Why won’t MNet take seriously other sites trolling here?

Welllookiehere · 01/01/2023 02:39

Tattle users are openly bragging about trolling this site, including confessing to being behind one long standing, very identifiable thread on here. When reported MN say they don’t look at other sites. Meanwhile photographs are taken from another thread on here daily for ridicule over there, whilst the people on the thread here keep posting unaware their images are being used to poke fun at.

Mumsnet has become sport for Tattle users to troll. Surely it’s in the interest of this to look at other sites and protect the users here? There will always be trolls as long as there is an internet, but when someone on another site is actively telling you they are behind things surely you have a duty to take that seriously?

We don't 'call them out' we report them. And they get blocked

Unless they're driving traffic to the site or make the Daily Mail, whence they're allowed to run into several threads.

nc824 · 01/01/2023 09:58

They don't always. The begging threads are awful, they are allowed to run for ages, no doubt raking it in on PMs.

Certain very well known troll posters were allowed to post for years because the site was reliant on them. Despite being reported very frequently.

ShutTheFrontDory · 01/01/2023 10:01

I mean if people didn't post such trivial, pathetic gripes then there wouldn't be anything that could be trolled over. But sometimes the posts on here are laughable. You can't police an external site. Just like how on here we discuss stuff from other sites, including Tattler.

Polkadotties · 01/01/2023 10:02

You are also extremely naive if you think images only stay on the site they are posted to

ApolloandDaphne · 01/01/2023 10:05

It's best not to take posts on here too seriously. Especially the AIBU inflammatory type ones. It's an open forum which will attract all sorts. MNHQ cannot be patrolling this constantly. Report any you think are trolling and accept threads you are posting on might be nonsense. I scroll on past loads of threads I suspect are nonsense.

pinneddownbytabbies · 01/01/2023 10:07

Just because they confess to being a troll who started a particular thread, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are telling the truth.

I take everything on t'internet with a pinch of salt, and after a two-minute look at Tattle a couple of years ago I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, so anything they say about me on there will go cheerfully unread.

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:07

Blimey...are people really SO invested in mumsnet?

Time to get a life off the internet perhaps? Couldn't care less if Tattle off to Reddit troll

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:08

*or Reddit

RudsyFarmer · 01/01/2023 10:11

Trolls gonna troll.

gamerchick · 01/01/2023 10:12

Welllookiehere · 01/01/2023 03:28

Never nasty? That particular thread is ridiculing a posters clothing, home and even dog. It’s actually beyond nasty.

As for ‘it’s not trolling’….

“My sister and I post daft threads all the time on MN ...a fair few have made the 'daily fail'...we both have one each going at the moment (name changed of course:cool:) we are getting loads of helpful suggestions👨‍👦⛄:ROFLMAO::LOL:”

Isn't that a bit pathetic though? Like on SM posting stuff just for as many likes as possible and whatnot? It shows them up more than anything as being a bit crap at life if that's what it's reduced them to doing for sport.

You can't let yourself get het up.

AChristmasCaro · 01/01/2023 10:13

Surely just a lesson not to believe everything you read on here or post anything you’re not happy to have shared with millions.

saraclara · 01/01/2023 10:16

MN wants threads here to spread to other forums and to the Mail etc. It drives traffic here. People read those posts on Tattle, or read about a thread on the Mail and then come over here to see what it's about.

Of course they're not going to warn people, or attempt to end the cross pollination. It's not in their interests, and in fact they WANT it to happen. There's probably a member of staff who's job it is to encourage it to happen.

MN threads have also started to appear on my FB feed. Now that's a deliberate act by mumsnet.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 01/01/2023 10:20

IrmaGord · 01/01/2023 09:57

Unless they're driving traffic to the site or make the Daily Mail, whence they're allowed to run into several threads.

And that is a business decision taken by those who own this site.

We are all aware of it. We can all work out why that is the decision that has been made.

We all have choices.

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:26

Op mumsnet haven't got the resources to delete posts constantly

Don't post details if you don't want others picking up on them

AChristmasCaro · 01/01/2023 10:13

This.

And to add to that, let’s not forget that MN employed someone who doxxed women posting on the feminism boards. So be wary of what you read and what you post, and make sure the email address you’ve signed up with can’t identify you IRL.

FictionalCharacter · 01/01/2023 10:35

I agree @Welllookiehere . I don't think we should have to just accept it.

pinneddownbytabbies · 01/01/2023 10:39

Welllookiehere · 01/01/2023 03:19

Trolling aside, I guess what I am saying is, when MNet become aware that a thread has been picked up, either for ridicule on another site or by newspapers etc, why can they not post a warning on those threads that this has happened.
That would then give the Posters to those threads the choice whether to share further or not and to possibly request their posts/images removal.

Yes, but it doesn't have to be MNHQ that does that. Anyone could post on the thread and say 'look folks, sorry to have to tell you, but...'

You could do it yourself.

nc824 · 01/01/2023 10:40

You could do it yourself

Well no we're not supposed to "troll hunt" so you have to report and wait for them to pick up and see what they decide.

IET · 01/01/2023 10:43

I think it's a public forum and isn't heavily moderated, so there are risks associated with that.

I've been on one of the sites criticising MN threads and it generally seems to be people wanting to point out obvious trolls which they can't on here as it's against talk guidelines.

I do get a bit confused by HQ's approach, as they are generally hands off....until they aren't. Also, on other sites with hands off moderation, you are usually able to block persistently unpleasant posters. For some reason @mnhq repeatedly refuse to make this feature available on here and it makes the site so much worse. Iirc they initially said it wasn't possible from a. Tech perspective 🤣. Of course it is. I've now just hidden the vast majority of talk topics, as the trolls, MRAs and their kind have ruined a lot of the topics.

A warning would be nice and as you say, HQ will "pop on the thread" to stop bunfights, troll hunting etc. But since they refuse to help, there is your answer and it's even more reason to post with a level of caution on here.

IDontCareMatthew · 01/01/2023 10:48

Just been for a nose on Tattle... it looks interesting, exposing some influencers for lying...about bloody time!!

Littlechickenhead · 01/01/2023 11:16

Posters on here need to get their heads around the fact it’s a public forum and nothing they post is confidential. Prefacing your post with arrant nonsense that you don’t give permission for the content to be used elsewhere or ‘fuck off Daily Mail’ just expose themselves as being almost too thick to use the internet.

The reason the Tattle threads and Reddit posts exist is precisely because MN is full of bullshit and perv threads yet troll hunting is banned so despite reporting them, they just carry on with the halfwits begging for updates.

pinneddownbytabbies · 01/01/2023 11:19

nc824 · 01/01/2023 10:40

It's not troll hunting, it is simply telling people on a thread that their posts have been picked up and are being shared elsewhere on the internet.

Troll hunting is accusing someone on the actual MN thread of being a troll.

nc824 · 01/01/2023 11:30

@pinneddownbytabbies sorry I thought you meant whether a thread was genuine.

Florissant · 01/01/2023 11:34

Tattlers aren't trolling here. If you have problems with what's being posted on Tattler, you need to raise the issue there, not here.

And if (generic) you post something on MN, you no longer control that information. It's not as though it's a new concept.
