Banned for calling out dogwhistling posts

DebbieHurry · 22/08/2025 07:43

Yesterday, there was yet another dogwhistlng, vague post on the lines of " Should I send my kids back to school in September? Social media warns of a terrorist attack". This is about the 5th such post in the last 10 days. All by posters spreading panic and fear. I have reported in the past and MN has ignored it. Posts continue to mushroom.

Yesterday, I posted telling people not to get news from Tiktok and pointed out that there have been a spate of such posts.
My posts were deleted, and then my account was banned. My previous username was @KateMiskin.

Could @MN please explain why they allow blatant scaremongering and dogwhistling on a parenting site when the police commissioner has urged people not to spread rumours? And why my account was deleted? I said nothing offensive or that broke the rules. I have been a member for over 20 years.

So glad people are trying to do something about this. I am barely on Mumsnet now as I got heartily sick of all this 'what do you think about this' faux naive posts that sounded as though they'd been written by an intern from Reform HQ. Ugh.

HappySummerDays · 25/08/2025 16:11

New one now. New op selling house. Neighbour has put flag up. Predictable responses.

The immigration ones can also be inventive. They don't want to be seen to have an agenda.

Yes, I’m noticing the same words, phrasing, writing style, even the same spelling and punctuation mistakes on many of the posts. It’s a group targeting mumsnet and they’ll always find racist people to join in. I have been ignoring them because challenging them seems to mean a suspension or ban for calling out their racist bollocks.

When the teachers were getting ripped apart in Covid times on here, teachers and others that supported them started spamming the threads with flowers emojis. Another example of a less important topic, but similar way of dealing with them, is people on dog hating threads now spam those threads with photos of dogs. Maybe we need to apply similar tactics here to show that we don’t want this shit but so that we don’t have to engage with these racist idiots.

How about posting photos of the Lionesses in their England shirts on the flag threads? That doesn't seem to be the kind of flag the authors of those threads actually want to see 😃

I agree that scaremongering threads should be looked at much more closely.

I have reported those dogwhistling threads numerous times. The country is a tinderkeg anyway. MN should have zero tolerance towards posts that spread rumours.

If MN wants to ban my account for being a previously banned poster, they can 🙄 I will just open another email account. Exactly like all the bots are doing.

Which bots?

BIWI · 25/08/2025 09:58

@BeckyAMumsnet, what is MNHQ doing/thinking about all of this? I think it’s rather revealing that the only comment on this thread - which is, after all, on Site Stuff - is about an email sent to the OP.

You said in a Site Stuff thread earlier, about racism, that mis/disinformation wasn’t something that you’d allow:

We do (and have) deleted posts where we think the poster is using misinformation deliberately to inflame a discussion, for example or to otherwise cause harm.

And yet it’s happening so often these days. All these faux naive posts about flags or ‘illegal immigrants’ - all calculated to inflame.

What makes you qualified to determine which posts are ‘faux naive’?

Leave it to MNQH to do the regulation and compliance, not you.

That's a fair point. People might be genuinely thick as pigshit and not merely pretending.

I agree.

Thanks BIWI

The key phrase in that response from Mumsnet is ‘Civil Debate’ 😬

What’s happening on here atm is as far away from Civil Debate as you can get!

I've just reread that - 'possible misconceptions' is an interesting take on disinformation.

DeafLeppard · 25/08/2025 17:09

Hard agree. I got a post removed for calling someone a simpleton for not bothering to read the article they were busy whipping up froth about.

PandoraSocks · 25/08/2025 17:25

One thread is now being spammed with every negative report/news story/article/"study" that can be found about Muslim men, the inference being that they are all sexual predators. It is hopeless trying to deal with that sort of tsunami of hate.

This has been going on for a long time. I've complained a few times about the racism and stereotypes and have been informed it's in the news so people will talk about it.

Hate speech is against MN talk guidelines and includes:

Expressions of hatred toward someone on account of that person's colour, race, sex, disability, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion, or sexual orientation.

Branding all Muslim men sexual predators and paedophiles falls under that.

Sadly that's going to get deleted though as it falls under personal attacks. (saying simpleton)
Have to remember to call them out without doing that (I know, I know, funny how that gets deleted straight away but generalising hate for example gets left to stand)

Kreepture · 25/08/2025 17:52

Currently you're not safe on MN if you're anything outside of the 'norm' It isn't a safe space right now at all.

I spent most of the 'spell help' thread on chat trying civil discourse, and had someone post something about murdering witches, which i reported, and it was left to stand.. i had to post on Site Stuff about it and others complain before it was finally pulled. some of the rest was being told to stop posting on MN because witches aren't welcome here... i've been here for 19 years, a witch the whole time.

I don't even want to touch the racist shit on here atm. I already have the christians on here threatening to set me alight.

Serpentstooth · 25/08/2025 20:08

I'm quite concerned about this. I don't want to support an organisation that doesn't make it clear what behaviour is acceptable and what is not, especially with the political developments in USA and developing across Europe. Giving far-right sycophants encouragement is not on, MN, and that is what is happening on here. Either deal with it in a suitable manner or prepare to lose advertising revenue as a result of complaints by Mumsnetters entitled to expect better and who will shortly be leaving in droves.

I reported one yesterday and told mnhq that it was far-right political propaganda disguised as social comment, but it got left up.

There are too many gullible people about. Some of these OPs are extremely artistically done, and the 'thick as pigshit' (as you put it) readers of those posts fall for it every time, and it just reinforces their misguided beliefs.

The amount of far right rhetoric I've seen repeatedly on here is chilling. Remigration, mass deportation, white genocide, suicidal empathy, Great Replacement theory, Muslims as terrorists, rapists and paedophiles, 'illegals' have low IQ etc Sometimes it's like a BNP meeting round here.

I have given up. It would be a full time job trying to counteract all the shit that is posted. I have hidden most of the threads for now.

BIWI · 25/08/2025 15:11

I reported the school lockdown thread as misinformation. This was the reply:

Hi BIWI,

Thanks for reporting.

The post in itself doesn't break our Talk guidelines. We'd encourage MNers to challenge such points within the thread itself as others have done, in our experience, exchanging views via civil debate is a great way of dealing with possible misconceptions.

So we'll let the discussion continue for now but please do report any further concerns, we're always happy to take a look.

I have reported my ‘further concerns’, and quoted Becky’s comments about deleting mis/disinformation. As well as asking why we should have to challenge.

I reported a post recently for harmful misinformation relating to specific disabilities, and received the same reply, word for word.

“Exchanging views via civil debate” is fine if it’s just a difference of opinion…but if a post is 100% factually incorrect, there is nothing to “debate”.

There’s also no point in trying to educate somebody who doesn’t want to be educated, and passing responsibility for challenging harmful “misconceptions” to people within the targeted group can mean misinformation stands unchallenged….because it’s fucking exhausting and utterly pointless.

I contemplated posting on site stuff when I received that reply, and am glad this thread has been started.

I didn't see the posts/threads in question but your activity may have come under the banned behaviour of "trollhunting" if you were repeatedly calling out other posters. Your initial reaction of "reporting" threads that concern you was correct. Mnhq then decide whether the post is in good faith or not. If you aren't satisfied what happens there, starting a thread in sitestuff to ask about their policies should be the 2nd step. Taking matters into your own hands should not be.

This poster has also been on Reddit posts detailing Mumsnet activity.... Which I always think is a little sinister.
