Quote feature is in a horrible place now

Any chance we can have the quote feature somewhere better than it is?

you now have to click the 3 dots > then quote > then it drops down to the bottom and sometimes loses the quote entirely > then there is still a grey box over the text box so you have to click off it to type

really clunky this way, can it be moved somewhere easier?

Coz it means @EarringsandLipstick I can't reply to your message above

As you have quoted me

DappledThings · 23/09/2023 09:36

This is the third thread I've been on now (one that I started) explaining that Reply is shit and doesn't actually reply at all. It creates threads full of nonsense where people think they have replied and haven't.

Never seen a response from MN about this and addressing wht they won't just remove the Reply button altogether when it is not only useless but actively makes threads harder to follow.

I've seen a few too, I probably even posted on yours at the time but thought I'd be kind and give HQ time to assess and fix the issue. However it seems they have no interest making any changes and as you've said the problem seems to be getting worse. Genuinely getting so fed up of reading threads where the OP or other posters are clearly responding to a post but have hit reply and therefore the whole thread is just pages of nonsense because the replies have none of the context.

EarringsandLipstick · 23/09/2023 09:42

@Blondeshavemorefun

Exactly!

You do what I did here - @ the poster or copy & paste the relevant text.

Endless quotes-of-quotes are really annoying. Tho MN could sort it if they allowed editable quoting.

Whinge · 23/09/2023 09:45

I saw a post the other day that said

"reply doesn't seem to be working"

And all I could think was reply is working, it just doesn't do what you think it does.

It's a pointless feature and I wish MNHQ would remove it.

This about sums it up and it's probably irrational of me but the fact they named the button reply feels very much like a deliberate attempt to confuse people. It might have been ok before they introduced the quote feature but now we have it no wonder people think that's what will happen if they click reply.

Agreed, the reply button makes you think you're replying to the message then you realise it's just a normal post. Swap reply out for quote please!

Just came on here to say this! The reply button doesn’t work properly

Again though reply does work properly, it just doesn't do what you (or most of MN) think it should do. It replies to the thread, where as posters expect it to reply to specific posts.

With quote and edit hidden behind the 3 dots I suspect there's a significant number of MNers who have no idea these features exist.

EarringsandLipstick · 23/09/2023 11:26

replies to the thread, where as posters expect it to reply to specific posts.

I only use the desktop / web version occasionally but have never been confused about what 'reply' does.

I do agree the overall design & pointless features MN bring in, do cause confusion. It's why I prefer the app with way fewer options!

The trouble is for every one person like you who isn't confused there's another 9 who are and before quote became a feature it was understandable that it would just add a message but naturally now many people, quite understandably, think it responds to that individual post.

It's making a heck of a lot of threads unreadable because the replies make no sense without the messages the poster thinks they are replying too.

EarringsandLipstick · 23/09/2023 12:59

That's true @YourNameGoesHere

ClaraBourne · 23/09/2023 13:34

Could you also add a feature where people are not allowed to quote the whole OP?
That is really irritating.

BertieBotts · 26/09/2023 13:51

If not a full quote, perhaps "Reply" could automatically add a tag to that poster?

That would be a nice compromise if they're determined to continue to keep reply. Although I'm not at all sure why they've not changed it to quote already, literally cannot see any good reason not to and would love to know their logic.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/09/2023 20:23

it's irritating and making the site unuseable

DappledThings · 26/09/2023 20:25

@HebeMumsnet any chance of further engagement on here? Or any of the other threads on this board asking the same thing?

What is the point of Reply?
Do you agree it is hugely misleading and creates threads full of "replies" that aren't actually replies making them incomprehensible?
Are you wedded to keeping "Reply" and if so why when it's pointless and causing confusion?
Please could it just be removed or changed to actually do something like at least @ the PP and timestamp it so it says something like "Reply to DappledThings 26/09/23 20.24" so others posters cab refer back?

Please!

It really does. Honestly not a day goes by where I don't see reply being used and making the thread incomprehensible.

I'm disappointed to see they have not commented since they said they would discuss it over 2 weeks ago. I honestly don't get the reluctance to amend the reply button or simply swap it out for a quote button.

I'm guessing they are just hoping that the radio silence means people will stop asking.

I assume so. It was 23rd September 2022 when I had a reply to my thread about this saying, "We'll chat about this - thanks so much for flagging".

Not sure how much chat there needs to be that takes a year and a week to respond!

BertieBotts · 27/09/2023 23:09

I've noticed that they have swiftly returned it to the "Add Message" wording Grin

Which is now causing people to start what they think are new threads in the middle of another thread, but never mind. It is slightly better than people thinking they are replying and making a thread impossible to read.

Edited

It's still labelled as reply for me using the web version on my phone.

I think the name depends on what device you're using as I'm sure when I use a computer it shows as add message although I'm not 100% as I'm normally on my phone.

Either way both reply and add message are misleading names and I still don't understand why it can't just be a quote option which would cause no confusion at all.

YourNameGoesHere · 30/09/2023 08:41

Another hopeless bump to this thread. I've been on less than 10 threads this morning and 3 of them have the OP clearly using reply thinking it means quote.

Any update at all on plans to change this please MNHQ it's getting beyond tiresome!
