What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?

PalatineHill · 15/11/2022 14:07

Hi MNHQ. Please just take it out. Or let me opt out of it? It looks a mess.

If here’s something that I might also like to read, I’ll find it by using the search function.
These suggestions are just encouraging the posting of the same points on multiple similar threads, and that will discourage healthy normal thread death.

It’s really distracting to look at visually, I really liked the uncluttered ‘clean’ MN format compared to other forums.

Omg! So happy I found this thread. I got a new iPhone yesterday and have been seeing this ever since. I honestly thought it was something wrong with my phone.

All the threads I’ve clicked on have all been months old too? What’s the point in encouraging us to read and comment on zombie/old threads. Makes zero sense

itsthefinalcountdown1 · 15/11/2022 18:13

Lily, everything I'm being recommended is REALLY old and out of date. I don't want to see all that stuff again, a year after I saw it last.. 😞

Hi all

We've removed the feature on fertility and bereavement based on the feedback on this thread. Flowers

The dead mothers were in an Employment Issues thread, not bereavement. I just looked at the thread, and it is still picking up totally inappropriate threads regarding elderly parents and end of life from other boards.

Just take this feature off completely for now. Please.

TrashyPanda · 15/11/2022 18:22

Another one requesting an opt-out for this

like others, I noticed it’s offering up old threads.

a bit of an own goal.
the trolls are resurrecting enough zombie threads without this encouragement from MN

TrashyPanda · 15/11/2022 18:28

Here’s the latest suggestions on the dead mothers thread in employment

Somewhat less than useful

That is awful!

SuperCamp · 15/11/2022 18:49

We have just had a week of Zombie threads deliberately posted by Trolls.

Now it seems @MNHQ are trolling themselves 🙄😂

JaneJeffer · 15/11/2022 18:50

If you can't beat them @SuperCamp Grin

Melonymelony · 15/11/2022 18:57

Urgh, take it off MMHQ! The site is getting worse and worse with every update

Based on the feedback of this thread maybe you should remove them all.

Saucery · 15/11/2022 19:29

Agree. Trying to sell me random shit based on the cookies that attach to my account is one thing, but the above examples of the crashing insensitivity are a whole different thing. Come on, MN is better than that, even with the need to generate income Sad

Pixiedust1234 · 15/11/2022 19:31

And this is how echo chambers are born. Haven't you learnt anything from Facebook and Twitter using these kind of algorithms? Facebook is dying because of their "suggestions ". Its really not good business sense to implement it.

Thesearmsofmine · 15/11/2022 19:40

It needs removing, people are just bumping up old out of date threads. If I want something specific I use the search function.

Saucery · 15/11/2022 19:53

Has traffic to the site dropped so much that old threads need to be bumped?

StellaAndCrow · 15/11/2022 21:02

Mumsnet, could something be added to the algorithm so it doesn't offer up threads with very few replies. I tried clicking on two suggested threads - the first had only three posts, the second had only the initial post and no replies!

Maybe there could be a minimum length.

ForgetBarbie · 15/11/2022 21:15

This is what I was thinking.

When I first joined MN (which wasn’t even that long ago!), there were always new threads on the ‘Trending’ section. Now the Trending section is quite slow as I can see the same threads there for two or even three days. Maybe this new feature is a way of generating more traffic or something? Who knows but it isn’t good

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/11/2022 21:21

Oh my god I hate it. Just because I click on "Russia has bombed Poland" does NOT mean I want five more threads about Russia rammed down my throat.

And put the ads back up at the top - stop wasting people's time for the second it takes to work out it's an ad not a thread. It is just annoying.

cakeorwine · 15/11/2022 21:24

It's not Amazon or Netflix.

People should choose what they want to read. Not have suggested similar threads from a long time ago

ValerieDoonican · 15/11/2022 21:28

Stop it now, @mumsnet . It's horrible and will make the site worse by reviving zombie threads. Have you been bought by Elon Musk or something??

ThatshallotBaby · 15/11/2022 21:28

I quite like it

Read a brilliant spooky thread I’d forgotten about

Oh yes and this! How unnecessary is this seriously. We could still see the ads at the top so it’s not like people were constantly ignoring them. I hate the ads being mixed in with the threads, it’s so irritating

zurala · 15/11/2022 21:39

This just started for me today and I hate it! So unnecessary. Please remove it Mumsnet.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/11/2022 21:49

It's not very logical. I started a thread about leggings. I was then offered 'you might like this' But I'd already created the thread, so it was a bit late really.

Tryfull · 15/11/2022 21:52

Please can there be an option to opt out of this. It's awful.

cakeorwine · 15/11/2022 22:00

How does it even decide?
If I start a parking thread, will it suggest cars I might like?

What about a thread on the Royal Family? Will it suggest a bunfight about Meghan or one on William?
