making it a fait accompli by the time school starts again.

I can only see the first two lines (the ones you've bolded) fully. The third line (yours) is semi-faded and the rest is hidden.

This whole set-up from MN is bloody mental.

From some other posters on the other I Hate This thread: if you tag someone, even if your response is only one line, the "show more" appears. So there's no way around it, it appears, than to keep your posts short (count your characters, people!) and never tag anyone 😆(Don't know if this problem with tagging is universal?)

I’ve only seen this on quoted posts - I like it. If I’m reading a thread, I’ve already read a lengthy post, if someone quotes it then I don’t have to re-read a massive wall of text just the response.
