Really slow to respond to troll reporting!

The M&S/Aiden/water/sea monster troll comes back every day. Most of us can spot them really easily. Today they've been back wanging on about bison and animal breeding.

It's so obvious it's the same person, yet their posts have stayed up for hours. If we can spot them, why does it take MNHQ so long to confirm that it's the troll and delete the threads? Do you not all talk to each other about reports that you're getting in, and/or your own suspicions?

OP posts:

Troll hunting isn't allowed either.

Why does it bother you so much. Just ignore.

Because it's harassment under the equality act and is illegal.

Is being a troll a protected characteristic now then?

Reporting trolls IS allowed though.

deliverooyoutoo · 22/10/2022 11:59

No but being disabled is and the disability troll threads I report stay up for days and don't get deleted. We are told to challenge on e thread and educate, which is contrary to the Equality Act

SudocremOnEverything · 22/10/2022 12:02

Wait… there’s an Aiden theme in trolling?

🤯

SudocremOnEverything · 22/10/2022 12:03

I don’t need an explanation, btw. That just encourages this crap.

It’s more that I’m amazed people troll about anything that people could summarise as a pretty ordinary name.

Trolls. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Opinions aren't illegal.

deliverooyoutoo · 22/10/2022 12:06

And I'm entitled to avail of the protection I am entitled to in law. I don't have to ignore it and telling me to ignore the troll threads encourages ableism and perpetuates discrimination and harassment.

I'm astounded I have to even say this. It's wrong. And it should be reported. And MNHQ should do what they're legally obliged to in law.

deliverooyoutoo · 22/10/2022 12:07

They are if they contributing to harassment of a protected class on a website which is bound to obey the Equality Act 2010.

I don’t think that’s how that works…

deliverooyoutoo · 22/10/2022 12:11

You're wrong.

It's also a disability hate crime.

CadburyPurple · 22/10/2022 12:12

I'm a wheelchair user and I've seen very little evidence of hate on here.

EndlessMagpies · 22/10/2022 12:12

I didn't mind the bison one staying up for longer, as it was actually rather funny and we all knew it was a troll anyway.

I'd rather MNHQ concentrated on the nasty / disgusting ones tbh.

Mumsnet is a service business. I am a user. I am entitled to protection from harassment on mumsnet, where that harassment is as a result of my protected class.

WhereIsMyGlasses · 22/10/2022 12:14

I'm finding the responding to threads really inconsistent, and I don't believe being busy makes for inconsistency.

It seems that one person's opinion (s/he who shouts the loudest) can get a whole useful thread taken down, yet I reported vile hate speech comment on quite an already sneery and horrible thread but both thread and comment stood (not the benefit bashing, more sneering at education).

Why is that...it's actually making me distrust mumsnet and their ability to make consistent and neutral decisions?!

MarshaMelrose · 22/10/2022 12:16

Why does it matter, though? It made me laugh. It didn't harm anyone. If you can spot it a mile off, hide the thread then it won't bother you.

Itstarts · 22/10/2022 12:18

@MNHQ can you not block the IP address of persistent trolls?

deliverooyoutoo · 22/10/2022 12:20

Disability bashing threads www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/4660676-disability-bashing-threads I've started a separate thread to discuss disabled bashing trolls.

You can tell it’s half term

Apart from the fact that it isn't half term everywhere can you explain who only has internet access and/or free time during school holidays. Are you suggesting that teachers are making stuff up or that there are multiple school age children whose pastime of choice is signimg up to websites not aimed at them and concocting involbed fantasies?

Has anyone ever actually met at a child who would do this? If you have I d suggest you get them checked for mental health issues

The school holiday thing is just so stupid, does no one think it through?

Having a protected characteristic doesn’t mean you trolling online activities are protected under the equalities act. Or that anyone objecting to bad behaviour is ‘harassing you’ or discriminating against you.

we’ve all - every single one of us - got protected characteristics. That doesn’t mean we get to troll people on MN.

Troll hunting is disruptive to the site and possibly encourages rather than deters trolls. That’s why it’s not allowed. Nothing to do with protected characteristics.

Reporting trolls using the report function is NOT troll hunting.

Not angry at all I just really really don't understand the half term comment and I've never found an explanation of the thinking behind it. I thought you would be able to explain as you must think it's a thing

No obligation to explain of course I will continue to be baffled by what it's meant to mean. Teachers? School kids? Parents who have taken time off work? But why would any of those groups not have internet access at other time?

KangarooKenny · 22/10/2022 15:42

It’s not about internet access, it’s about having time to kill.
Anyway, I’m off and won’t be returning.

The water/Liz Truss/underground creatures/M&S troll(s) who have been mentioned on this thread are not school kids with time on their hands. They just aren’t. Maybe juvenile poo/bum/willy threads are, but not these particular ones.
