Jewish Mumsnetter Section

Asthebellcurves · 14/10/2023 14:43

I was asked by Mumsnet to start a post here to request a Jewish Mumsnetter section. This request comes out of a thread where Jewish people were discussing ethnic and religious identities that was then co-opted by others refusing to provide space for those conversations. Thus illustrating the need for a distinct Jewish space on here. Of course, Jewish conversation and contribution is valuable across mumsnet, but a neat space for Jewish perspectives to be protected and valued is a great addition - just as Black, South Asian, Welsh, Irish and Scottish mumsnetters have and benefit from.

”When it comes to starting new boards, we're pretty much guided by what our users want. The Black Mumsnetters, SE Asian MNers, Craicnet, etc came about because users started threads requesting their own space. We'll certainly give consideration to a Jewish Mumsnetters section if there is demand. You're quite welcome to start a thread in Site Stuff to ask if others feel the same.”

I know many of us have felt very hurt by the moderation of Mumsnet this week, as anti semitic posters have been allowed to run wild while many factual comments that are supportive of the Jewish community have been deleted. I hope this may serve as an opportunity for Mumsnet to build much needed bridges.

I would also add I'm a terrible Jew - not even 'lapsed' but have never actually practised and do not know nearly enough as I should about Judaism! So I think this space could be somewhere for me to learn too!

yoghurtknitter · 14/10/2023 16:04

Fully support this

MimPimMim · 14/10/2023 16:05

Also fully support this. I am horrified by the antisemitism that I have seen on here - and elsewhere - over the last week. It’s shameful and upsetting. Sending love and support x

What a lot of lovely people on this thread. I have to say, it's never occurred to me to go on Craicnet or Scotsnet - just seems totally obvious to me that it's not my place and I have nothing of value to add there. The only time I can imagine going there would be to ask specific advice. Ask, not tell!

It's funny how for certain people (not the ones on this thread), the opposite applies when it comes to the Black MNetters or potential Jewish MNetters board - no respect for it being a space that's not for them, no sense that they might not be welcome or that their opinion is not being asked for, because they don't have anything worth bringing to the discussion.

It makes me think of the certain type of men who can't stand to see women sharing our thoughts without coming to trample all over us with their manly opinions.

etmoietmoietmoi · 14/10/2023 16:07

@EasternStandard Yes, please do! Your support over the last week has not gone unnoticed by me.

madamsapple · 14/10/2023 16:09

fully support this idea

saythatagaintome · 14/10/2023 16:10

Fully support.

Given that we're both posting on Shabbos, I can tell you that we're both pretty terrible Jews according to some 😉

sunshinesupermum · 14/10/2023 16:11

Thank you!

etmoietmoietmoi · 14/10/2023 16:12

@BlurredEdges I'm even worse than you because that never even occurred to me! 😂

notimagain · 14/10/2023 16:13

Fully in support.

theDudesmummy · 14/10/2023 16:13

I am not Jewish but support this, and I was surprised to learn that there is not already a Jewish MNetters space.

I’m not Jewish but support you and your need for a safe space 1000%

Same!

Just want to add that the AMA with the Orthodox Jew remains one of my favourite threads ever - not only was it so informative but it was really beautiful to see how respectful everyone was no matter what tradition they came from. (With the exception of that one poster!) If only all threads with people from different backgrounds could be as respectful and honouring to those we disagree with. It’s not the reality though and that’s why I think separate areas on mumsnet are a necessity. I hope it’s set up swiftly and I hope it is respected and can be a genuine safe space for Jewish members to speak freely and openly.

(but I do take umbrage with @Tessisme suggesting that traybakes are not a sensitive and significant point of discussion - life or death for this Nordie Prod Wink)

All of this.

I also really appreciated that AMA thread, I learned so much from it and @jewishorthomum was so lovely and gracious throughout.

An aside but as a Scot I got far too invested in the traybakes thread and the amazing recipes that were shared.

Robinni · 14/10/2023 16:22

Support this full heartedly.

R3V3NG3 · 14/10/2023 16:22

Not Jewish but support this idea

thehonscupboard · 14/10/2023 16:22

Not Jewish myself but support this. I'm so sorry for the necessarily of it. I hope it becomes a positive space for Jewish women.

LaBaDeeLaBaDa · 14/10/2023 16:23

Also not Jewish, also very much support a Jewish board. This past week on MN has been profoundly depressing in parts, it's on occasion felt more like Reddit. That said I've really appreciated some of the thoughtful, informed, sensitive and eye-opening (and often displaying a patience I would struggle to possess) posts I've read from Jewish MNers in response.

LesbianNan · 14/10/2023 16:23

I support this request also. Good wishes and blessings.

PoopMaster · 14/10/2023 16:23

Also support this (not Jewish)

WillyWonkaBlues · 14/10/2023 16:24

I’m in full support!

nocoolnamesleft · 14/10/2023 16:25

I'm not Jewish, but wanted to support this request.

Justletpeopleenjoythings · 14/10/2023 16:28

Not Jewish but wholeheartedly support this.

Petrine · 14/10/2023 16:30

Yes, this would be welcome

alpinia · 14/10/2023 16:33

Fully support this suggestion. The last week Mumsnet has been difficult reading at times.
