I’ve just seen one of those horrific abuse pictures again, I couldn’t look at it for long enough to report it. Is there anyone moderating tonight?

@BreadInCaptivity - it’s good that they did, but it wasn’t clear from the SiteStuff board. Nor is it particularly clear what’s going on from the Nightwatch board - that is NOT a criticism of the NW board, more to say that your response doesn’t point to a blanket resolution.

Just to clarify, iAm not trying to vilify MN here. Nor the NW volunteers. IAm concerned with freedom of posting photos being removed - that starts a slippery slope as to what we (ie mainly women) are permitted to share - plenty of people would be happy to start by eroding something so innocuous and then keep going.

But I still stand by MN making it more known a) what the problem has been recently and b) roughly what is being put in place (with a timeline).

TBF to MN, they won’t be the only site to be targeted with such vile stuff. Other well-known platforms are (probably) worse for this. It doesn’t make it ok, but I think it makes it important why MN are as transparent or informative, to as many users as possible, what’s been happening and a) how they’re dealing with it and b) what to do if it happens again. As said before, not everyone is aware of Site Stuff or Nightwatch Boards.

Again, disabling image posting would be a huge “win” for a number of people out there. The first, and easiest, step to curtailing freedom of posting. The onus is on MN to be as robust as possible re it not happening in the first place, and making it clear to ALL users what to do asap if anything does get through.

I agree with your entire post.

I don't think the answer is stopping the ability to upload photos and I think many posters are (thankfully) naive about the extent to which other platforms are targeted by such images.

Also the ability for automated censorship.

Even the best AI in this field is not foolproof.

andyouwillknowusbythetrailofdead · 15/02/2025 06:42

Posting photos just needs to be banned. Whatever MNHQ have put in place after last time clearly isn't working.

andyouwillknowusbythetrailofdead · 15/02/2025 06:44

Feeding off any comments about how upsetting seeing the images was and who will continue to enjoy tomorrow the numerous threads/posts about this issue and the posters who will blame MNHQ.

@BreadInCaptivity you make it sound as though people shouldn't be expressing their upset at the images or their frustration at MNHQ for not sorting this properly.

MonotoneHerbivore · 15/02/2025 06:49

Thanks to the people who reported this. Once I saw the images and realised it was also on this thread I couldn’t stand to look at them long enough to report them properly. I also didn’t know about the Nightwatch board. I managed to escape seeing them last time, but didn’t this time. I’d like to tell myself they’re not real but I’m not sure I believe that.

I get what they’re saying but it’s a difficult thing to not talk about. Also - the people posting the images are surely getting a kick out of trying to control women on here too. Also, it would be really weird for those pictures to be posted and for nobody to be talking about it.

OP posts:
MonotoneHerbivore · 15/02/2025 06:53

Has there been an official response yet? I’m not sure if it’s safe to scroll and whether they’ve disabled images again or just zapped the specific ones that were reported.

OP posts:
andyouwillknowusbythetrailofdead · 15/02/2025 06:54

@MonotoneHerbivore it would, and people who have been traumatised should be able to express their upset and anger at MNHQ for allowing these images to slip through the net again.

It is pretty traumatising, I feel guilty saying that because obviously the reason it’s traumatising is thinking that it’s actually happened to the children in question. Not something that you can unsee.

I agree but if it is feeding the desire to upset and traumatise then surely it would be better done in a message rather than publicly?

A message to who?

Thank you for the reports and we are very sorry for those who’ve been affected. Our AI-based filtering system is designed to detect and hide inappropriate images but the attacker posted a link to site which contained such images. We are disabling the feature which shows image previews and have also disabled new registrations and images for now. We'll post more information as soon as there is anything else to say.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/02/2025 09:02

I have no words. Just awful.

YesHonestly · 15/02/2025 09:04

It’s time to remove the add image function permanently.

Can you pin a message explaining this on other parts of the forum ?

PorkHollywood · 15/02/2025 09:22

Absolute degenerate bastards 😤

It was a link. I suppose they could ban links to image hosting sites but that would also involve banning quite a few other SM sites too such as FB or Instagram which people link to fairly often.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 15/02/2025 10:58

Can’t actually believe this happened again!

Don’t think they’ll do this, they kept it all in site stuff last time and deleted messages discussing it in other areas.

Its happened twice now i think the whole board users need to be aware tbh.

Ahh, I thought there were images in some threads and links (with image previews) in others?

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 15/02/2025 12:02

MN are disabling image previews.
I'm disappointed that they hadn't realised that this was a loop hole and been proactive about closing it .
It doesn't inspire confidence in their ability to handle things like this.

JaneJeffer · 15/02/2025 12:06

It's scary coming on here these days especially at night.

I would suggest MN either when you report or separately.

I think moderating our behaviour on MN by not talking to
one another is giving them exactly what they want.

I for one will not let a bunch of men (and they will be men) change the way I interact with people on MN.

Grammarnut · 15/02/2025 12:44

MonotoneHerbivore · 15/02/2025 02:05

Thank you, I think it was on the ‘weird message from friend’ thread on relationships. God it was so horrible. You can’t unsee it, can you.

This is awful. I don't use MN late into the night and tend to stick to only a few boards, but I now wonder if someone is strategically targetting and will move to different boards as each attack is picked up as a way to undermine the site?

JaneJeffer · 15/02/2025 12:46

@Grammarnut they posted a link on the night watch thread while people were reporting it so nowhere is safe on here
