Is anyone else finding Mumsnet almost unusable now?

I’ve been a user of mumsnet since 2012 and, for the first time, I’m considering leaving. Every time I click on threads to read them, halfway down the page the posts disappear, as though they’re still loading… except it’s hit and miss whether they actually do or not. Sometimes I try refreshing the page but that doesn’t work. Sometimes I wait, and sometimes that works.

Even now, while I’m trying to post, it didn’t automatically apply the caps at the start of the sentence.

It is clunky, it’s slow, I can no longer ‘just’ read threads I want to because half of them are missing. I love mumsnet but if I can’t read to the end of threads, what’s the point?

Its fine for me. Not having any problems at all.
Always access on my mobile though, don't know if that makes any difference.

TableSetting · 01/05/2022 18:30

Spending much less time on MN as I can’t bump my ‘Watched’ threads so tend not to bother looking at them now.

greyinganddecaying · 01/05/2022 18:26

The app isn't great. The "I'm on" or "watching" threads often show that they have new posts, when they don't. The threads seem to be in random order & bookmarks don't always work.

Yes I'm finding this v annoying.

isthismylifenow · 01/05/2022 18:49

What is annoying me horribly, if you click on a thread to read it, then arrow back as may want to read the next thread below it... It doesn't take me back to the same place anymore . It takes me to the end of the active page and all I see the is blue bottom of the page. It's driving me nuts. So then I have to refresh active and some of the time the thread I wanted to read next isn't in active anymore.

I have definitely been here less as its just pissing me off. I don't want to download the app, I want to be able to use it in Chrome as it is easily as I used to.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/05/2022 18:50

Me too, every single new thread etc.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 01/05/2022 18:53

It's very slow for me and I'm still getting used to it. Does mean I'm spending much less time here.

Flyinggeese1234 · 01/05/2022 19:07

SpindleInTheWind · 01/05/2022 17:48

Yes it's very sad. I've noticed that the quality of content has dropped off along with the traffic on the main boards that used to be a lot of fun or really interesting & helpful.

I'm here now for the FWR.

Agree. The zombie threads don’t help either.

What is FWR please? I’ve Googled but can’t figure it out!

AlohaMolly · 01/05/2022 19:08

I’m glad it’s not just me! I should have said that I don’t use the app, but exclusively access MN on my phone.

OP posts:
IcedOatLatte · 01/05/2022 19:11

I'm coming on much less too, not being able to go back to the same place on active threads is annoying and on the mobile site it jumps around too much

ExhaustedChameleon · 01/05/2022 19:19

I keep returning in optimism. Nope, still very slow & loads of white space to scroll through 🙄

Is anyone else finding Mumsnet almost unusable now?
CorsicaDreaming · 01/05/2022 19:21

I used the app on an iPhone both before and after.

It was a bit glitchy for a few days round the switchover and I had to log in and out and kill the app a couple of times.

But it is fine now and I can't see much difference

The odd thread will seem to overload it and shut the app down - I think if there are multiple posts with photos or videos in them - but generally it has been fine.

There have also been a lot of deleted threads recently, but I think that is because there have been a lot of trolled threads for some reason recently. Nothing to do with the site upgrade.

mackthepony · 01/05/2022 19:21

It's just annoying.

On the 'active' thread landing page the fonts are different sizes? I think the larger fonts are supposed to indicate if a thread hasn't been posted on... But that's not always the case.

FWR = For Whatever Reason

mackthepony · 01/05/2022 19:23

Also annoying with the huge enormous grey quote boxes within a post. Just too much. I just want text.

It's ye olde name for the feminism threads (Feminism and Women's Rights as was) which is now Feminism: Sex and Gender (10/10) and there's also Feminism: Chat (7/10).

Kite22 · 01/05/2022 19:27

It's so much clunkier now than it was.
The first day one or two were saying we'd probably get used to it / don't like change, but that really hasn't been the case.

The inability to get to where I have read up to when looking at threads I'm on is beyond annoying.

I'm also missing being able to 'refresh' a post when I've had one open a while before being ready to post Sad

Can't understand why they have done this, and then why they aren't listening to MN users.

PeripateticKoala · 01/05/2022 20:13

It's utterly grim. I've been on here since around 2010 I think- something like that, and it's never been worse.
I've had to re-Register and cannot access my messages or anything with my old account/username so very frustrating.

Sarahcoggles · 01/05/2022 20:18

I'm baffled at how it's fine for some people and unusable for others. I assume it must be the gadgets we're using, how old they are etc.
I can't use the website at all as I used to - on my iPad through safari. It crashes instantly every time.
I can just about use the app, which I don't like, and also crashes if I try to scroll through a long thread.
I'm barely looking at MN now, and like the OP I've noticed there seem to be fewer threads than they used to be. I think numbers have definitely dropped.

I have no idea what was done and why, but the fact that so many people are unable to use MN now makes the whole thing a big mistake in my opinion.

TheSnowyOwl · 01/05/2022 20:26

It just keeps crashing and I end up with a blank page. So infuriating.

CuriousCatfish · 01/05/2022 20:31

Having to scroll all the time is giving me RSI. You can barely see more than 2 posts at a time.

FlowerArranger · 01/05/2022 20:33

Notifications of new posts on watched threads now just bring me to the first post in a thread.

😡😡😡

What is this about? It's beyond frustrating!!

PerkingFaintly · 01/05/2022 20:36

YANBU.

Search is now fucked beyond all use.

I used search a lot to get me to conversations, be they from yesterday or 5 years ago, where I can remember that I or a specific poster was on the thread and a few terms that were used.

MN introducing StupidSearch is just unspeakable.

Just for example, yesterday I was trying to find something about Bill Browder. I know it's there, 'cos I fucking posted it. Posted more than once, actually. But no. StupidSearch wants to give me 100s of results about browsers.

Sometimes it refuses point blank to give me any results except thread titles.

MNHQ, let me explain something to you about SEARCH FUNCTIONS.

If I type in a word, then that is the word I am looking for. Not some other word which has a few letters in common. If I have spelled the word wrong, or there are multiple spellings, I am perfectly fucking capable of making a separate searches for the separate variations. I HAVE NO USE FOR 100 FUCKING THREADS ABOUT AN UNRELATED WORD WITH SOME LETTERS IN COMMON.

I've actually resorted to using Google to search MN, and then paging through 40 pages of each thread, to find what I'm after. (I used to use "Show whole thread" and then CMD-F to find the right patch of thread, but you've screwed that up to.)

Even using quote marks doesn't improve StupidSearch.

Seriously. This is fucked up.

And no, I really don't give a shit if you tell me that StupidSearch is designed to help some random non-MN-member who's poking the internet for sleb twaddle, can't spell, and is too dim to try different spellings.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 01/05/2022 20:39

A third of the width is adverts then blank as you scroll down 🤬
no capitals starting a new line 🤬
damn site returning to the start of a thread instead of the bookmark 🤬
I can see myself just not bothering with it, it’s not worth the frustration.

@SpindleInTheWind Thank you!

PortalooSunset · 01/05/2022 21:01

My default browser on my android phone is Chrome. I have no issue with any other website but get a 400 bad request for every single page on Mumsnet. Temp fix by using incognito mode but obvs that means I have to log in every time. Even then it's slow to load threads, there's acres of white space, and if for example I open a thread from Active, in the old days if I pressed the back button I'd get back to the same list, but now it refreshes every time. Oh and I see the same 'trending topics' morning and night, that's surely not accurate? Sometimes they've not been posted on in days!
