Hating the "Load older posts" feature

No one asked for it, and if they did, this isn't what they want.

There isn't enough space in this box to explain how incredibly poor it is.

OP posts:

I do get the idea, long post take ages to load and often crash on me, so in theory this is useful.

But to echo a PP it’s absolutely broken the Next Post feature. When I click that it is mostly jumping back to the OP, and then when I scroll down it’s finally showing me the next post.

Good in theory but I think limiting it to about 50 posts or so is too little, or you need to let it gradually load newer posts, not not show the older posts.

Ginkypig · 21/11/2024 20:08

What the hell have you done!

it’s ruined being able to use threads.
it has stopped the bookmark feature working all together so on a long thread, which is a lot means you either decide you have time to read it all or not bother because who can be bothered to scroll through hundreds of posts looking for where you left it!

I hate it and won’t be using the site soon as it’s such a horrible user experience now.

and there are obvious bugs because at the exact time this has happened the op colour and my colour has changed with other problems on the threads exactly like the other thread running on site stuff is currently talking about.

What gets me is they can't even get a solid foundation of decent site building code yet fuck around with shit that no one asks for and makes the site worse. It's like they're intentionally trying to drive people away.

Perhaps that's the endgame.

BurgundyBear · 21/11/2024 21:18

Grecianrainbow · 21/11/2024 17:13

I hate it. Especially on my watched threads- it doesn’t go to the last post read anymore!

Same with threads on ‘I’m on’
This is a very bad feature indeed.

HarmonicAnalysis · 21/11/2024 21:41

I'm another who has the 'View full thread' option enabled, and this new 'feature' is really disconcerting - very hard to get a sense of where I am in the thread. I didn't realise until now how much I rely on the side scrollbar to judge how long the thread is and where I am up to. I seem to be looking more at the scrollbar, aghast and confused, than I am at the thread content! 😕

SmalllChange · 21/11/2024 21:47

I'm on a laptop and this is really annoying because when I click 'load older posts', it doesn't take me to the last one I bookmarked.

You'd think the 'load older posts' would start from the last bookmark, but it doesn't.

DollopOfFun · 21/11/2024 21:51

Aargh. I'm not one to moan about new features usually, but this stinks!

On iPad/iPhone Safari, it's not taking to me automatically to my bookmarked posts. The bookmark is still there, but I have to scroll down through the OP to get to it. And if I want to actually use the Load Older Posts thing ie to see my last post, it takes loads of clicks to actually get there.

Please rethink.

HeadJudgeShirley · 21/11/2024 21:53

I'm also unhappy. I thought it was broken. This is supposed to be like this?

Hope2025 · 21/11/2024 22:00

Hear, hear. PLEASE remove it. I want to see the whole thread on one page! Not keep tapping to load a few more posts!

ViciousCurrentBun · 21/11/2024 22:00

I thought in my dotage I must have inadvertently had fat fingers but no it’s just a shit new feature. I will not bother to load older posts as it’s a faff so my user minutes and hours will go down.

Remove it

SmalllChange · 21/11/2024 22:05

I wouldn't mind it if it started at my last bookmark.

But what's the point in bookmarking, if you have to load older posts and then go hunting for it?

Hope2025 · 21/11/2024 22:05

This is shit. Please get rid of it or let us opt out.

This!! Please let us switch it off!

ceecee32 · 21/11/2024 22:20

It's bloody awful.......click on Next to see OP next post and you are all over the place and then you need to click the back button a trillion times to get out of the thread...make it STOP

LouiseD1977 · 21/11/2024 22:26

I really hate it and have purposely avoided MN this evening as it’s practically unreadable.

I view 1,000 posts per thread on iPhone 13 iOS 17 via Safari. If I want to reply to a thread without scrolling through all posts, I used to just press the “Add Post” button at the end of my screen which would immediately take me to the bottom of the thread. With dynamic scrolling, this doesn’t work now. It’s very frustrating.

There are so many things MN could do to enhance the site (allow editing of quoted posts so only the relevant piece is quoted; allow users to be blocked/ignored etc) but it seems that focus is on new features that contribute nothing.

Hope2025 · 21/11/2024 22:27

It’s wild because I’ve been a heavy user here for nearly 16 years now and yet I have never seen a single request for this feature. Why have you done it!

Yes to all of this.

monkfruitmartini · 21/11/2024 22:47

This is not an improvement. I can't find/read anything on threads I'm on.

Further more, it will encourage even more posters who don't bother to read a single post beyond the OP, and certainly not the OP's further posts including updates, to wade in and plonk their pointless posts in.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 21/11/2024 22:47

Hate it so much, i genuinely thought you’d been hacked and came here to check!
it’s genuinely poorly thought out and (i hope) incredibly badly executed. The 4 threads i just clicked on had over 100 comments - when i clicked i saw one, which said something like “i agree”, and even when i clicked “show older posts” i only got a random selection, with no idea how many or what the selection criteria was. Just shit all over.

your usp is an interesting, informed community discussion. You’ve actively chosen to ditch that in favour of a view that shows 1 or 2 posts? Because we’re toddlers who need to have our treats withheld? I have it set to “view all” rather pages, and have no desire to have someone else limit what i can see or respond to.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 21/11/2024 22:56

Oh my god, it’s worse than i realised - you can’t get to the bottom of the christmas bargains thread to see the most recent (only relevant) posts because “add post” just bounces you back up to a random middle post again.

What “problem” did you think you were fixing when you implemented this brilliant idea?

ComfortandHappiness · 21/11/2024 23:19

I hate it as well. At least we should be able to choose it in settings.

SoupDragon · 21/11/2024 23:21

It has also removed the ability to use "find on page" on a thread unless all the posts have loaded. This used to be useful for finding a post you knew was somewhere in a thread.

greyedout · 21/11/2024 23:24

I don’t like it and it’s stopped bookmarks from working. And there’s the not being able to ‘find on page’ issue (which I often use on the bargain page for example).

AsTim3GoesBy · 21/11/2024 23:26

I too greatly dislike this new "feature". It feels like a big step backwards, to me. It makes threads harder to read and difficult to follow. When I click on "I'm on" I want to see what's been added since I last read it.

Exactly! Please remove this feature, it is beyond awful
