The For Sale/ Wanted boards - update from M Towers and post your ideas/thoughts here

As you may know we have in mind a complete overhaul of the For sale/ wanted boards as they seem to be making many folks' lives (ours especially) a misery.

Clearly it makes sense for us to have classified ads - why not re-cycled used stuff? That should in theory be good for buyers and sellers alike (and it's very green too). But equally clearly, at the risk of understatement, it is not functioning well at the moment.

However, complete overhaul is going to have to wait a wee while as Tech's got quite a lot on... (We are hopefully bringing you improved local listings, blogs and more in the next few weeks and months).

In the meantime do give us your ideas for how you'd ultimately like to see For sale/ wanted working. (I know some of you have already posted some sensible (and not so sensible thoughts around and abou but we'd be super grateful if you'd re-post the best of them here so everyone can see, discuss and refine.)

So... what rules would be fair/enforcable and assist in the smooth working of the thing? (nb we are never going to enforce a no huns policy I'm afraid, so do be realistic - MN is for all parents even those with poor grammar and spelling.)

Should we re-house somewhere off Talk? And will it be used/useful if we do? Can we make it work on Talk if not? What would make it easier to use/ more functional?

Should we charge and if so how. What would you pay to use and how would you like to pay it?

Which other boards do this successfully and what are the best ideas/functionality should we pinch?

To ease the pain of waiting for overhaul, next week we will introduce a couple of quick fixes that might hopefully smooth the operation a little, namely we're going to insist that everyone who posts a for sale notice pays a CAT and we'll break down the boards into categories so things are more easily searchable.

In the meantime, please hang on in there and if it all gets too much there's always the hide thread/topic option .

Thanks for your input and your patience.

Peace and love,

Mumsnet Towers

Honeybunch, you are generalising now, I for one have not done any of those things, neither have the majority of posters on here. And there have been badtempered posts from both sides.

So you contend that people who frequent For Sale have not posted on this thread because they are afraid of getting jumped on? That's ridiculous. The only people getting "jumped on" are those who come on with a "you are all bitches" attitude.

Hnybnch · 30/01/2008 22:12

Sorry Laplin I agree, certain people on this thread have been bullying, picking, sniping at (Well whatever some are calling us this week) I apologise for tarring ALL on this thread with the same brush.

Now do you understand my point?

AitchTwoOh · 30/01/2008 22:14

i really haven't seen any of that chav, hun language on this thread for aaages, nor did i use it in the first place as i think it's mean. i think you should move on, honeybunch...

AitchTwoOh · 30/01/2008 22:15

ho-okay. who's been bullying? was the person being bullied the subject of a sustained campaign of abuse with nowhere to turn to for support and no way of answering back? did you report it?

VVVQV · 30/01/2008 22:16

I'd still like to veto some MNers.

Can we have the power MNHQ?

Enough veto's = ban

yummylittlelapin · 30/01/2008 22:16

Of course, Hnybnch, I understood your point fully - I was just saying that you are doing exactly the same thing.

VVVQV · 30/01/2008 22:20

Veto

MissyTheFlouncer · 30/01/2008 22:22

well i won't pounce but it would be nice to see some other of the reg for sale users on here giving their views!!

libEL · 30/01/2008 22:22

I understand but then I think I'm a fence sitter

I can see both sides and agree with valid points (not all the bitching mind ) that people have put across by both sides. I think many people from the For Sale boards have posted their comments on this thread, and most who have seem to be agreeing (sp?!) with the points made about not continually bumping, paying a CAT fee, proper thread titles, etc. I think the intimidation lies for some people with the constant referals of 'huns' and cruel jibes about thieves, traders and so on. If you are a regular poster on For Sales these seem, however misplaced, to be personal jibes and will of course lead to a certain amount of back biting. As has happened the other way around, when insults such as middle class and snob have been thrown back.

Does this makes sense?

yummylittlelapin · 30/01/2008 22:23

Veni Vidi Veto?

QuintessentialShadow · 30/01/2008 22:25

It does make sense Libel, but I dont think they are referred to as this at all. There were some questions initally regards to joblots and the selling of bnwt goods. This was ironed out long ago.

I think most agrees that nobody wants to get rid of legitimate sellers, but people who come here purely for profit. (Like on the thread now deleted where op admits she got them in tesco for a fiver and sells them for a tenner because they are like goldust now).

libEL · 30/01/2008 22:27

Blimey QS, I have just read that back 3 times and cant work out what I was trying to say

It always makes sense in my head but gets a bit lost along the way when writing it

QuintessentialShadow · 30/01/2008 22:29

And yes, I do agree, the name calling is just as much the other way around....

Sorry I am understanding your post in piece.... lol

hunkermunker · 30/01/2008 22:29

I did call certain posters using the For Sale boards yeahbutnobuts - and for that I apologise.

I also apologise for bumping "regulars'" threads. And for pointing out the Wanted and FFP sections. And for liking people on MN. And faking the mmoon landing in 1969. I'm really most sorry about that - it seems to have wasted everybody's time, that one.

AitchTwoOh · 30/01/2008 22:30

you do know that the last time anyone referred to a hun was yesterday before teatime, don't you? i've just checked. and that was someone commenting that whizz couldn't get her post seen beause only shouty asterisky huns were being seen, so it was specifically referring to a subset of sellers to which you don't belong libel and honeybunch. so i really think the sellers should just get over that bit, it's up to you as sentient sellers to encourage your comrades to come on and express their views, rather than just theorising about why they may not be.

ZippiBabes · 30/01/2008 22:30

oh and for a minute i thought hunky was serious

yummylittlelapin · 30/01/2008 22:30

LOL it did make sense Libel

I think the "buy at a fiver, sell at a tenner" is a great idea. I did it with a Kate Moss Topshop dress, doubled my money. On eBay. It would never have occurred to me to try and flog it on here!

ZippiBabes · 30/01/2008 22:31

or hun if you prefer

libEL · 30/01/2008 22:31

I so knew that moon landing was a fake

AitchTwoOh · 30/01/2008 22:32

QS, in a way that was a disgrace but i rather liked Wolfgirl's point on that thread that the seller had totally been upfront about it, she hadn't tried to be anythign else. but of course she wanted to turn a profit, she thinks that MN is a trading site so why shouldn't she?

QuintessentialShadow · 30/01/2008 22:32

But why is it wrong if we call them huns, they call eachother hun all the time???

It is like, the pot cant call the kettle pot, but the kettle can.

controlfreakygobshite · 30/01/2008 22:32

@ qs

hunkermunker · 30/01/2008 22:33

Zippi, I started out serious. But I have terminal pissabout, I'm afraid, meaning I can't take this as seriously as perhaps I ought.

AitchTwoOh · 30/01/2008 22:33

exactly, lapin, i don't disapprove of people selling things for profit, not at all. just on here, it's not what we're here for really. at least i think so.

ZippiBabes · 30/01/2008 22:35

can we get this thread to 1000 tonite

i have just started an assignment that has to be in tomorrow at 9.30 so i will be here for a bit malheureusement
