Is it not time now for Mumsnet to leave X/Twitter?

… given everything that’s going on in the USA with Elon Musk?

Doesn’t feel like his/their values align with any of ours right now!

Why not? Everyone else has gone to Bluesky. Ridiculous to still be on there.

DPotter · 23/03/2025 17:28

I didn't even know Mumsnet was even on TwitterX!

I've decided to stay on TwitterX - I like to know what the enemy are up to, knowledge is power and all that. I haven't posted in ages, occasionally comment and keep up the likes on the cat clips to balance out the algorithm.

BIWI · 23/03/2025 20:58

If you scroll down to the bottom of every thread you’re on, you’ll see (on the left-hand side) buttons for Facebook and X (Twitter).

BIWI · 23/03/2025 20:58

I’m actually quite shocked that MN is still on X.

OP posts:
BlueBatBlossom · 23/03/2025 21:10

What the hell? As far as I’m aware this is still a free country with free speech. Cancelling views you don’t agree with doesn’t sit well with me.

BIWI · 23/03/2025 21:14

It’s nothing to do with free speech, or cancelling anyone.

Do you know anything about X/Twitter?

OP posts:
MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 23/03/2025 21:17

Yes, most people I know have deleted their accounts on X now. Who wants to line the pockets of a fascist?

Userlosername · 23/03/2025 21:23

Everyone I know is still on x. Who wants to be in an echo chamber

INeedAnotherName · 23/03/2025 21:33

Hasn't Zuckerberg and Facebook gone the same way as Musk or are you just fixated on him?

This cancel culture is getting fucking old.

I know everyone is entitled to their views whether I agree with them or not and that includes Elon Musk.

Where were you when women were being cancelled and abused and their voices silenced on Twitter long before it was bought by Elon?

What a ludicrous OP but absolutely in line with the rest of them who’ve been told who to hate by the media.

singlewhitetrashheap · 23/03/2025 22:15

The expose on Facebook, "Careless People" paints Zuckerberg as someone who rivals Musk in terms of a complete lack of empathy. His behaviour is completely devoid of empathy. We are nothing but cattle to him. It's just he's not loud and obnoxious about it like Elon is, so he's been slithering about silently. The damage caused in Burma and Myanmar is catastrophic, but nobody cares.

Yes, this! My God, just when I think MN has reached peak bonkers, a new height is scaled. Sheer lunacy.

BIWI · 24/03/2025 08:27

Hmm. See my thread has brought out all the Trump/Musk fans Hmm

For the record, nobody is telling me who to hate @BibiLynn. I’m quite capable of working out hateful behaviour myself. And how anyone can support Musk is beyond me.

I’ve been on Twitter pretty much since it started (Tweetdeck, anyone?) but in recent years have used it less and less. Didn’t like the way it had changed generally. But when Musk bought it, decided it really wasn’t a place for me, given his willingness to give a platform to the likes of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. Free speech is one thing, but hate speech should never be allowed. And indeed, it’s not allowed on Mumsnet. (See Talk Guidelines). Hence querying whether or not it’s actually a place for Mumsnet to be.

No-one is stopping any of you spouting your stuff there if you want to. But there are plenty of places where Mumsnet could be sharing our posts.

(Oh, and for the record @INeedAnotherName yes, I think Facebook/Meta/Zuckerberg is just as bad - just eating the elephant one bite at a time)

Being on twitter isn't about being a trump / Elon fan.

MN are a commercial business who should probably have presence on multiple social media outlets in order to reach a wide range of people including people who have different views to you.

They are starting to have a global presence.

It makes no sense to suddenly decide to go on full cancel culture - they've not before and don't seem to believe in it.

What would be better would be for you to suggest that they start a BlueSky presence.

I am not a trump or Elon fan. Far from it. But I'd be very unimpressed with MN if they suddenly decided to jump on the righteous cancellation bandwagon after everything.

Echo chambers are exceptionally unhealthy. They allow scandals to happen.

Is MN homogenous?

Which values?

Well anyone else would just leave, not try to dictate to Mumsnet that they should leave also. Who do you think you are?

I am not a fan of Musk but I do like X and if it’s good enough for the queen - JK Rowling then it’s good enough for me.

Mumsnet is a business and probably not into petty virtue signalling cancel culture.

BIWI · 24/03/2025 08:38

Who do I think I am?

Well, someone on Mumsnet who is entitled to ask a question. I’m sorry if you don’t like my question!

Mumsnet are also totally within their rights to do as they wish.

I believe this kind of questioning is also known as a discussion. No?

Group think, anyone?

verysmellyjelly · 24/03/2025 08:39

I’m not on X and haven’t been for years (ie not someone who left in response to Elon), and certainly not a fan of Musk, or of Trump. But I think trying to pressure MN to leave a site is really weird. If it makes sense for them as a business to stay on X, they should stay. There are many, many women still using X (not least, JK Rowling!), especially active feminists and many American women. Plus, Bluesky is not a good replacement as it’s focused around an especially echo-chamber type of social media behaviour. That’s not to say MN shouldn’t join and try to build a presence there, but it isn’t like for like with X.

MyNameIsX · 24/03/2025 08:40

BlueBatBlossom · 24/03/2025 08:38

Group think, anyone?

Precisely.

Hive mind.

ImAChangeling · 24/03/2025 08:46

Quite apart from lining the pockets of a fascist, the productive discourse that actually strengthens connections between people and benefits humanity, has moved to other platforms. All of the companies / charities I’m involved with bar one, has stopped updating X and has redirects in place to their other social media accounts.

This. Facebook were warned repeatedly about the hatred being whipped up on FB towards the Rohinga (sorry, not sure if spelling correct), based on complete fabrication, they did not care one bit. Facebook is dreadful and IMO worse than Twitter/ X.
The hatred of women and the death and rape threats on Twitter, pre- Musk were worse than what is now on X. (That is not an expression of support fot Musk).
Unfortunately free speech allows the expression of the worst of humanity.

ImAChangeling · 24/03/2025 08:51

@singlewhitetrashheap @floormops I agree it’s important to point this out.

But at the moment, Instagram and to a declining extent Facebook, are necessary to have a presence on, for comercial reasons. There are no good replacements yet. Whereas X has rapidly become irrelevant. It’s an echo chamber of the far right.

If Mumsnet stopped posting on X, it would probably have little effect on their revenue and signal to the world that they don’t stand for facism.
