The For Sale/ Wanted boards - update from M Towers and post your ideas/thoughts here

As you may know we have in mind a complete overhaul of the For sale/ wanted boards as they seem to be making many folks' lives (ours especially) a misery.

Clearly it makes sense for us to have classified ads - why not re-cycled used stuff? That should in theory be good for buyers and sellers alike (and it's very green too). But equally clearly, at the risk of understatement, it is not functioning well at the moment.

However, complete overhaul is going to have to wait a wee while as Tech's got quite a lot on... (We are hopefully bringing you improved local listings, blogs and more in the next few weeks and months).

In the meantime do give us your ideas for how you'd ultimately like to see For sale/ wanted working. (I know some of you have already posted some sensible (and not so sensible thoughts around and abou but we'd be super grateful if you'd re-post the best of them here so everyone can see, discuss and refine.)

So... what rules would be fair/enforcable and assist in the smooth working of the thing? (nb we are never going to enforce a no huns policy I'm afraid, so do be realistic - MN is for all parents even those with poor grammar and spelling.)

Should we re-house somewhere off Talk? And will it be used/useful if we do? Can we make it work on Talk if not? What would make it easier to use/ more functional?

Should we charge and if so how. What would you pay to use and how would you like to pay it?

Which other boards do this successfully and what are the best ideas/functionality should we pinch?

To ease the pain of waiting for overhaul, next week we will introduce a couple of quick fixes that might hopefully smooth the operation a little, namely we're going to insist that everyone who posts a for sale notice pays a CAT and we'll break down the boards into categories so things are more easily searchable.

In the meantime, please hang on in there and if it all gets too much there's always the hide thread/topic option .

Thanks for your input and your patience.

Peace and love,

Mumsnet Towers

I agree, but it's still very patronising, Justine simply asked us to leave out thoughts on this thread.

Whizzz · 30/01/2008 20:51

but I do think this thread highlights the main problems & issues nicely as well as people's views

yummylittlelapin · 30/01/2008 20:51

I think a lot of people have left out thought

OK, OK, I know it's just a type . Thing is, MD4 (may I abbreviate you?), people ARE leaving their thoughts. Lots of people are quite cross!

And I don't think that have ever been a case of a long MN thread that didn't veer off wildly at least once!

yummylittlelapin · 30/01/2008 20:52

I can't believe I made a typo with the word "typo"

Stayce · 30/01/2008 20:55

No actually you can assume that Stayce has never heard of this problem and therefore isnt fucking physic.. Although obvioulsy as you all track my every movement you are therefore entitled to speak on my behalf... And why single me out.. have you seen how many people there are with asterix???

Instead of coming up with solutions you people are turning this into a witch hunt.

Go and find someone else to Burn at the Stake.. You must be bored of searching for things that i have done wrong by now.

ZippiBabes · 30/01/2008 20:57

i leave out thought on mn all the time how jolly of justine to endorse it and give us a special thread

controlfreakygobshite · 30/01/2008 20:57

i would have more sympathy stayce if i didnt think that the same point has been made a number of times (re the asterisks etc) to you on threads you have posted on.

yummylittlelapin · 30/01/2008 21:02

Oh there must be someone else posting under you name then Stayce.

A quick glance at the For Sale boards shows an admirable lack of asterisks - but you have started three threads today alone with * * * in the title.

People ARE suggesting solutions, but then people like you merrily flout them - THAT is why you are being singled out, if indeed you are.

Whizzz · 30/01/2008 21:06

It may have been a lapse of my memory, but I did think the asterisk problem was pointed out on the 'Guidelines' thread in For Sale that someone suggested when all this started. I assumed that the regular sellers would have seen it.

Hnybnch · 30/01/2008 21:11

Quint This is not acceptable.....

Gosh, you would think that the crowd who hang out in sales either

a) are morons or;
b)dont care whether they lose their freebie board
c) are sheep that needs continous herding and a good sheepdog too

If you have a problem with a certain person then please don't assume every for sale board user is the same!!

Thanks

Hnybnch · 30/01/2008 21:13

And about the ... is this one ok?

yummylittlelapin · 30/01/2008 21:17

Good point, Honeybunch, and actually the Bar and the Teashop etc have been asked not to do it as well. I wonder if MNHQ might make it a policy board-wide.

I hesitate to speak for Quintessential, she is eloquent enough but I think she meant that there has been hardly any input on this thread from For Sale users and that the responses which have been forthcoming have often really not helped the cause. Not ALL of them, but quite a number.

QuintessentialShadow · 30/01/2008 21:19

Thanks for translating, Lapin

Sorry if anybody took offence.

MamaG · 30/01/2008 21:22

I've had a great idea

MissyTheFlouncer · 30/01/2008 21:25

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR***

MissyTheFlouncer · 30/01/2008 21:27

oh what happened there! sorry

AitchTwoOh · 30/01/2008 21:45

gosh, look what i've found on this very thread...

By Aitch on Mon 28-Jan-08 21:48:35
the issue of screen readers has been mentioned on threads that Stayce has been involved in or directed to, tbh peachy.

By Peachy on Mon 28-Jan-08 21:44:14
yes I know Hun, was trying to be kind to Stayce tis all.

FWIW Stayce si you don't know, several MN posters use contraptions to read their screens because theya re visually impaired, and they get confused by for example text speak and repeated grammaticals (eg &*^%$&).

Benefit of the doubt given, nest time shall send you a Very Hard Stare

By Peachy on Mon 28-Jan-08 21:38:20
hunofmonsters maybe stayce doesn't know what a screenreader is? (didnt see your post obviously), I imagine many people wouldn't?

By hunofmonsters on Mon 28-Jan-08 21:31:04
Stayce..you are right., you do have a FFP thread...in For Sale with links to a number of picture trails.

I only bring it up because you did.

And just so you know, it was me that reported your thread along with several others on For Sale who were clearly taking the piss - you haven;t been singled out. You bump your posts a LOT you add *'s despite my telling you politely that it interferes with screen readers.

i think it's safe to say that Stayce does know about screenreaders...

ZippiBabes · 30/01/2008 21:47

i didnt know screen readers couldnt read those stars

yummylittlelapin · 30/01/2008 21:49

To redress the balance a teensy bit, I thought this was very sweet

MamaG · 30/01/2008 21:52

oh it was VERY sweet lapin, but i did nod off halfway through

Hnybnch · 30/01/2008 21:53

Hardly anyone from for sale will as they get "pounced" on, all the time!

Some people who have a problem with "For sale are making there own* rules as they go along! (ie happy to put a thread up then it gets bumped as they are a regular and liked)? Wtf?

Again Not acceptableAnd referring to everyone on here as "Huns" "Chavs" "Traders" and the rest!!

I agree there probably IS/ARE traders on here but it doesn't mean we are ALL traders.

And "Chav" how can you call someone that(whom u don't know), just for wanting a specific brand of clothing??

Yet Again Not Acceptable

These things in my opinion are bullying NOT debating!!

ZippiBabes · 30/01/2008 21:54

well they could come on and be nice

i wont pounce on them babe

VVVQV · 30/01/2008 22:00

Oh, do you know, sometimes I wish we had rights to vote. I'd vote for bannings/burnings
