You don't have to quote the whole original post.

I have just opened a thread where the first reply quotes the whole of the lengthy OP. I can understand if you think you have to quote it to refer back to but come on, not when you're the first reply and really not ever, it is literally there at the top of each page. What is even more ridiculous is when it is quoted and the reply is one word or one sentence.

Yup - mobile site all the way. The app was rubbish when it started and nothing I’ve heard has encouraged me to look again.

EmilyGilmoreenergy · 25/06/2024 06:58

I find it more irritating (mildly) when someone quotes the lengthy original post of the OP further down the thread to say what 200 have already said hours before, and often when the OP has done updates.
Or even worse quote the OP days after the post started to say what 500 others have said and the OP never came back anyway.

BirthdayRainbow · 25/06/2024 07:41

I was not being sneery @SoupDragon . If you think so I can't help that. It is clearly a problem as others agree and there's been other threads!

This is actually doing my head in. I don't know why it irritates me so much but it does. There is no need to quote the original post, I think some people don't understand the idea of using the quote function. Is even worse when they quote a big huge post with the shortest reply. There has to be a way of removing the quote button from an original post .

BlanklyMyDear · 25/06/2024 09:13

That’s what was discussed with MNHQ in the previous thread I’ve linked above, @Wendysfriend. They do seem to be looking into it. IIRC there was consideration of collapsing any full quote of the OP, so we wouldn’t have to scroll endlessly.

I do sometimes think it’s done by newish posters who don’t have much understanding of or faith in the logical progression of an MN discussion. It’s as if they fear people might post other random issues on any specific thread.

Tbh I don't know why anyone bothers with the app. All I ever hear is how xyz doesn't work on the app. Seems like a waste of time.

Because using the desktop site is ridiculously slow. With multipe refreshes to load the ads, no doubt.

What they need to do is bring the android app up to standard.

Also, if you have the app downloaded on your phone, you can't access the desktop site unless you use incognito mode, and sign in every time.

Fuck knows why anyone gives this place any traffic at all, tbh.

What is more annoying is someone just quoting a name and posting something inane like 'I agree', and you have to scroll back to see what it was, if you were so inclined. THAT should be bloody stopped.

Can we also have it forced upon people, when they ask AIBU, to actually use the function?! The amount of people that ask in a post but don't use the AIBU voting thing astounds me! I'm also with you OP, the full quote repost drives me mad!

You can't use it in the app. Or see any polls. And you can't only quote a bit of a post. The app is rather shit really, but easier than using desktop so I stick with it.

TinkerTiger · 25/06/2024 09:29

ElizabethVonArnim · 24/06/2024 19:14

It's the bloody mobile app. No idea why it doesn't let you click into the quote and edit it.

You can, obviously, just copy and paste, but then you don't get the quotation marks. The app shouldn't give you an option that just makes the thread rubbish.

The app being shit has been an ongoing issue and MN always just have a 'we're working on it' generic reply. I don't think they have any intentions of changing the app.

But people can just copy and paste what they're referring to and make it bold or put in quotations themselves, there's no rule against it

It's not an option when using the app. I use the app 97% of the time as it's much clearer to read and easier to use than the mobile site on my phone. We've been asking MN for an improved app for years.

Oh. The desktop site is fine on my phone.

BlanklyMyDear · 25/06/2024 09:39

Can some of you really not access the mobile site? (Not the app, not the desktop.)

I access MN exclusively on my phone - and the mobile site plus an add blocker means I never encounter most of the problems some posters do. 1000 posts all on one page, different colours for my posts and for the OP’s posts. Newest post at the bottom but eager new phone races straight to my bookmark on any thread. Easy to C&P and to insert links or photos, or make a swift edit.

(Not smug, rest of life is currently crap, but MN works beautifully for me at the moment. Grin)

Can you post a screenshot of what this looks like?

BlanklyMyDear · 25/06/2024 09:53

Sure. Photos of top, middle and end of this thread on my iPhone. You may need to tap each photo to see it whole.

You don't have to quote the whole original post.

BlanklyMyDear · 25/06/2024 09:55

(And no, I’m not on the Premium site! And I could have used a hyperlink for MN yesterday but didn’t bother.)

TikiTikiBoo · 25/06/2024 09:56

That's what mine looks like, what I thought was the desktop site. It's still slow with loading and refreshing pages.

BlanklyMyDear · 25/06/2024 10:02

Desktop site is for laptop, no? Unless something catastrophic has happened to my phone I never use MN on my laptop because it’s hugely cumbersome and annoying. About a billion extraneous things on the screen including weird intrusive pop-ups from MN offering me services I positively do not want.

Davros · 25/06/2024 10:02

I totally agree, it's infuriating

Sillystrumpet · 25/06/2024 10:05

On one of these threads someone posted they do it repeatedly as they know it annoys people. Others agreed.

I think in the overwhelming majority of cases they know it annoys people, so it drives them to do it.

DexaVooveQhodu · 25/06/2024 10:07

mathanxiety · 24/06/2024 22:02

I do this when I'm on the app.

The wonky version of the app that is on my phone doesn't allow me to leave the posting box without losing everything I post.

So if I want to refer to a few details, what am I supposed to do - screenshot it first, train myself to have a photographic memory, take down the OP in longhand?

That's interesting.
Do you have the "clear quote" button in the app that would let you delete the quoted OP after referring to it?

In the other thread about this, someone made the excellent suggestion that quoted OPs could simply be "collapsed" like quotes-within-quotes are, so that anyone who actually wants to read the OP for a 5th time can do so but everyone else can ignore.

But it sounds like this is yet another effect of how utterly crap and unfit for purpose the App is. I have never been tempted to use it.

You don't have to quote the whole original post.
SheilaFentiman · 25/06/2024 10:10

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 24/06/2024 19:14

Just copy and paste the bit you want. That's what we always did when it was just fields around here.

The trouble with that is that some posters then assume the bolded sentence or two that you are trying to quote (and probably disagree with) is your opinion!

Editable quoting would help.

This is often the “fault” of trending or FB appearances, which show a post two days after the OP date. Sometimes when the OP is asking a time sensitive question like “should I go on this date tonight or are there red flags?”

Fishcake15 · 25/06/2024 10:16

What's ridiculous is someone being this passionate about etiquette on Mumsnet 😂. Maybe leave the internet alone for a bit if you're stressed out by something so petty.

BlanklyMyDear · 25/06/2024 10:27

Perhaps, @Fishcake15, you drop in to MN for ten minutes every other week and then go back to a lovely real life? Other MN users might be ill or housebound or lonely or poor. Or they may desperately need support or advice. Or have no confidence in getting dressed or attending a meeting or party or making friends with school gate parents. So they may spend more time here, or need a site that offers what they want with ease and clarity. For all those people, a shared understanding of how the site works best can actually add or take away from their day.

Summertimer · 25/06/2024 10:30

But you can if you want to and these threads about quotes are so boring 😑
