Hello everyone - please can you tell us what you think of Mumsnet Local?

JustineMumsnet · 23/04/2008 22:11

Do you use it? If you do - how do you find it? What works, what doesn't ? Is there anything (here we go, nice ham blah blah) you like us to add/ we could do to make it better?

Thanks,
MNHQ

ps if you haven't used it yet here are some tips on getting started

not nearly enough people or info in my area and is a bit personally revealing for me. Would prefer more anonymous info and some more input by someone compiling and researching local stuff... if there aren't locals around to do it and you're not in a big MNy city, you've no hope!

I think generic local listings/recommendations would be better; more anonymous, less interactive

Hecate · 23/04/2008 23:12

Keep forgetting it's there. Just went for a look. It's a bit quiet. Don't think I'd like to get active on it, seems a bit close to home. Would feel less anonymous, don't know why. - well, I suppose it's because I'd probably end up realising I know everyone [horror of horrors]

YouHaventSeenMe · 23/04/2008 23:13

I work a lot of hours at the moment, it takes me all my time to keep up with the main board.

If it is not performing, cut it loose.

paperchain · 23/04/2008 23:17

if you want local, use netmums, musmnet is for global stuff imo........

Mamazon · 23/04/2008 23:21

paperchain.

how can you mention such wierdness here?
have you ever been over there?

its full of counters and pictures of their kids all over the place...and everyone is called "hun"

ooh it sends shivers down my spine.

anyway - mumsnet local.

My only issue with it is that it always directs me to redhill, which is lovely but im not in redhill.

paperchain · 23/04/2008 23:22

p;msl Mamazon I am not in redhill either

theartfulsplodger · 23/04/2008 23:29

I posted my toddler group on there. I have been unable to make changes to my original listing and have ended up having to add more listings which make it look as if I am spamming. I have emailed mumsnet about this but had no response.

And it is very quiet. Agree that it needs to show up in active conv (maybe opting into that) and that anonymity would be compromised which for many on here including me is important.

But I do like the map feature and the fact you can just search for your area and find children-y stuff and adult-y stuff together, that things are not polarised.

mehdismummy · 23/04/2008 23:30

are you in london? My local site is pants! Nobody ever replies!

WanderingTrolley · 23/04/2008 23:37

Oh, I didn't know you could link to other sites.

I tried to join in once and for reasons beyond the reckoning my tiny leetle brian, God and Bill Gates, it decided I live in High Wycombe. That's when I gave up. There is a chance that my pc - it hates me - may have had something to do with this, however.

Linking to other areas especially useful to me, might do that if bastard pc lets me.

Flibbertyjibbet · 23/04/2008 23:38

I had a look at it a couple of times, listed a few things when you had comps to encourage us to do just that. But can't say I bother with it.

Now (don't all jump on me!!!) I registered with Netmums at the same time as mumnset. I never go on Netmums. But they email me quite regularly with local info and things going on for families/babies etc and we quite often take up the recommendations. Taking the ds's to a donkey sanctuary on Fri after an email from Netmums about it last week actually....

I like things to come to me - not for me to have to hunt about for stuff.

And agree with others that if you post and your local area can be seen then it might compromise the anonymity.

DiabloCody · 23/04/2008 23:39

to be honest for local stuff Netmums it is much much better... love mumsnet but it is lacking on the local department!

sushistar · 23/04/2008 23:44

it's dead. hardly any posts, i never check it.

Mamazon · 23/04/2008 23:44

Im just outside London, near Gatwick

Monkeybird · 23/04/2008 23:49

Is this your tiny little Brian, WT?

suwoo · 23/04/2008 23:51

Its a little bit plop.

WanderingTrolley · 23/04/2008 23:59

No, here he is Mb

Oh. Dear. God.

What is this netmums blasphemy?

They might be lots of them locally, but they'll all call you hun and demand you swap buggies and send you illiterate texts, you know. Better of here where you can insult converse freely with folk in cyberspace.

Flibbertyjibbet · 24/04/2008 00:10

Blasphemy???

I just said that I don't GO ON netmums, I just registered two years ago. But they are nice enough to email me very regularly with all sorts of interesting things going on in my area.

Cyberspace is fine but personally I like to get out and about - locally - in rl -sometimes, and netmums helps me to do that with minimum effort on my part.

ChocolateRockingHorse · 24/04/2008 00:22

I used it once to check some details on my OWN entry.. which I entered because I wanted to be a competition

elkiedee · 24/04/2008 00:43

We've managed to get a few meet ups going on my Local site, though there have been times when I felt I was talking to myself!

I've also found the netmumns meet a mum section useful, and the local info pages, though I don't like the main discussion forums and those ticker tapes and the whole site appearance hurt my eyes... bizarrely, they had a meet up in the same pub on the same day as 9 of us local MN people did - at one point there must have been 30 mums and babies there, and more through the afternoon (there were other mums and babies as well as the meet ups - don't know their connection).

elkiedee · 24/04/2008 00:46

Can you have more than one Local Tsarina? I don't want to tread on anyone's toes, but I live on the other side of the borough and a rather sharp east-west divide from my local Tsarina, and we have children of, I think, very different ages. It might bring a different perspective.
