I’ve just seen one of those horrific abuse pictures again, I couldn’t look at it for long enough to report it. Is there anyone moderating tonight?

Ahh, I thought there were images in some threads and links (with image previews) in others?

I don't know about the others but the thread i was in they hadn't managed to get the link done properly in their first post. Unfortunately they managed it in their second and third.

I can't recall the site exactly but it had imgr in it. I really hope the police manage to track him down.

I think moderating our behaviour on MN by not talking to
one another is giving them exactly what they want.

I for one will not let a bunch of men (and they will be men) change the way I interact with people on MN.

I see it more as standing undaunted between evil and our space. I’m happy for all to choose their own way, for myself, I report, state I have reported and carry on.

Torrap · 15/02/2025 12:58

Jesus. For this to happen once is appalling, for it to happen again is unacceptable. MNHQ get your act together

JaneJeffer · 15/02/2025 12:46

@Grammarnut they posted a link on the night watch thread while people were reporting it so nowhere is safe on here

What can be done?

ArabellaScott · 15/02/2025 15:06

I thought images were not posted until they'd been checked?

ArabellaScott · 15/02/2025 15:06

That said, nobody should be in the position of having to check them.

I think MN were implementing AI tech to check images.

Last night, links were posted but there was an image preview with the links so the content of the link was visible. Seems like nobody thought of that little problem…

No one visiting this site should be subject to this. @MNHQ's lack of response today is indefensible. Failure of duty of care and failure to safeguard.

They posted the actual pictures on this thread, which I had created to report them on another thread. I didn’t click on any links, and wouldn’t, I saw the images twice (on the original thread, and on this one) before I left and waited for the issue to be resolved. You can see the deleted messages further up this thread from the poster in question.

Yes. I know nowhere on the Internet is ‘safe’, but just scrolling threads on Mumsnet has always felt safe from this type of thing at least. I was a very long-term member, who left recently and reregistered with a new email address. I don’t know what to do now, I don’t want to risk seeing that ever again.

Edited to add, I feel guilty talking about this being traumatic, because obviously the concern is for the children in the pictures. But I suppose that’s a big part of why seeing them is traumatic.

Also, when I say they posted the actual pictures, I know that they are technically coming from a link (based on MN’s responses), but the full large image itself appeared on the thread as a preview.

I didn't realise this has happened again?

Has there been any response from MNHQ @MonotoneHerbivore?

Yes, they’ve commented with updates on this thread and others in Site Stuff.

CalicoPusscat · 15/02/2025 19:44

I'm really sorry to the people who had to see that accidentally.

If MN is turning into a vile site where they subject users to indecent images and can't control it.

Luckily I've never been subjected to it but it is police now. And what about all the pictures of vaginas? Fuck off with that, they need a clinic.

MargaretThursday · 15/02/2025 19:57

Maybe uploading images should be permanently disabled during night watch hours.

MonotoneHerbivore · 15/02/2025 20:04

I was thinking that the images were worse because you can’t help but see them when reading a thread, but the risk of a link is that you could accidentally click on it and then visit the site inadvertently. Traumatic as well as illegal. I’m beginning to think the risk of being here is not worth it.

OP posts:
CalicoPusscat · 15/02/2025 20:21

@MonotoneHerbivore yep me too. I'd dial 999 directly if I ever came across images like that. It's not at the instigation of the person just reading a thread.

MN are doing fuck all.

CalicoPusscat · 15/02/2025 20:39

@BeckyAMumsnet you're obviously not stopping this aside from vague dishwashing.

What are you going to do? Because posters will get angry and traumatised. You're a porn site now.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 16/02/2025 10:48

while I agree that there are precautions MNHQ could and should be taking, and it's pretty plain they've been complacent at times, they are not responsible for the behaviour of shitty men (and these inadequate sad sacks will be men).

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 16/02/2025 10:49

there is nowhere else on the internet like Mumsnet. I refuse to be chased away from it

I know what you mean, I’ve been here forever. But with all of the different things over the years I’ve never really thought I’d leave, this one though, I’m close. And not particularly because I’m blaming MN for it, I just don’t want to see that ever again.

I’ve seen so many prior dramas that have been threads and threads long, and sometimes I’ve just wondered what the fuss was about. But then this has happened, and there were a few half hearted threads for a day or two and then nothing. So yeah, I don’t know. I guess I’m still here though. Maybe the fact that there has been a bit of a muted response to it on both the users and the MN side shows me that it’s changed.

@BeckyAMumsnet I have just received what I think are 4 of these images as a private message, I opened the first, was absolutely disgusted and managed to look away very quickly, but I'm pretty sure this is what it was.

What on Earth are you doing about this? It absolutely cannot continue.

I have reported the message and deleted it as I honestly can't even bear to have something like that in my phone.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 22/02/2025 00:22

@TokyoSushi that's dreadful.

I'd start a thread on The Night Watch topic if I were you.

I'm so sorry you have received these PMs. I hope someone from MN has been in touch with you by now

MonotoneHerbivore · 22/02/2025 06:14

I’m really sorry that happened @TokyoSushi but I’m glad you posted here as a warning. I know further up this thread we were told that we shouldn’t talk about this openly and should just PM but if you’d done that then we wouldn’t have this warning to not (ironically!) open PMs. I hope you get a quick response from MN, the only response I’ve had was the post further up this thread.
