What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?

PalatineHill · 15/11/2022 14:07

Hi MNHQ. Please just take it out. Or let me opt out of it? It looks a mess.

If here’s something that I might also like to read, I’ll find it by using the search function.
These suggestions are just encouraging the posting of the same points on multiple similar threads, and that will discourage healthy normal thread death.

It’s really distracting to look at visually, I really liked the uncluttered ‘clean’ MN format compared to other forums.

We’re here complaining but I bet MN won’t take this feature off or let us opt out

daisychain01 · 16/11/2022 04:07

Why is MN not testing this stuff before releasing it into the live environment. The "you may also like this" feature is so poorly thought-through I bet it hasn't been tested. Now you have to scroll down below this detritus even further to post something, It's bonkers having a list of identical threads based on key words. How is that in any way useful to anyone. Why not test the algorithm and fine tune it, then release the right version into Live, not piss everyone off while you're trying to get it right!

I have to look in the mirror to check I haven't turned into a Guinea pig, because I swear that's how this new site makes me feel.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 16/11/2022 07:15

I must admit they did amuse me on this thread But they really need to be gone!

I am so confused. No wonder MN didn't want to lock the old threads or keep the warning on longer when trolls reanimated them. They really want people to do it. It must be because there's not enough new ones.

Hi all

We've removed the feature on fertility and bereavement based on the feedback on this thread. Flowers

Good start now please remove it everywhere else.

Yes, all the posters suggesting locking threads as a simple solution to the increase in zombie threads being resurrected, and wondering why MN were so against doing so. It all makes sense now. MNHQ must have known this new feature was about to be launched and locking zombie threads would mean less threads to recommend.

Yep, totally makes sense that there was never a proper answer to the question of why they don't want to lock old threads because they didn't want to admit they were about to launch a new "feature" that specifically promotes zombies.

Was there really no reconsideration of this after the last week of constant zombie troll action?

It’s awful that some really sensitive threads are being resurrected. Women who have posted in fear at bleeding in pregnancy - if they subsequently lost their pregnancy, how will they feel getting notifications that people are posting on their thread? People posting about losing a child, or trying to escape an abusive relationship… the lost goes on, and it must be so distressing for OPs and anyone with notifications still on old threads.

This! The whole idea seems like it was dreamt up by a very young, inexperienced person.

Cloud9isnowclosed · 16/11/2022 08:09

Annoying feature aside from the sensitives. This morning I read the Rochdale Borough Housing CEO thread and got loads of 'you may like' threads with CEO in the title. Yes, I'd very much like to spend time perusing threads about a variety of chief execs. A more sophisticated algorithm could possibly have linked up with social housing as a theme but no, job titles it is.

KillerSandy · 16/11/2022 08:11

Couldn't see where to post a reply today - thought I had been banned 😂 but yes it's all this.

LookItsMeAgain · 16/11/2022 08:11

The reason MN Central don't want to remove this from their site is because not only are we, the people who post on the Talk area of their boards, the audience, we're also the product.

Without our messages and our posts, Talk would wither up and die, and it wouldn't be the dynamic section of their site that it currently is. It would become yet another read-only area of the site and before you know it, the site would probably, after a while, stop being the go-to place for people.

Because we are both the product and the desired audience/consumer of the product.

If they did care about the audience, the countless suggestions about locking threads over a year old and so on would have been implemented and it wouldn't be going around in circles about this.

Folks I think we have to get used to it being there. Don't click on the links though. If it isn't used (and believe me if they have implemented this change, they can capture stats on it and report on it), it might end up getting removed in time.

Heyhoniddy · 16/11/2022 08:12

Please get rid of it.
mn is unique because it’s clutter free and not exhausting. If I want more info I’ll search, I can’t do all this brain overload stuff.
Thanks

We all know MNHQ have made some questionable and downright ridiculous decisions over the years. But surely someone over the last week or so someone at MNHQ has thought hang on a minute the users are all annoyed at the increase in zombie threads, and we're about to launch a you might like this feature that recommends zombie threads... Maybe we should put that on hold.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 16/11/2022 08:15

The last 5 threads ive clicked on this morning have been months old. They have really broken it this time I think.

The last 5 threads ive clicked on this morning have been months old. They have really broken it this time I think.

And the annoying thing is you won't know this until you click on them, because MNHQ decided to remove the date created / last posted feature that used to show on the active page.

I think the reasoning for this was to make the site less cluttered and easier to read...

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 16/11/2022 08:23

Ah, that’s why old threads are being rehashed. Because they get suggested at the bottom of the current thread. great… not!

SkinnyFatte · 16/11/2022 08:30

@LilyMumsnet @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet Just adding my big fat protest NO this feature. * *

AutumnCrow · 16/11/2022 08:33

Ah good, I've found you all.

Whose stupid fecking idea was this, then? Awful, awful, awful. Please get rid of it asap or give us an opt-out button.

butterfliedtwo · 16/11/2022 08:37

It's giving me Netflix vibes. So weird and inappropriate for this site.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 16/11/2022 08:45

I clicked on the missile landing in Poland thread last night and bloody hell the suggestion if what I might like!
“is putin going to nuke us? “
“has ww3 started? “

and similar.

I happen to have my wits about is, but a more anxious poster would have been terrified.

And, to add to the madness, the thread had a trigger warning. Because the words missile and landing in Poland were unclear.

Agreed, how on earth is this going to encourage good mental health? It's had enough when people feel compelled to look this stuff up, but now you are literally shoving it in front of people.

What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?
ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 16/11/2022 09:08

Sorry, the thread last night was called Russia bombing Poland, nor missile landing in Poland. Same shit.
