Quote feature is in a horrible place now

Any chance we can have the quote feature somewhere better than it is?

you now have to click the 3 dots > then quote > then it drops down to the bottom and sometimes loses the quote entirely > then there is still a grey box over the text box so you have to click off it to type

really clunky this way, can it be moved somewhere easier?

I actually use 'save' not sure if it is any use but it feels as if it is.
Bookmark is essential
Reply is of no use.
Quote is invaluable, in the right place.

Edited

It seems to be that Save and Bookmark do more or less the same thing.

Reply does nothing.
Quote is the most use but it's not on the bar for some reason.
Weird.

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 13/09/2023 12:34

Losing Reply might also encourage posters to at least scroll to the bottom of the page even if they can’t be bothered to RTFT.

Agreed, the reply button makes you think you're replying to the message then you realise it's just a normal post. Swap reply out for quote please!

Same!

I didn't actually notice the wording change and thought the Quote button just wasn't working.

BarrelOfOtters · 14/09/2023 08:30

Just trying out add message

continentallentil · 14/09/2023 08:32

Haven’t MN done this deliberately to reduce quoting though? I don’t think it’s by accident.

Why would they want to reduce quoting? Honestly why introduce the feature only to then restrict its use. I seriously don't understand why after finally joining the 21st century and adding such features the quote option and edit options have been hidden away like some sort of dirty secret.

TeenDivided · 14/09/2023 08:37

I don't even know what the 'Share' button is for so I'd move that and possibly also 'save' to bring Quote' back to the main body.

PurpleMonkeys · 15/09/2023 14:52

Interestingly I just bookmarked a post and have no clue and can't find how to see what I've bookmarked so I'm wondering, Bookmark.. what is the point of it?

ThreeBearsPorridge · 15/09/2023 21:38

I thought quite had been removed altogether actually. It’s news to me that you click on the three dots. So annoying .

Next time you click on that thread, it'll take you straight to the post you bookmarked 🙂

Oh I see.
I just tested it and instead of going to first unread post it goes to the post you bookmarked.
I suppose if there's a very useful reply you might want to go back to the it's useful in that scenario.

It's a bit shit though because you need to find the post to then find your bookmark. So unless you have also saved the post you'd need to remember which section the post was in and scroll through until you found it. Or remember the name of the thread / poster and use search.

Bookmark is most helpful alone on a long thread if you want to scroll back up and then jump back to where you were.

+1

BertieBotts · 16/09/2023 08:28

100% agree about "reply" being confusing and causing people to assume they will be adding a quote. I've done this too and I've been here ages.

Agree that add message and reply are both totally redundant - replace them with the quote button. People can scroll down to the bottom if they want to reply without quoting. Which would also encourage people to RTFT...

And why do you need a share button on every single comment? Report could also be hidden in the 3 dots menu. It's so cluttered with too many buttons at the moment.

BertieBotts · 16/09/2023 08:30

Does MN remember your last read post without bookmarking? It never used to - that's what the bookmark feature was brought in to do.

It's no use for saving useful posts because as soon as you post a comment yourself, it resets your bookmark to that comment.

PurpleMonkeys · 16/09/2023 08:48

Does MN remember your last read post without bookmarking?

I think so.

Say I reply in a thread in Chat called "Name something blue" and go to bed.
At breakfast I'll look at my phone and Tap 'I'm on'
The thread in Chat "Name Something Blue" has 35 replies, I can see the last two.

If I tap the title of the thread, it takes me to my last read reply.
If I tap one of the replies I can see, it takes me to those replies.

It also seems to work if I dont reply. If I open the link, read a few posts and then close it. If I see the same thread in active and rap again it takes.me to where I got too.

I hope all that makes some sense. 🤣

BertieBotts · 16/09/2023 08:52

Ah is it an app thing? I only use the mobile/desktop site.

PurpleMonkeys · 16/09/2023 09:20

I use mobile browser Chrome.
I tried the app, but it seemed far more clunky at the time.

YourNameGoesHere · 23/09/2023 07:12

Just bumping this again to see if MNHQ had got round to discussing this yet because it's driving me completely bonkers the amount of posters who think that hitting reply means they are responding to a specific post and making threads almost fucking impossible to follow.

Please for the love of logic I'm begging you just replace reply with quote !

TeenDivided · 23/09/2023 07:17

There is no way that Save, Share and Bookmark are all more important/useful than Quote.

EarringsandLipstick · 23/09/2023 07:27

I use the app, and while functionality is limited, it's far more straightforward than the web version.

I particularly like that on the app you can't quote already quoted posts (so you can only quote once). It drives me mad, posters quoting endlessly and then having a long post of nested quotes.

The Save, Share & Reply options are also not available. I feel on the web version, MNHQ are testing out features they plan to use in the future, but aren't sure how. (For example, giving thanks seems to be to be a possible prelude to the dreaded 'like' option).

I think it's frustrating how few posters tag others correctly or use the c&p option to select the pertinent point they are replying to.

I can't understand all the confusion about bookmarking. You bookmark to the point you've read. The next time you open that thread you'll be taken to the last point you finished reading, then you can read the newer posts. What else would it do?! (The idea that it's to mark particularly important posts (what?) is just odd.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/09/2023 08:12

I wish I could quote a quote on the app

Annoying as mainly use app but then can't reply easily .....

One quote is fine.

Repeatedly quoting quoted posts is so annoying - there's a long list of quotes, most of which becomes irrelevant.

On the app, this isn't even shown so if someone quotes quotes, it only shows the original quote, so makes even less sense!

I will never understand why MN keep introducing new elements on the desktop version that are unavailable on the app (and I gather the Android version is worse).
