Truncated posts with "show more" (NOT quoted sections)

AromanticSpices · 08/07/2026 15:02

I've just seen this on posts - having to click "show more" if the post is longer than a handful of lines.

Please please bin this off! I want to scroll and read posts without having to constantly click!

And let's not discourage longer nuanced posts by implying they breach some (very short) length limit...

It's awful.
(NB I'm not talking about quoted sections... literally just text posted in a post)

OP posts:

@AmeliaPMumsnet , you said "but we're hoping that once we've adjusted the cut-off point, it will feel much less disruptive."
So you are admitting it's disruptive, just "hoping" the new limit is less so.

Please get rid or at least make it an opt-in feature. (Need I mention I hate it.)

Ah, Im glad you said this because I thought I was going mad because some posts seem quite long and I can read them and others I can hardly see any of it.

Yes just to prove to myself Im not going mad, another thread Ive just been on, read a post, still had the 'show more' option but I must have read around 15 lines. The next post down, had one line showing only!!!!

Llttledrummergirl · 16/07/2026 20:53

This only seems to have hit me today (either that or I've only been reading bits of posts which is why I'm confused by conversations).

It's awful. Please make it go away.

Mikkol · 16/07/2026 21:00

I hate it, it really breaks the flow of reading having to click on individual posts to read the whole thing. Also just feels disrespectful to long posts, someone’s writing a long post about feminism, politics, something in the relationship section, and it’s hidden behind a see more button.

merryhouse · 16/07/2026 21:42

It's only just happened for me too (was it earlier on the phone version?) and adding my name to the Hate chorus

BertieBotts · 16/07/2026 21:46

It is also confusing that the "see more" button is in the same place as the "Edited" marker which I had been skimming over. Now I have to pay attention to check which one it is because I would prefer to keep long posts expanded.

HowSweatyMess · 16/07/2026 22:26

Hate it. It’s actually causing me to elect NOT to see more because it’s so annoying. Immediate withdrawal from the thread - is that the look you were going for? Like we’ve all got quite enough going on - multitasking and paying attention to ten things at once and now this?
I also find it rude to the poster who is having their post truncated. What message is this sending? Shut up you old windbag - you’ve lost your audience at exactly this point? Well yes -
yes they have because I’m sure as hell not wasting precious time and energy on one more stupid thing that I don’t want or need.

Naurrr · 16/07/2026 23:45

'nah.'

Weird outcome for a business to want.

Just assume we want to view posts, and can scroll easily if we don't.

Hi all,

Thank you again for all your feedback on the truncation feature released last week.

We've just released it again with a change based directly on the feedback we received last week. The original cut-off point was too short, so we’ve increased it. This means posts will need to be considerably longer before they’re collapsed.

Long quoted sections will continue to be collapsed, as we hope this will make lengthy posts in quotes easier to scan and read. They can still be expanded and collapsed using ‘See more’ and ‘See less’.

We hope this change is less intrusive while keeping the benefit for particularly long posts and quotes. Please let us know how you find it.

It’s awful and more “disruptive” than long posts. Please make it optional!

Jesus I just noticed the new ‘Edit History’ button.
Why?
So a poster makes edits. That’s their call. End of story. What exactly are we trying to catch people out in changing? There’s already a feature to show that they have changed something. I don’t need to be able to compare and contrast what it actually was. As a poster it’s just annoying, the argumentative pedants will love this one. I have no idea who else benefits from it.
Honestly the site is getting more and more user unfriendly and off putting and more facilitative of arguing.

Edited

That’s not new; it’s been there since editing has been available.

MissionCreep · 17/07/2026 00:22

GetAFurqingCompass · 16/07/2026 19:14

That's always been there?!

Edit function has been added in recent years but ‘Edit history’ is new

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 17/07/2026 00:24

Edit history has been there for ages.

I always look at edit history 👀😁

NuffSaidSam · 17/07/2026 00:28

I also hate it and would like it gone, please.

I almost always use the mobile site and I've never seen a post that was so long I couldn't quickly scroll through it!

@AmeliaPMumsnet

tonight is the first time I have come across this

I needs to go and it needs to go quickly

I was trying to read a thread from a poster having a family difficulty having to hit read more on her posts and replies was very frustrating

I am not sure what MNs motivation for this ridiculous 'feature' Is at all????

but please get rid of it or at least make it something we can opt out of

I try to, but it's another feature that doesn't actually work very well
The vast majority of the time it won't let me scroll up to see the history nor will it. Let me see the list of people who have agreed with my post. Every now and then it works and I can see them but it's rare. If only the tech team could focus on fixing the bits that don't actually work as they should instead of introducing features we never asked for and I just even more frustrating.

StolenTeapots · 17/07/2026 00:44

Get rid of it ffs

Just TURN IT OFF. Why are you wasting time probably having 6777 meetings about this and getting your it dude to faff about? No one wants it.

Spend the money on Biscuit instead

StolenTeapots · 17/07/2026 00:51

You've got some contractors or something in haven't you? Management consultancy types. Telling you to change all this stuff.

It's ok we will forgive you. Just practice saying "no" to them and ride it out until their contract is up.

Does clicking the see more button count for your click stats for showing advertisers your numbers?

Oooh this could be it.

AnAutumnCrow · 17/07/2026 00:59

I agree with those who say:

a) It should be optional;

b) Truncating quotes is ok after a few lines;

c) Truncating posts including the words ‘I asked ChatGPT for you, OP and …’ is a bloody great idea, and please truncate immediately after those words.

Otherwise, make MN whole again, for the reasons explained on the thread.

Perhaps MNHQ might focus a bit more on moderating the derailing of the contributions of posters (ie content writers) who frankly should be a bit more valued within the MN business model at this financial juncture for the site.

StolenTeapots · 17/07/2026 01:01

Ffs. The irony.

Truncated posts with "show more" (NOT quoted sections)

It cut off my last two lines!!

I can’t see it myself, though, when I look at my own post. How strange we have different views.

It’s not truncated for me either.
