‘Quoting the Op’

FadedRed · 12/05/2025 16:34

Please, please, please Mumsnet, stop posters quoting the original post.
At the very least on the first page of responses (preferably first 100).
I know it’s stupidly easy to quote other posts accidentally now, irritates the hell out of me the number of times I hit ‘Quote’ when scrolling down and find myself at the bottom of the page, losing my place, but please can MNHQ stop the Op’s post appearing multiple times, often in the the first few replies.
TIA

Yes!

SparklyGlitterballs · 12/05/2025 16:36

Yeah, be good if quote could be disabled from the initial post. Even more irritating when the first reply has quoted it.

MoonWoman69 · 12/05/2025 16:38

Unless you're brand new and shiny, straight out of the box, then you should know how to @ people. I'm absolutely fed up of seeing huge long quotes of the original post, especially when the first person that comments does it!
Although I have read in threads where people mention it as a pet hate, some people do it just to be goady. Bit sad really, when you've nothing better to do!

This really irritates me - just why..???

HebeMumsnet · 14/05/2025 11:30

Morning, everyone. We've had a lot of feedback about this and can see it's causing a fair amount of irritation.

The good news is we think we have a solution. It's going to take a little time to implement so won't be immediate but it is on its way! We'll update on Site Stuff as soon as we have any more info we can share with you.

FadedRed · 15/05/2025 15:42

@HebeMumsnet - excellent news, will look forward to seeing the updates. Thank you.

@ing people isnt helpful for other posters as you have to scrolled back to see what the @ed person said.

I don’t think this.should be disabled. In long threads sometimes it’s relevant to quote the OP otherwise it’s not clear who or what you are responding to. And you can’t copy paste from the app any more so you can’t even copy paste the part you are responding to (which is another issue tbh!).

You can just @ the OP. We know comments with no specific quotes are replying to the OP so no one needs to quote the opening post

Quoting other posters is fine and very useful - it’s quoting the original first post that’s the issue.

Of course it’s clear you’re responding to the OP! If you’re not, quote the relevant poster, just like I have just done with your post.

It’s the OP’s thread; it couldn’t be more obvious.

I personally can’t wait for the changes.

Agreed

😝sorry, couldn't resist

In all seriousness, it's bloody annoying

Yes quoting works because you can see what’s being referred to but that’s not what I said. I said doing the @ thing means there’s no context without going back to the relevant post.

I really hate when people just tag posters without manually copying the part they are referring too.

The original poster knows it is their thread, so tagging them is rarely useful.
And tagging other posters is useless on it's own as well - noone knows which specific post you are reacting too and it makes following any discussion practically impossible.

If someone quotes the first post later than on the second page, it is at least clear that they haven't read the OP' s updates.

Agreed, that's just as annoying as when people quote the OP. Glad to see at least one annoyance is being dealt with!

YeahNahWhal · 17/05/2025 02:34

Oh, but you are all so new to editing posts here. On other forums where we had editing decades ago, you always quoted the OP on the controversial ones, on the ones where the OP was notorious for deleting or changing their OP to make the first commenters look unhinged. It was a race to quote that OP to put it on record!

Honestly, I have never ever ever seen it where the OP rushes to change their original list and people rush to place it on record. That's happened exactly zero times.

its a completely clueless thing to do, especially when it's a long detailed OP and numerous people quote it and their contribution is precisely 1 sentence (that's a repeat of what everyone else has been saying, like "cancel the cheque!") zero value-add.

it should be a punishable crime!

That is so interesting. Culturally, I do think posters are more guarded these days, so the drunk posting flounces are less common. But around 2010 in Essential Baby (Australia), there were definitely some hot-headed OPs who would try to shift the tone of their OP when they realised they had zero support from the community or were copping (fair) criticism of their rants.

But it was also the time of photo e-signatures with your kids names!! Totally different to today.

I agree with that!

MagpiePi · 19/05/2025 10:50

Can’t we have a new acronym - QTOP - Quoting The Original Post, or RTTOP - Referring To The Original Post, or something?

And, off topic slightly, it would be nice if you could return to where you were after quoting a subsequent post, rather than having to scroll back and hope you find where you were.

SabreIsMyFave · 19/05/2025 11:48

I also hate it when people quote the OP, but can I also add in my loathing for people quoting a post - particularly a long one - directly after the post has been submitted/posted!

I just posted a long-ish post, and someone responded to it, and quoted the ENTIRE POST directly after my post. I mean WTF? Confused WHY? They could have just @ me and replied. There were no posts after my post, until theirs.

I know MN won't do this, but I wish they would stop people quoting a post until there has been at least 5 posts in between! Quoting someone's post directly after it's been posted (especially if it's a long one) is ridiculous - and annoying.

daisychain01 · 22/05/2025 20:43

MsDDxx · 16/05/2025 19:53

Quoting other posters is fine and very useful - it’s quoting the original first post that’s the issue.

...and the issue being that the OPs first post is very often numerous paragraphs long, and if several people quote the OP one after another it's just highly frustrating especially when they quote a massive post and only add one line (which is often non-value add because it's a repeat of what several people have already said.

i don't think people would mind if the OP was a very brief single paragraph.

MsDDxx · 23/06/2025 09:57

Is there any update on this?

That isn't a thing on MN.
