Jewish Mumsnetter Section

Asthebellcurves · 14/10/2023 14:43

I was asked by Mumsnet to start a post here to request a Jewish Mumsnetter section. This request comes out of a thread where Jewish people were discussing ethnic and religious identities that was then co-opted by others refusing to provide space for those conversations. Thus illustrating the need for a distinct Jewish space on here. Of course, Jewish conversation and contribution is valuable across mumsnet, but a neat space for Jewish perspectives to be protected and valued is a great addition - just as Black, South Asian, Welsh, Irish and Scottish mumsnetters have and benefit from.

”When it comes to starting new boards, we're pretty much guided by what our users want. The Black Mumsnetters, SE Asian MNers, Craicnet, etc came about because users started threads requesting their own space. We'll certainly give consideration to a Jewish Mumsnetters section if there is demand. You're quite welcome to start a thread in Site Stuff to ask if others feel the same.”

I know many of us have felt very hurt by the moderation of Mumsnet this week, as anti semitic posters have been allowed to run wild while many factual comments that are supportive of the Jewish community have been deleted. I hope this may serve as an opportunity for Mumsnet to build much needed bridges.

SouperWoman · 15/10/2023 11:50

It’s been a dark week for Jews. Please @BeckyAMumsnet please can we have a Jewish MN board

Can I ask - this thread is hidden from 'active' now isn't it?

No it's still in Active @etmoietmoietmoi, about half way down the page

etmoietmoietmoi · 15/10/2023 11:55

@WaveyGodshawk Ah OK, thanks. I didn't see it.

Samcro · 15/10/2023 12:08

279 posts. there is obviously a lot of people who want and will use this topic. can't understand why mn hq have not done it.

When I was growing up in the 60s and70s I remember my DF whispering the word Jew or Jewish if he out of the house. It was ingrained in him that you have to hide the fact that you were Jewish. He was advised to put his faith as CofE on his call up papers in WW2 as Jews were given such terrible treatment.

He was amazed when my DC openly wore a magen David pendant when they were growing up and were open about being Jewish. Over the last 10 years they no longer have any visible signs of their heritage out of fear. My DGC have at the ages of 6 been on the receiving end of antisemitism at school. This was before last week. We are back to my DFs constant awareness of not drawing attention to any sign that you’re Jewish.

SnakeyS · 15/10/2023 12:11

I support this too

I would also like to add my support for this. I too have been shocked by the uncovering of so much antisemitism.

CherryRipe1 · 15/10/2023 12:32

Disgusting anti-Semitism. Count me in.

SingingSands · 15/10/2023 12:32

Sure, I'd support this.

Is this already sufficient evidence on this thread of a demand for a Jewish Mumsnetters section; is there a threshold for the number of requests for it as this is not clear in the above? Presume that the costs of admin etc are not excessive. I don't know why it shouldn't be arranged now.

12 pages of full support from both Jewish and non-jewish posters, with a few posts expressing sadness that such a thing is necessary - what more do you need @BeckyAMumsnet ?

HoldOnMiGenna · 15/10/2023 12:43

I'm Black , not Jewish, have no close Jewish friends and I fully endorse Mumsnet providing a Jewish section with as much protection and swift deletion of anti Semitic or goady posts as requested by Jewish people in any thread as it would do for groups who are deemed politically correct to support vis a vis the general liberal purview on Mumsnet.

This should have been a thing even pre Corbyn, but definitely with his over promotion as Labour leader where one would have to certainly be biased if they couldn't recognise that a mask held by the cheapest of strings had been allowed to completely drop and from so many quarters.
The problem with online anti Semitism is that one has to be very naive to think that it comes from one quarter more than another.
That on and offline is what makes anti Semetism unique, as quiet as other minority groups may want that kept.

LoudSnoringDog · 15/10/2023 12:44

Complete support for this ❤

Maireas · 15/10/2023 12:46

Please listen to Jewish voices on here, @BeckyAMumsnet , and those of us who are not Jewish, but are shocked and saddened by bigoted responses to recent events. We can't allow hate to stand.

fearfuloffluff · 15/10/2023 12:46

Is there a risk that would just be a draw for antisemites etc and therefore cause more distress?

Not that that is a reason not to have one, but maybe right now when feelings are running high, it might be impossible to make it a safe space.

etmoietmoietmoi · 15/10/2023 12:50

@fearfuloffluff I think the risk is always going to be there for sure, BUT it will feel safer knowing it's a specifically supportive space, we'll feel less 'alone', which is how I feel on the current thread about yesterday's protest, which I really wish I hadn't joined now.

Dibblydoodahdah · 15/10/2023 12:52

I’m not Jewish but I am 100% behind this. I have been horrified by some of the antisemetic comments on Mumsnet this week. Jewish posters really need a safe space.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 15/10/2023 12:53

Not jewish but I fully support this

Not Jewish but want to offer support and recognise that this is important and space should be provided for you

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 15/10/2023 13:00

I really hope mumnset takes this into consideration (and acts).

I also hope they go over their guidelines and moderation. The amount of antisemitism that was allowed to stay up (or the time it took to remove it)...
