No one asked for it, and if they did, this isn't what they want.

There isn't enough space in this box to explain how incredibly poor it is.

Hi all,
The reason we brought in infinite scroll was to address the long-standing issue we've had of 1000-post threads crashing. But clearly there are some other issues it causes that we need to work so we're going to roll it back now and do some more work on it. Many thanks for the input and apologies for any frustration this morning.

i can agree that when selecting the 1000 thread option it does at times start to slow, around 600+ but then it depends on the processing power of the devices being used etc

but using the show previous option that you wanted to introduce does defeat the option of selecting the number of posts in a thread to display

one or two of the main advantages of the see all, is you can save the thread on desktop via mht from opera. which is handy depending on if the thread gets pulled etc

Thank you for rolling it back but please don't "do more work on it". It's very clear users do not like or want or need this function. Fix the slow loading of lathe threads first, don't implement ridiculous features that do not enhance the user experience. Even limiting 500 posts would be better than this.

SerendipityJane · 22/11/2024 16:09

If you are going to tinker with the site, why not do something useful and stop it omitting the capital letter at the beginning of a new paragraph.

Before that, how about a secret "threaded replies" option ?

But my 1000 thread posts don’t crash because it’s 1000 posts. It’s usually due to adverts.

In doing this you are replicating the times that the threads do crash!!

Surely it's better to just solve the 1000 post threads crashing issue. Even 1000 posts isn't a spectacular amount of text, it shouldn't be causing issues that cause the site to crash. The problem is surely all the other crud that goes along with these long threads, mainly the adverts.

If that’s the point of it, I would rather have threads limited to 500 posts instead of having a clunky ‘feature’ like this implemented. Even without all the other issues it was causing, I can’t see why this would improve the overall user-experience when reading a longer thread. We already have bookmarks, we don’t need something that randomly takes us to parts of a thread we don’t necessarily want to be at and limits what can be seen. Simply scrolling up and down is fine, some things don’t need fixing or ‘improving’. Don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be.

I want 1000 posts. It works most of the time and when it doesn’t, it’s usually down to adverts. I make the choice to have 1000 posts. I would rather wait for it to load once that keep having to wait.

Yep, since I started paying for MN Premium (so basically no ads) I have no trouble at all with 1000 post threads!

DappledThings · 22/11/2024 10:05

I've done that too. Maybe it's not rolled out for all users yet?

I’m not seeing it yet either.

Please, please, please do not bring back this feature, @JustineMumsnet - it made using the site, and particularly reading long threads, irritating beyond belief.

Yes. A capital letter on a new paragraph shouldn’t be that hard.

They've set it back to normal now.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 22/11/2024 18:18

From reading on another thread it only seems to be people who have it set to see all 1000 posts, which I don’t.

SmalllChange · 22/11/2024 18:24

I've always had mine set to 1000 posts and never found it particularly slow loading.

I set it like that due to the ridiculous amount of thread deletions.

There's nothing worse than loading the next page, only to find the 'Deleted due to privacy concerns' message, when I could at least have read to the end.

Isatis · 24/11/2024 01:19

I liked this feature because I have mine set to see all posts on one page and, with longer threads, loading can be really slow. That problem seemed to be resolved,

I must say, I've never understood why having a lot of posts on a thread is apparently such a problem on MN when it isn't elsewhere.

Edited

It didn't resolve it without creating multiple other problems that didn't exist before.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/11/2024 09:52

I agree, @SoupDragon - for one thing, it made it really difficult to find either my last post, or the last post I'd previously read, on a thread.

Was there even any consultation before this was imposed on us?

WillowTit · 24/11/2024 09:54

does this cause people to post on old threads
can't help

oh no, this is Similar Threads, which is annoying imo
