Honest to god if I accidentally open that SHEIN advert once more

You only have to BREATHE in the same direction as the SHEIN avert as you’re reading a thread and it bloody hysterically inserts itself and you into a new tab. I hate it! Other adverts don’t react like this so why do they have to?

Hi ColaWars - sorry for sounding like a broken record, but we're asking for screenshots because we've blocked many of these ads but some are clearly still getting through, so if we can see the specific ads that are still cropping up, we can hopefully get them blocked.

Oh, pull the other one.

MurdoMunro · 28/11/2025 14:00

Getting like Reach on here. The constant hanging and reloading, the flashing ads, the ones than load if the dog walks past, lists of other threads bunging up the thread you are reading. There’s surely got to be data about how much all this reducing dwell time??

Nocookiesforme · 29/11/2025 12:24

@JoMumsnet
And yet today I'm still getting the funeral ad with the slider, banners and now sometimes it won't let me pause the video at all. I'm on the verge with crying in frustration - it has bloody attached itself to me like a f**king poltergeist. I'm feeling unfairly targeted here - I shouldn't have to visit the life limiting illness threads just to get a bloody rest from this ad.
Please remove this ad before I deregister

SoReadyFor · 29/11/2025 12:32

Same ....

Nocookiesforme · 30/11/2025 10:56

@JoMumsnet
And it's still here today - it's not going away.
I'm starting to suspect that you don't want to remove it because the money is worth more than my peace of mind.
I'm actually quite tearful now and I will now never use the bloody CoOp for my funeral so I guess that the ads have not done their job by brainwashing me into using them 😖

MurdoMunro · 30/11/2025 12:38

I’m about to delete my account, for a number of reasons and I know that nobody respects a flouncer. But for the record usability is factoring into my decision.

I wonder @Nocookiesforme if the ‘Mumsnet recommends’ debacle been another blow to the revenue stream, I mean who even opens those anymore never mind clicking through and buying something? They’re probably having to accept all sorts of less than palatable ad deals these days.

ColaWars · 30/11/2025 12:58

Does anyone know what the current traffic/engagement with the site actually is? I don’t think it’s as busy as it used to be, probably resulting in the desperation for ad revenue which in turn puts users off. I can envisage the whole thing imploding soon.

Zippedydodah · 30/11/2025 13:07

It’s bloody Sky and Visit Portugal now.
I don’t think I can stand much more of this.

MurdoMunro · 30/11/2025 13:14

I’ve been getting the how do you feel about Labour government poll for months too BTW. I’ve been giving it a false answer every time as revenge for my irritation

CrushingOnRubies · 30/11/2025 17:51

There’s an airline advert Emirates? Which is doing the same

BobLobla · 30/11/2025 18:53

It’s not the other adverts I mind so much it’s just the shein one being so hyper-sensitive that it takes you off Mumsnet if you even put your thumb near it. Which is often when you have sausage fingers like me.

I thought this was just me!!!

TalulahJP · 30/11/2025 19:20

It’s annoying me too. It’s the Qatar Black Friday 20% off advert. It opens as you scroll. I was on the DV survivor 🤕 thread - unril suddenly I wasn’t. Please can you fix @mnhqthanks.

Comtesse · 30/11/2025 19:23

Me too like 10 times a day - super annoying.

It's all the side ads. If your scrolling thumb even approaches them they bounce you into a new tab. Monsoon is stalking me. I'm not an expert but I would suggest it is do with the design of the page and space between the content and ad that needs review rather faffing with individual ads.

BobLobla · 30/11/2025 22:33

Agree. I don’t read local newspaper sites now bc avoiding adverts that open in new tabs was impossible. Hope MN’s not going the same way 😬😩

cannynotsay · 30/11/2025 22:42

Yep I get them on here all the time too

Ohitsatiara · 30/11/2025 22:48

God I hate the Shien ad and you have to keep clicking back...and back... and then you click too far and its all gone, I usually then go off to Facebook or another social media page so mumsnet loses me for the day

Midgetgemsplease · 30/11/2025 22:58

Ruins many a Mumsnet thread. I hate it

TheAutumnCrow · 30/11/2025 23:09

On the recommendation of another frustrated MNer, I downloaded the (free) DuckDuckGo browser app onto my phone for MN use.

It strips out all these bloody intrusive adverts. It also seemingly saves battery life and helps prevent the overheating I was having. Oh, and no more freezing.

ILoveDuckDuckGo · 30/11/2025 23:51

It is not the brands you see that are causing this, it is the third party companies who advertise on here . Around 16 companies accompany you in your reading and scrolling and compete for your attention and data. Add DuckDuckGo as a browser for MN or other ad-heavy websites, and the problem is solved.
My MacBook used to overheat so much, fan going and it was slowing down everything even when I wasn’t active on MN.
Advertising is a necessary evil, and I never minded the ads on the sides or tops. At some point however, they took over.
I hope MN will identify which of the 16 companies uses this ad tactic which is highly intrusive.

I agree.

I never minded seeing a few ads on MN - that was the understood ‘contract’.

But the way that MN has allowed blocks of screen to be inhabited is too much. You can now feel that MNers - whose own posts are the product, fgs - are becoming frustrated with the seemingly endless ‘oooh, send us a screenshot’ responses.

The product, as a result, is degrading.

whoosit · 01/12/2025 00:12

That shein advert thing has just happened to me 3 times in a row and I'm sure I didn't actually click it. So frustrating

Yes I have the same problem, you are just scrolling down the thread and suddenly you’re on safari on the shein page. I will never use them in a million years and it’s highly annoying to keep getting directed to them.
I just end up leaving Mumsnet as get so pissed off with it. The other ads don’t seem to have that sensitivity

TheAutumnCrow · 01/12/2025 00:46

You can see right now how achingly slow the traffic is on MN.

Why are they doing it to themselves?

The company is already being supplied with free product. It already had a fantastic brand reputation and a healthy profit margin. There were ways to grow it that didn’t involve taking the huge risk of trying to ‘persuade’ a critical mass of users to sign up to Premium, that is now alienating the core base.
