MNHQ: Update on Image Uploads

LilyMumsnet · 07/02/2025 15:06

Hi all,

As you'll be aware, we've switched image uploads off this week whilst we've been building a filter that will automatically detect images that should not be appearing on our site. We've been consulting experts and have built a tool which utilises some widely-used image detection software.

This afternoon, we will release this tool and therefore we will turn image uploads back on. We can't go into detail about how the tool works for obvious reasons but if you do spot anything of concern please report and/or get in touch with us at [email protected] and we'll look into it straight away.

OP posts:

I don't even post a huge amount, am much more of a lurker, but at this rate I'm gonna have to delete my account I reckon, as I don't want to accidentally stumble across something awful within an otherwise innocuous thread that I might be reading. It's just unacceptable.

aspidernamedfluffy · 15/02/2025 09:40

So that would mean that MNetters in the Southern Hemisphere would not be able to post Style and Beauty photos, property photos and all the other stuff that genuine posters share during the daytime, (whilst those in the Northern Hemisphere can), unless they are up at silly o clock in the morning. Maybe MN should pay for Mods there (so in effect have a 24 hour moderated site), rather than waste money on an AI filter which clearly doesn't work

@GutsyGertrude

Edited

So what???? People are posting CSAM. That's more important than a picture of a dress.

💯 agree

But, she's not wrong that HQ has the option to employ mods to work overnight instead of relying on volunteers

I know. I've thought the same thing.

noblegiraffe · 15/02/2025 09:59

Can MNHQ confirm whether the filter has caught CSA images? It seems that whoever is attacking the site is very determined. It may be that the filter works (which would be good news) which is why they changed methods.

Phase2 · 15/02/2025 09:59

Could we have a step by step what to do if we see them?

I would be very worried for the children, my own accidental committing of a crime, how to get them removed asap - do we report to police? An online place?

cerisierblossom · 15/02/2025 10:00

@GutsyGertrude they could, but clearly they won't. So they need to take other steps.

SerendipityJane · 15/02/2025 10:01

noblegiraffe · 15/02/2025 09:42

The AI filter didn’t fail, because no one uploaded an image for it to check. The criminal attacking the site used a different method this time.

It totally failed because it should have "known" that a link will generate an image. I would have tried that when I was 14 and breaking copyright on 5 1/4 floppies in 1980

The attacker did not upload an image directly to our site - they posted a link to an external website. That site then provided a preview of the image, which was automatically displayed. Since the image itself was never hosted by us, it did not go through our AI filters. We are taking steps to prevent this from happening again.

Yeah...apart from the fact that it's so sick and disturbing, I am also worried about any potential legal issues with such images ever having been inadvertently seen on my phone, as that could be seriously problematic from a career perspective too.

it's outrageous that this was able to happen in the first place, but twice in what, less than a week?! And MNHQ can absolutely fuck off with their minimalising responses and "oh we are doing our best tee hee, naughty trolls". MN is a massive organisation, not 2 mums at their kitchen table. Do better ffs. Far better.

I honestly can't believe that MNHQ didn't already have things in place to prevent this. It's such an obvious work around.

Oh well that's alright then 🙄 DO BETTER

I think they were asking whether the AI filter you do have in place has so far caught any CSA images and stopped them from being uploaded.

Why do you think it is being done ? How do you feel being silenced ? Are you as angry as you should be ?

Why do these Site Stuff threads not show in Trending? 🤔

Not really sure what you mean? Who is being silenced?

Yes I'm aware of that but whilst the sick bastards that post them know that there are no paid mods during the night then it will keep happening. Also why should it be let to volunteers to deal with it? If I was a member of the NW team, I'd be seriously considering giving it up now. Having to deal with all of that with (I suspect), very little training, no pay just left to it overnight, why would anyone want to do that job?

Oh please 🙄 this is happening because Mumsnet refuse to take any concrete steps to ensure they keep women safe.

Why are there still no paid night moderators?! Why were registrations open, why were images allowed to be posted, why were the preview images turned on?!

I expect to see this sort of reaction from 10 year olds, not adult women.
