The terrible coloured moving adverts...

Puzzledtoday · 28/09/2025 19:23

Sorry to keep complaining, but these days my screen when I'm using Mumsnet is approx 2 thirds brightly coloured moving images. They distract from the text I'm trying to read and after a while, make me feel quite ill.
A previous Site Stuff thread said that advice was taken about accessibility during another recent change, but I think this development has slipped through that net. Anyone with a visual impairment or migraines (eg, me!) could really suffer.

Yeah. It's distracting, annoying & giving me a headache too!

SnowFrogJelly · 29/09/2025 01:04

You should say images of colour

Assuming that’s a joke, it’s so hard to tell on social media?

Also I prefer to use my iPad in landscape but often now an ad appears that covers up a large chunk of text. If I switch to portrait it disappears.

daisychain01 · 29/09/2025 05:47

Maybe spend less time looking at your screen if you're getting migraines from MN. They aren't going to change their advertising strategy because a few people complain the colours are too bright, believe me.

I can feed it back as information surely. MN did say that they take advice on accessibility so they may prefer their site to be usable by everyone. Telling people with disabilities to give up everyday activities isn’t a great response !! It takes a few minutes to give me a headache, not hours, on my desktop computer.

Hi there @Puzzledtoday.

Thanks for getting in touch. Since receiving lots of feedback about the new colours we've darkened them a bit and you can also choose 'classic' colours in your settings which might help. But it sounds like you might be talking about ads here which is probably a different kettle of fish. Is there any chance you might be able to get a screenshot of the sort of thing that's causing problems for you just so we definitely know we're looking at the same thing and we can check if there's anything we can do? As an example, premium membership means you won't see many of the ads, of course, but we'd want to make sure those are ads that would vanish with Premium before we suggested that. Thank you very much!

Thanks. I will do that but it will be in a few days time as I’m separated from my computer now. It happens on my desktop, the adverts are videos.

Hi, I'm back at the computer and this is the current display. The content only moves around a bit on this advert, so it's one of the less bad ones, but as you can see the colour is very bright. The worst advert has a purple background and yellow aeroplanes or something flying around. I'm on a 24 inch iMac desktop computer, and this is full screen. Accessing the site through Safari. I've never had a similar problem when using my phone, but because I'm visually impaired I mostly use my computer rather than smaller screens.
Thanks.

Are you looking at Mumsnnet on an iPhone? If you are, you have the option of the ‘hide distracting items’ function. You can choose to hide all these bloody annoying adverts. You might be able to do that on an iPad to if you’re going via Safari.

Hi, thanks, it’s an iMac desktop computer I’m having trouble with. I’ll see if that option is available on Safari.

Ah, there is an option on the desktop and it works, but only for a minute or two then the multicoloured ad videos are back. I think that the ads refresh frequently and override that setting. Thanks anyway.

Hi there @Puzzledtoday . Looks like you're having trouble posting the screenshots. Could you maybe just tell us which company the ad is for if you see it again? Or if you're able to click on the ad and grab the url for us that would be even better.

Hi @HebeMumsnet
I tried grabbing the URL but it is just the URL of the post I'm looking at. The adverts take up space at the top and each side of the Mumsnet text area, rather than being in their own window. I've saved the screen shot into a png file and I'm trying to upload that instead of copying and pasting.
Today's advert is Peoples Pension. Less bad than some of them because it doesn't have a video element; the flashing light and movement from these is the worst for setting off my migraine. But the colours are still uncomfortably bright, being all around the area I'm trying to read.
BTW, thanks for making the Mumsnet blue less bright, it's fine now.

Hi @HebeMumsnet , here is today's page. Worse than yesterday because the panel on the right keeps being refreshed with new text!

The reason I said what I did is that I've also fed back as I have an eye condition which I have to manage carefully - no real improvements have been made to this site for people with eye conditions, so I'm honestly not having a go, but I would say if the migraines you're suffering are as a consequence of looking at this website, I would 100% prioritise your health and wellbeing. Dont hold your breathe waiting for any tangible improvements!

daisychain01 · 08/10/2025 18:08

Im seeing strobe light flashes on the advert down the side bar. Absolutely horrendous. So I have to close the site until it goes away.....

Thanks, I see what you mean now.
I always prioritise my health by moving away from the screen when I start feeling dizzy or headachy, but I think it's important to press for larger companies in particular to make their websites accessible to people with relatively common conditions like epilepsy, photophobia and nystagmus, even though they can't tailor the display exactly to everyone's requirements - though it would be helpful if they included some capacity for the user to change screen colours and font size.
Mumsnet responded quickly and effectively to requests to tone down their new colour scheme, a tweak which would have been cheap and easy to carry out. I don't know whether it would be just as easy to (for example) prevent companies who advertise with them from using video and flash, or to increase the size of the Mumsnet window in relation to the size of the adverts and thereby make them less dazzling. I hope that Admin will respond soon with their thoughts.
Meanwhile I have been able to indulge my Mumsnet addiction by sellotaping sheets of thick paper to my screen to cover the adverts!

What fresh hell is this? A huge pop-up ad that covers most of the screen and cannot be closed. And the moving ads, ads that change colour when you move the mouse, flashing nonsense everywhere - it makes the penny arcade on the pier look calm and ordered in comparison.

Hi @daisychain01 please can you give us some details of the ad you're seeing so we can take a closer look. A screenshot would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.
