Where has Advanced Search gone?

This is a really useful feature - please don't tell me you've taken it away?!

new search is useless

I tried to find the classic post by empusa, about wishing for a unicorn. Couldn't find any way to search by poster for a specific term

So we've improved the general Search function in the upgrade.

How do you search for threads started under a username?

All this faffing around for no benefit. Please can you just bring the old version back.

I've just had reason to search someone, and the new search is really shocking not very helpful.

Why have you changed how it works? Being able to search by username, and then getting a list of all the threads they'd posted on, is much better.

When I search for a word it does the smart searching, so it’s altering my word unless I put it in quotation marks. I know this is something a huge number of database do but it really gets my wick (I do research for a living so it has many, many chances to get on my wick daily 😅)

Screenshot attached. I asked it to search for histories, and it automatically corrected it to history for me. Which might not be what I want.

Agree with a PP that I don’t always want to find a thread, I want to find a post, which the old search did and which this search doesn’t seem to do?

@SueMumsnet pretty sure you used to be able to search titles . Has that gone?

well, I tried searching for me and got a whole load of posts by merrymouse, which is irritating

It used to be good the search thing on the mobile
(Wierdly not on the laptop)
But I just can't do it now it makes me frustrated

@SueMumsnet I've had to resort to google to find particular posts now. Just Usernames and/or thread titles just isn't good enough, I'm afraid. Often I'm searching for information and can't remember the poster's or title of thread, but can remember a key word or phrase. That's mostly what I use search for.

Search is crap now. Hope you can improve it soon.

Completely agree with this - it’s really useful and completely missing.

Please reintroduce some of the old functionality - it really hasn’t improved

Oh no! I was looking for Advanced Search yesterday and just assumed I'd find it eventually. You can't get rid of it HQ! It makes navigating around this enormous site with probably millions of threads by now so much easier.

If I’m looking for posts by a poster it’s only taking me to ones that poster is the OP for, not showing if they have just contributed to the thread. Also if I just use the main search to get over the OP only problem, it’s giving me lots of suggestions that don’t match the search. The old search function was vastly superior.

Yeah.... I have tried it again and it just doesn't work as well.

Search is very quick, but what's the point of being quick when you can't use it to find what you are looking for? Like others have mentioned, I am having to construct sometimes complex searches using google to find what I want.

If you want something to test to show how useless search has become - search for the phrase "From 1911 to 1975". Search does not find the actual thread wanted, but finds threads that contain "1905" "1910" - WHY? (You can tell this is what search is finding because they are highlighted in the results). If you put "From 1911 to 1975" site:mumsnet.com in google it will find the thread I want.

The only thing that works well:

1. The filter for Topics

Seriously major faults:

1. Search only looks for the Search Term in the title or first post. Totally useless.
2. "Posted By" only works for the OP

The old Advanced Search was not to everyone's taste but you could always make it do what you wanted. Please use it as a specification.

Yeah this is awful, I use AS to look up questionable posting history before reporting trolls and this makes that impossible

We Nightwatchers use it to check out reported posts too.

I know you've got lots of glitches to iron out MN, but taking away Advanced Search is not a glitch, it's the removal of a function that was (finally) working quite well.

I've just done a search on one of my old usernames. It will find me any threads I've started, but not the posts I've made on threads I didn't start. This isn't helpful or useful at all.

I agree with other posters that this search function is not improved. It was a feature I used often. I think I can adjust to the other changes, but this may be a deal breaker.
