Quote feature is in a horrible place now

Any chance we can have the quote feature somewhere better than it is?

you now have to click the 3 dots > then quote > then it drops down to the bottom and sometimes loses the quote entirely > then there is still a grey box over the text box so you have to click off it to type

really clunky this way, can it be moved somewhere easier?

Me too, it still doesn’t make sense!

Hi OP

Just to let you know, we've seen this and will have a chat about your feedback.

@LilyMumsnet @HebeMumsnet Please could we have an update on this. It's been almost a month since the OP started the thread.

HebeMumsnet · 02/10/2023 10:05

Morning, everyone. We're afraid we don't have much of an update on this yet. We are looking at improving the consistency across the buttons but it is a little bit more complex than one might think and we need to decide exactly how we're going to go about it before wading in. Rest assured, it is being looked at though and as soon as there is an update on how and when it will happen, we'll post and let you know.

Whinge · 02/10/2023 10:10

@HebeMumsnet If moving the quote button is going to be too complex then please can you at least remove the reply button as that seem to be causing a lot of problems.

Yes, this. The whole point is that Reply is pointless. So just take it away! The issue with where Quote appears is secondary.

You could solve all the hundreds of posts a day that think they are replies but aren't just by taking away the Reply button.

Can we please get this sorted, I've seen three threads this morning where someone has had to explain to the OP to use quote instead of reply.

It's a user interface change, it's surely about 10 minutes work to swap the position of the two options

Honestly I've given up on trying to explain to people that reply doesn't actually reply to the post but just add a message to the thread. I could spend all day doing it and still people would be understandably confused.

I still don't understand the reluctance to make such a simple change other than MNHQ don't use the site so genuinely don't care.

I don't understand how it came to be in the first place. I imagine the conversation in MNHQ:
"Shall we have a reply button"
"Good plan"
"Cool. So that will create a reply to that post then?"
"No. We'll call it Reply but it won't actually be that function"
"I see no issues with that. Let's go to lunch."

Whinge · 14/10/2023 13:51

I don't understand how it came to be in the first place.

It's even more baffling when you take into account the fact the web / desktop version of the site has an add message button, rather than reply. So not only is a reply button illogical, they've actively made the decision to change the wording from add message to make it even more confusing. Confused

I think they often roll stuff out, people complain, they say they’ll take it away to think about then it gets lost in the ether until we all forget about it 😆
