Request for a board for those gaining a First class degree

Hi Mumsnet

Following on from the high earner's board request...

I’d like to propose a new message board dedicated to those of us who have achieved the elusive first-class degree. We need a place to gather and share our tales of academic glory and partake in intelligent conversation without having to wade through threads created by the undereducated.

But what if posters got their First from a shudder ex-polytechnic?

It really needs to be Oxbridge firsts only, Imperial by exception.

Clearly those are not ACTUAL firsts- ex-poly firsts are about the equivalent of a C grade at A Level surely?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/10/2024 20:32

...and a series of boards based on the number of 'O' levels achieved ( but not the grades - that would be silly).

How about a board for those of us with only the most beautiful children ?

Me! Me! And they're sporty & VERY clever (eldest on track for a first of his very own, by jove). But do I just not mention the youngest with ASN or I'll be chucked our?🫢

Bjorkdidit · 08/10/2024 20:34

I bet I've no chance as, whilst I got a First in a STEM subject in the days when hardly anyone got one, it's from an ex Poly and I only have one degree so I'm obviously a thicko by MN standards.

TheWhalrus · 08/10/2024 20:34

Sounds like we need one for the modest as well.

And they all go to the same competitive schools on scholarship - which means we must all know each other!!

Russell Group only.

Um those of us who went to Oxbridge don't want to mix with the proles, thanks.

Scottishday · 08/10/2024 20:36

It's a shame the other thread got deleted😂

Do you have to produce a certificate, or is it self-id?

Full transcripts to be provided, obviously, before the magic velvet rope is pulled aside for you.

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 08/10/2024 20:38

Bit of deja vu there. Thought I'd went back in time to the moldies 😂 simpler days 😆

Do cats count?

Only if they’re called Phil

Tel12 · 08/10/2024 20:42

Sorry, Oxbridge only

user2848502016 · 08/10/2024 20:45

I have a 1st and a PhD , I think I will need to set up my own board so I don't have to slum
it with people who only have answers undergraduate degree

Bjorkdidit · 08/10/2024 20:47

As a thicko, can I ask a question if I promise to go away quietly?

When people say they have 3 degrees, do they mean a normal degree, a masters and a PhD or something else?

Why wouldn't they just say they have a PhD as it goes without saying they also have the others, surely?

CheshireCats · 08/10/2024 20:48

Also need a thread for Southerners (no great unwashed people from further North)

TizerorFizz · 08/10/2024 20:48

@MeowCatPleaseMeowBack Oxbridge ARE RG. Obviously your brains are now frazzled.

Elusive first? Yes when around 1% got one. Now some courses are 40%! Not very elusive now.

I have 2 friends who did 2x BAs. Not really clear about exactly why they did that but the second was to qualify in our profession...but there is an MA. Maybe it was grade related actually

Bjorkdidit · 08/10/2024 20:50

There probably also needs to be a board for people with boiling water taps to give them a safe space away from those of us who don't see the point of paying £1000 to avoid having a kettle.

I have a BSc and two MScs. I would only ever say I have three degrees if someone specifically asked... they're all in different subjects so I'd usually just mention the most relevant one. If I were talking about a master's I wouldn't feel the need to mention the undergrad.

Yes but I don't want to mix with people who went to a non-Oxbridge RG university. They wouldn't be able to contribute anything that would stimulate me intellectually.

(For avoidance of doubt l, I am not serious and didn't go to Oxbridge)

mitogoshigg · 08/10/2024 20:52

But some courses give away so many 1sts these days, 1/3 or more, whereas most people got 2:2 or below when I was at university. Grade inflation Grin

I got a 2:1 at undergraduate and a first at post-grad, where do I go 😥

Out with the bins 😂

Craftycorvid · 08/10/2024 20:55

😂. Member of the ‘Geoff’ club, Russell Group, and obtained my degree a respectable 30 years ago - before they were handing them out for just turning up to freshers’ week.
