‘Quoting the Op’

FadedRed · 12/05/2025 16:34

Please, please, please Mumsnet, stop posters quoting the original post.
At the very least on the first page of responses (preferably first 100).
I know it’s stupidly easy to quote other posts accidentally now, irritates the hell out of me the number of times I hit ‘Quote’ when scrolling down and find myself at the bottom of the page, losing my place, but please can MNHQ stop the Op’s post appearing multiple times, often in the the first few replies.
TIA

Morning, everyone!

Quick update - we have a solution now.

To improve thread readability, quotes of the Original Post will show only the first two lines by default. If a user has quoted the OP in their post, you will see the following on the thread:

‘Show more’ - if a user clicks this it will expand to display the full quote.
Then...
‘Show less’ - the user can then click this to collapse the quote back to two lines again.

This will keep threads cleaner and easier to follow, we hope, and it will be up to users if they want to read the whole quote again as a reminder or not.

It's not quite ready to implement yet but will be here very soon (no exact date, we're afraid but we thought you'd like to know that it's in train and what to expect when it arrives).

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/06/2025 08:36

Thanks, @HebeMumsnet, that sounds like a reasonable workaround, although I would have preferred an outright ban on quoting the OP.

That's great news!

FadedRed · 24/06/2025 11:10

@HebeMumsnet - thank you for that update, that sounds like a great improvement.

Morning, everyone. We've had a lot of feedback about this and can see it's causing a fair amount of irritation.

The good news is we think we have a solution. It's going to take a little time to implement so won't be immediate but it is on its way! We'll update on Site Stuff as soon as we have any more info we can share with you.

are you going to finally implement the system where all quoted posts are truncated to show only the first two lines? As it does when you use the Quote function to reply? That would be a massive help

Brefugee · 24/06/2025 13:45

blubbyblub · 16/05/2025 17:30

You can just @ the OP. We know comments with no specific quotes are replying to the OP so no one needs to quote the opening post

yes but a message board isn'T just a series of reply to the OP, they develop into conversations.

My preference would to be able to quote, but delete irrelevant bits of the message you're replying to. Or to make all quotes only show the first 2 lines, so you can click "more" to reveal it if you want, or not.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 25/06/2025 20:22

I've sometimes quoted the entire OP by accident. I can't cut and paste on my device, so on a thread with numerous replies, I click on 'quote' which brings the OP to just above the reply box, so I can physically copy type in the small section of text I want to quote and check it while can actually see it instead of having to scroll all the way to the top of the thread. I will then remove the full OP quote and then post. Only sometimes I forget.

mathanxiety · 25/06/2025 20:35

I can't for the life of me understand how or why people get so worked up about this.

What exactly is the problem? Explain it to me as if I'm three.

Brefugee · 25/06/2025 20:45

because it makes the thread really long. If the OP is long it just adds yards of stuff to scroll through - especially if it's the OP which everyone has read, and all that's been added is "this"

especially if you're on your phone

Me too, but that’s so much better.

Thanks for sorting this; it’s hugely irritating.

Ok….

Imagine this. Long, long OP, as they often are.

It takes a while to read it.

You finally reach the end.

Scroll down to the first post…to find the whole bloody OP posted again because it’s been quoted. You just want to read the responses - not the OP repeatedly, especially if it’s long. It just becomes an endless scroll.

Also, it’s pretty obvious it’s the OP that’s being replied to, there’s NO NEED to quote it. What’s worse is when someone quotes a mega long OP, and then just says something like “LTB” or something equally short as a response. It’s so, so tedious.

I’m happy you don’t get annoyed about it - I’ll have whatever you’re taking 😂

ChocolateGanache · 26/06/2025 07:44

@TatteredAndTornwe all know you are responding to the OP unless otherwise stated!

You don’t want to look over in Pedant’s Corner MathAnx !! 🤣🤣🤣

Itsnothealthy · 26/06/2025 07:52

TatteredAndTorn · 16/05/2025 17:19

I don’t think this.should be disabled. In long threads sometimes it’s relevant to quote the OP otherwise it’s not clear who or what you are responding to. And you can’t copy paste from the app any more so you can’t even copy paste the part you are responding to (which is another issue tbh!).

I quote almost everything i reply to because I have learning difficulties and I can't keep the full information in my head long enough. I need to do it so I reply in the right way.

ScottBakula · 26/06/2025 08:05

@HebeMumsnet , that sounds like a perfect way to deal with it thankyou.

Once it's up and running I think it would be a good idea to put a note at the top of each page with either a brief explanation or a link to another thread so people can see what is going on. Otherwise Site Stuff will get bombarded with 'whats happening to the quote function ' post.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 26/06/2025 08:17

For those who don't see the issue, imagine it in real life. Every time you make a comment, give an opinion or ask a question, somebody repeats everything that you said verbatim before giving their response.

I remember having to do reading comprehension in school, and it seemed so ridiculous even then.

"Billy has just bought a new blue hat."
What colour is Billy's new hat?

You always had to respond with "Billy's new hat is blue". In real life, of course you'd just say "Blue".

WingBingo · 01/07/2025 20:57

Can I just say I love the workaround!

edit: sorry, it was in Active, I didn't notice the date!

InjuryMyArse · 07/07/2025 10:31

This is so much better now. Thank you

ScottBakula · 07/07/2025 13:35

I agree, it's much better now.
It stops lots of unnecessary scrolling but you can still see the op if you want .
Thankyou for listening to us @HebeMumsnet

SabreIsMyFave · 07/07/2025 13:40

That's better, thank you @HebeMumsnet Smile

ScratCat · 07/07/2025 13:42

That’s one less annoying thing on here, thanks!

blubbyblub · 07/07/2025 13:52

We need to start calling people out every single time. And when people do other people need to not call them pedants

ScottBakula · 07/07/2025 20:57

@blubbyblub , no we dont , mn have fixed it for us so that it the full post doest show.
Try quoting the 1st post on this thread so you can see how it works.
